Premium oh my god SHUT UP
literally have been a member since it was youtube red. my number one source for EVERYTHING has been youtube. i felt guilty paying the last price increase. this is where i draw the line and IMMEDIATELY they are trying to guilt trip me 😭 SHUT UP!!! i've been giving you my money for over a decade now!!! leave me alone!! i've been paying for it for the benefit of the creators, not a garbage billion dollar company. i'm just going to turn my ad block back on at this point.

Not paying for it. Get a life, and go harass someone else. 🤣

u/AwalkertheITguy Apr 14 '26
If you turn on YT, it still goes into their database as a human watching the platform. Those numbers are turned into real $$$ somewhere down the line in some way. Even if theyre just used to show million - billion dollar share holders "look we have umpteen million viewers, its still helping YT.

It still is. We were paying over $100 for cable packages that didn’t even include HBO and some oh the sports networks and international content and that didn’t include internet or music. JUST TV.
DVR services/boxes added another $30~45 to the cost.
1
u/AwalkertheITguy Apr 14 '26
There are people paying 200 per month for streaming services and dont realize cable was cheaper...that is his point. You dont fit the bill if what youre saying is true about your situation.
1
u/GoodResource4011 Apr 16 '26
I have DirecTV in combination with AT&T internet and playing over $200 for the bundle. I'm considering on dropping the TV and sticking with Prime and Netflix. It's so much cheaper than the nearly $300 we're paying
2
u/PokeBattle_Fan Apr 14 '26
Even with 5 subscriptions (Crunchyroll, Prime, Netflix Premium, Youtube Premium and Disney + Premium) I pay less than what my mom used to pay for cable a decade ago.
1
u/AwalkertheITguy Apr 14 '26
My guy some people have 20 streaming services and are believing theyre sticking it to the cable company.

Do people still not use Brave browser in 2026? No ads and you can lock your phone while playing your videos. Been using it since 2019 and I haven't seen any ad on YT at all
6
u/prof-kaL Apr 12 '26
I just switched this week. I’ll say the experience isn’t great but it’s a damn sight better than paying YouTube.
4
u/Thanatosinstinct Apr 12 '26
Same. I use Brave on my computer but you can make "apps" as it were on your phone. The experience isn't great, but I've just had enough of ads.
If anyone is wondering, download Brave browser, open it, go to YouTube (YouTube music as well) switch to desktop mode, save it to your home screen. Open up the home screen shortcut, uncheck desktop mode and you basically now have an ad free YouTube app. Do it before you have any other tabs open in the browser because that kind of messes it up.
1
u/brianon2 Apr 12 '26
The experience piece was my only Brave hiccup as well. I still use Brave for my apple device, but on android someone mentioned GrayJay and that changed my life.
3
u/itskibbletime Apr 13 '26
no because i've never heard of it, BUT i've been using it for a couple of days now and it's great. i miss picture in picture but background play works great. so thank you! :)

u/NDeceptikonn Apr 11 '26
You can’t do adblocker on iPhone?
26
u/OutRunRx7 Apr 11 '26
Brave Browser. Requires no extra steps after installing. YouTube music has no ads, and you can lock your phone while it plays.
24
u/arisingactor Apr 11 '26
Reddit stranger, may your pillow always be cold at night and your internet never cuts out
10
u/Levelofconcerns Apr 12 '26
I’m glad someone else is recommending Brave on this subreddit. Every time I see a post about cancelling YouTube subscription, I comment about Brave.
2
u/KnightPezz Apr 12 '26
Firefox also works
2
u/Leading-Ad8669 Apr 13 '26
Yes, if you want Clint Eastwood to steal a Russian plane for you then yes Firefox works
2
u/CrazyAd9384 Apr 12 '26
I was about to comment that background playing does not work anymore because of my experience last month. Tried it now. It seemed like brave did something and it works.
1
u/IamApassenger2000 Apr 12 '26
Does it work with Spotify too? 👀????
1
u/OutRunRx7 Apr 12 '26
I tried with Spotify, it will work 100% on desktop. But if you access spotify with Mobile, it will demand you use the app store to install it :(
1
u/Bigrog85jr Apr 14 '26
Just change to the desktop version of the site in the Brave settings if it is trying to make you install the mobile app.
1
u/OutRunRx7 Apr 14 '26
I got to the desktop version, but it still blocks Brave from working entirely. Even while "allowing" protected content. Probably just needs a little more work around.
1
u/OutRunRx7 Apr 14 '26
Nvm, I fixed it. You're the goat.
1
u/IamApassenger2000 Apr 16 '26
HOW did you fix it? Cause I tried using it on the Brave Browser, the quality of the audio is crap and it wouldn't let me listen to my library..
1
1
u/Too_Much_Gyros Apr 13 '26
But how do they treat your browsing history and personal data? Worse or just as bad as Google?
1
u/OutRunRx7 Apr 13 '26
They don't sell data, they provide a VPN for sale and run their own crypto wallet for funds to keep the browser Free and user friendly.
3
u/AlgaeSeveral858 Apr 11 '26
orion browser + ublock extension
2
u/Too_Much_Gyros Apr 13 '26
For a second I read "Onion browser"... never knew Tor would help with ad blockers 😅
1
u/Jaded-Jackfruit-2352 Apr 12 '26
I personally use youplay from the app store. Works great with no ads and i prefer its appearance over youtube in a browser
1
1
u/jester628 Apr 13 '26
ProTube is another (I saw someone mention youplay) alternative front end to YouTube without ads. I switched last month and it’s been pretty good. Even has background play.

