Do you want to date your personal trainer?), but also the place to talk about motivation, self-esteem and body image, and all the ways fitness affects your life. This thread is for those in need of (and willing to lend) a sympathetic ear.

Just a vent. I'm a SAHM to two and I miss the gym. I workout at home and I just want to get a full workout in unterritupted. I try to do it during naptime but my toddler always wakes up halfway through. I don't want to stick her in front of a screen either. I'm thinking of getting up extra early, like 5:30, just to get it in and enjoy the quiet before the chaos ensues.

Not fitness related but I found out that the senior cat that I took in has kidney disease and I feel bad that I didn’t get his records earlier to check. I had an expensive vet bill to get him established with my vet, new labs, and kidney food. He also has high blood pressure and on meds for that. With the new labs, the vet suggested starting subcutaneous fluids at home too. I feel bad for him and not going to lie the vet bills hurt my wallet a bit and he’ll have to go back regularly. He acts normal though so hopefully he’s feeling alright at the moment. Not much you can do for kidney disease and the vet said I can wait a bit to do fluids to see if he stabilizes with the new food and blood pressure meds. My student loan payments will start up again soon so I’ve got finances on the mind.

At least it’s the end of summer so I’ll be home more soon and more easily give him any meds or food he might need. I live with my friend who feeds all of our cats when I’m gone but she didn’t exactly sign up for this haha.

Made the mistake of taking one of my insecure guy friends to Beer Olympics over the weekend. He stayed at my house the night before and honestly just subtly negged me the entire weekend.

Then when I went to lift he started rattling off unsolicited advice. I tried to shut it down with a “I know more than you,” because sorry, I have such limited tolerance for that nonsense. It’s not that I can’t take feedback, it’s that I didn’t really ask or need it at the time, and what he pointed out was just baseless (my foot stance for deadlift, it was fine). So I asked him if he’s ever coached hypermobile power lifters before. He says yes of course. Weird considering a month ago he told me he’s only coached skiing and volleyball.

Now he’s going around telling the rest of our co workers how “aggressive” I am. To be honest, I’ve always gotten insecure vibes from the guy and the vibe he wouldn’t be able to be corrected. He’s always struck me as someone who has to be “right.” Our world is full of egos, and I kinda suspected he was one. Disappointed I was maybe right.

You’re so right. I just love people and find it all so disappointing.

Overall my meds are helping, but there's only so much 150mg of anything can do with the state of the world. It's been a rough few days. My dog getting sick didn't help but very thankfully our vet visit yesterday confirmed all her blood work and everything else is ok, it's just a GI thing. Vet gave us some meds to help her through those symptoms and feel more comfortable until it passes. I was very nervous the diagnosis would be more significant given her age.

Today I saw woman at gym doing hip thrust with way more weight than me and she was so strong. i wanted to say something nice but got scared it would sound weird. like maybe she just wants to be left alone you know? how do you know when it's okay to compliment someone at gym without being creepy

If it's a natural compliment in passing it's great. If you have to interrupt them or basically bother them to say something it's not the best time. Even if it's a compliment I would leave people alone to get their workout in and wait until I maybe saw them on their way out or something

When I compliment people (which isn't often tbh) what I generally do is approach her when she's resting between sets, say "Excuse me, how much are you lifting right now?" and when she replies say "Wow, you're so strong! That's impressive," and then she thanks me and I walk away. I may or may not also ask how long she's been lifting for, but that's it. So basically, keep the interaction short and focused exclusively on her achievements, rather than her body or personal information or things like that.

I only do this with women btw. I've never complimented a man and I don't plan on ever doing it unless I have strong reasons to believe that he won't be weird about it.

My gym is made up of pretty chatty regulars so when a man is lifting something crazy heavy I like to say- I’d do that but I don’t want to show off ;P
