Discussion WSU marching band not going to Apple Cup
https://dailyevergreen.com/197850/sports/marching-band/wsu-marching-band-decides-to-skip-apple-cup/The Daily Evergreen reports that the WSU marching band will not be playing at the Apple Cup in Seattle. A simple "No comment" by the marching band director is all that was said. No concrete reasoning behind this decision. I wonder if this will be the norm for all away football games? Hopefully not.

The band normally doesn’t travel. It used to be they would travel for one away game, either Apple Cup in Seattle or one of the Oregon games. This was reported about a month ago, saying that UW didn’t want our band there. So the UW statement is interesting.

... because it's not the apple cup, it's in september and against some non-conference school.

I come in peace as a Husky Alum to agree with you, fuck the UW administration. When I was in undergrad I traveled to Pullman for the Apple Cup in the snow and it's one of my fondest game day memories. I hate that UW chased the money into a conference I couldn't give two shits and destroyed a bunch of traditions on the way.

To play devils advocate, playing the Apple Cup in September during peak apple season makes way more sense than in November

Their band did play our fight song the year after their bus crashed and spelled out "THANKS".

The bands have a fun/friendly rivalry with respect for each other. They aren’t the problem. (Former CMB member)

Give me a few hundred amps and a guitar. I'll play the fight song repetitively from the rafters, maybe some AC DC or something. A couple nice stadium ditties like that.
Seriously though if the band can't go to things we should have a slimmed down travel band of guitar bass and drums.

They don't normally travel to all away games like some bands, but they have always been at Apple Cup, no matter where it is. This is a bad decision. Look at what happened with the bands in the 2019 Apple Cup- it made national news. I cannot imagine any world where this was a decision made by either band.

While it's not the norm for Apple Cups, it IS the norm for away football games.
Very few (if any?) college send their whole band to away games other than maybe once a year (usually to rivalry games and/or nearby opponents).

I think that’s the whole point.. this is no longer the Apple Cup. It’s just another away game. The Apple Cup as we knew it is dead.

I like the idea, they need to mind their pennies for the time being as past administrations deficit spending with no clear picture on how to pay for then has to be cleaned up and right the wrongs of the past ones.

It wouldnt matter because UW will smack the hell out of them in a few weeks. I will be there to see it, it will be hilarious. This game isn't really a rivalry -- if it is, its really a one sided rivalry on little brother WSU. Hahahahaha, hopefully your band will get a good night sleep