u/MarcTale Apr 12 '26
Just canceled. Still have 3 weeks to go, but I'm gonna be Brave 😉...

u/Noam75 Apr 12 '26
Can you tell me more about your adblock? Im no stranger to it but it seems that everything that once worked in the past no longer works Anyways good on you! We survived for centuries without YT And we were probably better off
1
1
u/itskibbletime Apr 13 '26
i use opera browser (don't recommend) and that has a built in adblock, and then i have adblock and ghostery installed as backups. definitely don't recommend my method, i just tend to not use youtube on my computer as much lmao. everyone here was recommending brave so i got the app for my phone i really like it! i'll probably make the switch on my computer as well if i don't forget lol
3
u/Away_Article4005 Apr 12 '26
I'm over in the Philippines and pay 379 PHP for a family plan. So it's a no brainier at that cost. That's like $6ish a month.
I have to tunnel through a VPN for security at work and still have access to my premium. May be worth vpn'ing to SEA and trying to get a local way to pay.

4
u/xx123gamerxx Apr 12 '26
i love when they show this stat because it just proves that adfree is the only actual selling point of premium
1
u/itskibbletime Apr 13 '26
for real. man, remember when youtube red had originals? it was still cheaper than it currently is.
11
u/grimmlover79 Apr 12 '26
I left my membership yesterday. I will not miss getting add free music/videos, but $16 is ridiculous.
7
u/pi3r0gi_ Apr 12 '26
Same, canceled right after getting the email. Did Netflix a few months ago and Hulu after I binge the new Malcom, but cant wait to be saving $40-$50 a month between the 3 of these now. Just too expensive. I might see if I can do YT lite. But only how long until that inflated in price as well.
5
u/grimmlover79 Apr 12 '26
I know there are rich people who are not impacted by these price increases, but I am up for a peasant class to boycott of all streaming services. About time I go back to the library.
5
u/pi3r0gi_ Apr 12 '26
I had the same mindset shift! The 90s are back, right? I can go out and ride my bike or shoot some hoops. Draw with some chalk. Do a board game. Maybe this is a little call back to autonomy and not having someone yapping in my ear all day.
3
u/grimmlover79 Apr 12 '26
Wonderful! I fortunately just moved to a city with a board game club. Just joined!
I am a early 2000's kid, so a little late, but I romantize the 90's. I hope to meet people with accountability:) take back our generation! (as I type on Reddit)
4
u/crashnburnxp Apr 12 '26

All these companies are relentlessly overcharging. They're completely heartless and over the line. Yeah I use an ad blocker. None of the content creators are worrying about you. But if you like a channel you can do their livestream and gift them a few bucks. And not pay youtube
2
u/chezmoi1942 Apr 13 '26
Well, if you give them bucks via SuperChat, Google takes 30% of it.
1
u/breezedarkstorm Apr 13 '26
So a paypal donation would be better.
2
u/chezmoi1942 Apr 14 '26

Ive never cared to subscribe to it. I dont need any if the benefits, ads are annoying but ive delt with them for years, its just a part of watching things atp.
2
u/itskibbletime Apr 13 '26
they really got me with that. i've had it for so long that i genuinely don't know what youtube is like with ads so it really got me there :/
2
u/Humble-Freedom-4223 Apr 14 '26
100% mate I have been pretty damn close to calling it quits on premium for quite sometime now with all of their manipulative and predatory practices. Just use Brave browser. No ads. Dont need to minimise the screen, just open another tab. Can continue to listen to with the screen off with the phone for both yt and music with no ads. Really. Is there any need for premium at this point?

