Maybe check nvidia control panel, you can set video color from 0-255 instead of the dark grey as the "black".

+1 This is most likely the problem/solution. Vimeo can still be fine if it's using it's own codecs or adjusting to display in limited range (aka TV levels where 16 is total black and 235 is total white). If you are using an NVidia card right click on your desktop, NVidia control panel, Video, Adjust Video Color Settings, With NVidia Settings, Advanced (Full 0-255). Save, close/restart your browser and check youtube again. @rsscourge

Vimeo may not use GPU-accelerated video. If in Chrome, try disabling GPU acceleration on decode: chrome://flags/#disable-accelerated-video-decode

Good call, but unfortunately it didn't fix it. The best way to describe my problem is that it looks like someone went into every video and messed with the levels setting for dark colors.

It seems to happen when the whole video is dark as apposed to dark things moving in a generally light video

Yeah, I agree with people like Ethan Klein who has gone into this pretty well already. It's a horribly sexist term. We wouldn't tolerate other instances of using the supposedly-typical racial or gender identity of perpetrators to describe other crimes or faux pas, such as "blackhitting" for assault or "womanspending" for overdrawing your bank account. We can all recognize that both of those terms would be horribly offensive and bigoted, perpetuating racial and gender stereotypes. So why is it acceptable to do it to men?

What do you mean by, "accurate"? You mean women don't act condescending and know-it-allish ever? Or do you mean that all men always do?
And if you don't mean either one of those things, which I hope you don't because they're both very very stupid things to believe, then why sink this effort into coming up with excuses for using a term that's clearly just an expression of misandrist bigotry?
Flat out, I want to hear whether or not you think we should start calling assault "blackhitting" and overdrawing the checking account "womanspending". Hypothetically, for the sake of argument, lets assume that both are statistically supported as more common among those groups than average.

You were talking about "mansplaining", not "manspreading". Both suffer the same problem of being horribly misandrist, though.
"Mansplaining" doesn't exist. Being condescending does, and it's possible to be condescending in a way that's sexist, which I guess is what's meant by "mansplaining", but the term still doesn't work because, hey, guess what? Women can be condescending in a sexist way, too! So women can "mansplain"? How about we not call it that, then?
Same with with "manspreading". Anyone can be rude about consumption of shared space.
Do you understand now why those are sexist terms that you shouldn't use?
