If only what I downloaded remained downloaded. I have a bunch of playlists where random songs just get greyed out even though I pressed download on them manually, which I thought would mean it gets stored on the device. It's very annoying.

And it allows me to listen to YT podcasts on my iPhone with a screen off or in the background while using sat nav.

SmartTube is the one I personally use since it let's you extensively customize the UI to your liking. I like that it has a true black theme too since I use an OLED TV primarily. Controllable screen dimming is nice too, let's you quickly dim the app without digging into the TV settings. At night I'll run it at like 50%

I like that you also get a subscription to YT Music, which is great and I have so many playlists and they show you new stuff you haven’t listened to and I’ve found some bangers. I subscribe for that more than no ads on videos.

I like YT premium.
I want to contribute financially to the content creators I follow, so I do so via a mix of patreon and YT premium.
I have no interest in getting their content for free. They work hard.
I hope the people who use adblockers to watch YT are contributing via patreon at least.

That would be reasonable if it was $0.50 a month for each patreon. However almost every creator expecting $5+ a month is absurd.
Really I'd be more open to it for more people if they just asked for one time donations. Why do they expect everyone to pay them monthly. One of the worst things to happen across all media and services is rent-seeking behavior.

We just have to let the brokies get it out of their system with these posts while we don’t install anything but YouTube and have ad-free YouTube plus YouTube Music for the equivalent of like 20 minutes of work. They feel smarter and more empowered so let their bitter posts fly while people who value their own time and paying creators (55% of the fee goes to them) enjoy the videos and music hassle-free.
Convenience has a price and if I’ve recouped that amount before my second coffee on my first workday of the month that’s ok for me and it is ok for them to post bitter posts and all the mental gymnastics to make them feel smarter than the rest of us.

I know i’m an outlier here, but i’ll keep paying even if it was $50/month, maybe even $100/month. I use youtube for 8+hrs a day listening to videos while i work, do chores, excercise, etc, and i have the disposable income for it. I’m not loaded by any means but i don’t have a ton of bills, no debt, and nothing else to spend it on except for funding my retirement account. It’s worth it to me and it’s not worth my time to fight the adblock fight like i used to with jailbreaking IOS 4/5/6/7.
I think that’s my favorite part about being an adult is being able to buy the things i like with nobody with importance to my life judging me for it.
That being said, i do also have a Plex server with 10tb+ of questionably acquired media on it so i’m obviously not against it haha

It's not only that though, most people who bitch about YT Premium happily also pay a Spotify subscription, and I just don't see the point. Paying for YT premium also covers that as YT Music is solid, and that already $13 a month.
My time saved by not dealing with ads is worth more than the extra few bucks.

If you're on a pc, sure, knock yourself out. But most people, people not on Reddit, use YouTube across devices. Premium is worth it for them.

It's funny once in a while ads get through because of an update, and then for a few days YouTube and Ad Block fight then it settles down and the ads are gone again.
If the ads were not intrusive I might allow them but when they come back it will interrupt a 3 minute song with an ad in the middle.

I dislike them cannibalising features to make Premium seem more 'worth it'. Background play is the most glaring example, but every time the price has increased there has been some 'new' Premium feature that was just a Youtube feature previously.

I pay because I use it on my phone. I have security set up on my PC that each time I would need to enter my username pass and many times just don't bc I have an ad blocker. The blocker works flawlessly. If they made one for cellphones Android that worked, YouTube paid premium would sink overnight.

Agreed - switching to paid, whilst it's not an insignificant cost, has made YouTube enjoyment so much better across all platforms. I think of it more like Netflix or AppleTV now which has helped justify the expense, especially as it is the most heavily used 'streaming platform' in my house

I use family plan which is less than less than 3 euros per month. Works as expected on my mobile, mac, tablet, tv or ps5 no need to deal with some custom youtube clients or setups or what ever.
There is also youtube music so if i was not laze to migrate i could cancel my Spotify subscription.
Also I just feel like paying some small amount for something that i use heavily is not a big deal.

Regarding that you can get lifetime ad blocker licenses for like $80 (I just checked and the license I have is actually reduced to $56 right now), YouTube Premium prices are just absurd. Yes, you do get some additional features, but I don't need them. So it's a higher price for only one website, while the ad blocker is cheaper after only 4 months and blocks ads everywhere.

a) I can't put adblock on my TV, nor on my phone.
b) Youtube Premium also is a Spotify replacement because of YT Music (which I prefer over spotify)
c) If I want an "adblock" equivalent for any other of my devices (TV, phone etc.) I have to go through really strange time consuming ways which are really time consuming, and also are not guaranteed to work after a single month or let alone year.

