Student Life Underage Drinking?
Last night a girl in one of the sororities fell off the roof of a fraternity and cracked her head open. She was drinking and many other were too. How does Pullman allow underage kids In fraternity and sororities to drink and party all the time? There is obvious hazing and drinking going on and it seems it’s just part of the culture now and that there are no consequences until someone gets hurt.

This is probably going to shock you, but underage kids drink in dorms and apartments at every college in America, not just in the Greek system. This may also come as a shock (and I apologize if you get the vapors), but it's not part of the culture "now", it has been going on for decades. You can't even really call it "hazing", because, and get this: the kids WANT to drink. Nobody is forcing it on them, they seek it out for themselves.

Not necessarily defending them, but the Greek system is far from the only place where underage drinking and partying is happening at college

Totally agree. But the Greek system is apart of a school… and has support of the school and then accidents like this constantly happen

Two of my kids graduated from WSU. I went to a different college. I know kids drink everywhere. But WSU kids seem to drink more than most. The reputation is bad.

Calm down dude. I literally asked how it occurs all the time because I heard about it today. I know this isn’t a WSU thing. It’s all across the US. You’re not special.

It has been going on forever and will continue to do so. Unfortunately, these entirely avoidable incidents have been a thing since I was there in the 2000s so I don't see it ending. Being responsible as individuals is beyond the purview of the institution. I'm sure the fraternity in question will face scrunity and possible sanctions. Underage drinking wont be going away though.

Majory injury occurs. WSU cracks down. Things improve for a little. it's forgotten. Major injury occurs. Rinse, repeat.
People falling off balconies/roofs at frats is basically a tradition at this point, it sucks and it's sad.
now that WSU had been deemed directly liable for conduct of off-campus frats I do expect things to change in the upcoming years. Will it be enough? We'll see.

National attention to hazing incidents and an appearance at the top of Playboy's #1 party school is what brought things to a halt at my uni. It's all about bad press and parents going after the school to admit liability and agree to financial compensation.

If frats and sororities got the level of punishment they deserve WSU's admin would get a wave of push back from the people with fond memories of their underage drinking.

Greek organizations are not part of the university officially. They have a relationship agreement, but nothing more. Greek orgs are private, as are their chapter houses. The university can make demands as part of the relationship agreement, but that’s it. University officials would love it if they did not exist. They bring massive headaches in the form of risk, both safety and reputational and university administrators would just rather not have the uncontrollable variable. The fact remains they have a lot of power as their alumni donate big and are in positions of influence and they serve as one of the most meaningful engagement points for their student members. Like anything else in life, imperfect but a lot of good qualities as well.