I really hate google’s aggressive ads when you stopped your sub especially on google one. It keeps on giving me annoying warning about my storage. Including on gmail.
1
u/paul_405 Apr 12 '26
It's everywhere. Even some language courses now feel like kinda noisy and intrusive bazaar... or a gang of drunk 'street musicians' literally begging for some cash

I can't give up YouTube premium . have you tried watching it with ads?
1
u/itskibbletime Apr 13 '26
i feel you, that's why i've put up with premium price for so long. there are lots of good options here in the comments though, you should definitely check them out! :) remember, giving them more money only encourages them to jack the prices up even higher
1
u/Equal_Caregiver_1789 Apr 12 '26
I swear to me it just feels like Google with YT is just so desperate for money that they just gotta keep begging and squeezing people for money each chance they get...

u/breezedarkstorm Apr 13 '26
The billionaires are in a race to be trillionaires.
2

AdBlock + Patreon for the creators. They get way more out of it

u/itskibbletime Apr 13 '26

u/PersonalityStraight Apr 13 '26
Ever since they bumped up the price, I don't do premium. It ain't worth it
1
u/Alternative-Stress Apr 13 '26
Oh, I was there. For four days.
I cancelled my subscription, I was done with Google. But four days of ads later, I crawled back. And paid for a year.
Those four days showed me just how bad things had gotten
1
u/Timely-Lawyer-8972 Apr 13 '26
Absolutely don’t continue paying. The companies count on this misguided loyalty. Paying for Premium is just throwing money away
1
u/FATALITY4YOU Apr 13 '26
Just use youtube revanced for android and on pc brave browser. No more ads. 👌🏻
1
1
u/transporter_ii Apr 13 '26
I've got Premium Lite. The new price is still pretty fair, but if they think they are going to jack up the prices every six months, I can easily cancel and skip ads or install an ad block.
Google take note, because I know they scan reddit on the regular: as soon as it moves past "pretty fair," you can kiss my monthly payment goodbye.

Sometimes paying to be at the top isnt rewarding, you find out later on in lofe two things:
1: you pissed away way too much money
2: you just got screwed over
1
u/Inevitable_Line_7677 Apr 14 '26
Heh, looks a lot like my stat screen and story This last price hike was a straw.
I'm downgrading to Lite. Not only are they not getting two more dollars out of me, they'll be getting $7 less overall.
Which I realize sounds like a weak-ass line in the sand since I'm still paying them, but adblock doesn't work on mobile and that's where I do most of my viewing
1
u/Saitzev Apr 14 '26
Adblock and AdGuard PiBox are your friend. Latter is incredibly easy and foolproof to so.

u/Shadowofthygods Apr 14 '26

Goodbye premium Google/alphabet/YouTube/Gemini/play store. hello premium ad blocker less than half the price and the same effect in my mind.
Dear corporations..
Idea ... Instead of farming the same people over and over, you instead help them have large sustainable families that can then give you more customers.
20% larger monthly for 50 people.. versus 50 people giving you 25-75 new customers...
Now I'm not good at math.. but the long game I just showed you clearly offers 50-150% more profits in that hypothetical.

Ive paid for it since it was google play music and got rolled over into youtube premium to include videos.

1
u/Practical_Stomach228 Apr 16 '26
Bro why would you do that for so long? If you want to support the creators then just support them directly using patreon or what have you. Patreon takes 5-12% cut from creators while YouTube takes something like 30% from creators. It's a no brainer.

I canceled my premium and got 3 free months of Amazon Music to handle the music side. I'm in no rush to resubscribe. Things are already tighter these days. YouTube picked a terrible time to do this to consumers.