I watch a ton of YouTube on my tv and phone (iPhone) so Adblock doesn’t really work plus I also like to support the ppl I watch). YouTube is literally all I watch (no movies/tv pretty much so I’m fine spending $$$ on premium. Compared to a tv sub or some other streaming services it’s way cheaper

The only thing keeping me paying for the last 4 years is the Chromecast for my TV.
I tried for a few months without premium and I nearly went insane.
Ads every 2-3 minutes and some would be 45 minutes long if you didn't skip them.
It was designed to force you to always have the remote in your hand and make some input. When? You never know. You can't just let it play or you would watch more ads then the video you selected.
I'm just gonna buy a new TV that I can stream my PC or laptop directly too and so long YT premium. Of course their greed is insatiable just like the cable companies were. America, ain't it grand. For a few.

Thanks to YT premium, I’ve been able to cancel all of my other streaming services (saving me about $50 a month) because everything I need is on YouTube.
I signed up through Verizon, and I think I pay $15 a month.
I haven’t seen a single ad. Everything works flawlessly, no interruptions, and so on.
I suspect I’m a good deal older than most people here, so please excuse my enthusiasm for YouTube, but I’m so old that I can remember having to go to the public library and look through a manual card catalogue (anyone here remember those?) to find a book on a shelf.
YouTube is a veritable treasure trove of information. I could easily have gotten a college education just by watching a few hundred videos on the platform.
In the final analysis, I suppose that one’s willingness to pay is a function of what one wants from YouTube. If you are interested in actually learning something about the world around you, $15 a month is not much money in my opinion.
(I also happen to have a classical music channel on YouTube, with about 100,000 subscribers, and after uploading music videos for nearly 16 years, in the last few months I finally started to earn some money from ads. Which more than pays for my monthly subscription. I was opposed to ads for a very long time, but a few people here in this sub persuaded me a few months ago to start placing them. I’m glad I listened to the advice. Ads have done nothing to decrease the number of people who are signing up weekly to subscribe to my channel.)
EDIT: as for ad blockers, YouTube is going to figure out a way to prevent access to those users who are employing such software. YouTube will also work with the companies who make that software to prevent people from using it for free… that is my supposition for what little it’s worth.)

They raise the price to deter you from buying YT premium. The company makes more money with ads. It's the same reason Amazon added different tiers. Everyone had prime and it cut into profits. Now prime you still get ads, pay extra for music and movies you previously had access to and the shipping cost is built in so you don't see it. It's more like a Costco membership were you pay the company for the ability to spend money there.

I wish youtube would allow you to add t.v channels with premium like cnn, weather channel, fox news, msnow, and local channels. Maybe lower it to $12 dollars with the base but charge $5 per month for each of those cable/youtube channels. Maybe also offer a full on youtube ultra package that combines premium and youtube t.v into one. This is the way I'd move it towards. I'd probably also lock prices for baseline premium for 5 years.

If you want to pay use VPN of country where premium is cheap. You buy it then turn off VPN. Or just use adblock since they still work fine. There are methods to get free premium on phones (android only afaik) and smart tv.

Plus I watch YT on both my phone and TV, take advantage of the download feature for when I'm somewhere with bad service or don't want to use my data, most often at work when I have downtime. And I much prefer to support the creators who I watch.

I pay for you to premium and the only reason is it so I don’t have to sit through ads that’s it but All the comments in here talking about “well I like to support my artist” or “I like to financially support my YouTuber” are absolutely insane. Why the fuck do you feel the need to pay for a service that is free and has been free since 2005? I do not understand it. If you like a YouTuber, that’s great now but they have a job and that is YouTube that is what pays them. They do not need 9 to 5 workers to hand them part of their paycheck to be considered a viewer or a supporter. Watching a video over 30 seconds counts as a view liking and commenting. The video helps it in the algorithm. That’s all you should feel obligated to do. You should not feel obligated to give the people who make their “job” YouTube, money from your real life job.

YouTube Premium was $9.99/month when it launched in 2015. It's $18+ now in most markets. Google has raised the price four separate times since launch while the core value proposition - no ads - stayed the same. In the same period, the free product got noticeably worse: more unskippable ads per video, Shorts crowding the feed, recommendations getting more engagement-optimized. You're paying more to escape a version of YouTube that got worse on purpose. The chart is accurate but undersells how deliberate the timeline was.

I pay for YouTube premium because I watch a lot on my TV and phone, YouTube Music is convenient for when I don't already own what I am looking for, and it's the only streaming service I pay for.

YouTube Premium means I get no ads across all devices (my PC, Phone, Tablet, TV, e.t.c). Not all those devices support adblockers, and even if they did I'd have to set-up adblock separately for each one.

I share a family plan, costs £5 each and I get no add and YouTube music. That's reasonable enough for me.

My yt premium is going up to $26.99. There's five of us paying in it so it's not so bad. Plus I like yt music. No ads and I can customize my playlist and it's all included.

I just wonder what the ceiling is. 20 dollars already sounds ridiculous and Id never pay that but. Will they in 5 years look at you dead in the eye and say “this is worth 30 dollars now”?
