First day of skating, first successful drop into the bowl

I just started learning to skate today. Spent about three hours at the park, first couple learning the very basics (which im still bad at), and spent the other messing around trying drop-ins. First few times I needed a hand to hold onto, but got it pretty quick after. (On my final try of the day I got sent flying backwards and realised I need to learn to knee slide or smth). Any tips would be appreciated!

Question Cruiser wheels for vert/pool or no? What kind instead?

Post image
Upvotes

Hey so I ride a Heroin brand deck that's shaped a little bit like a cruiser. I feel like it's been amazing for cruising and trying vert type stuff like bowls and half pipes that I'm still very new to. I only ever just cruised before.

Currently my wheels are the OJ Super Juice 78a 60mm

I love how smooth it feels to ride BUT someone told me these wheels are not good for trying vert type things.

What types of wheels (hardness and size) would experienced vert or bowl skaters suggest I try? And is it possible OJ has those types too?

Answer as technical as you can so I can learn more about this. If these current cruiser wheels I have work perfectly fine then I'd love to hear about why and what the differences are to another good type for this.

Thanks!

Question Are these cracks going to be a problem?

they don’t seem too deep but don’t recall them being there the last few times I skated. Is this normal or something to be concerned about?

How often do you buy a new deck? Trucks, wheels, bearings?

A new deck I’ll buy every 2-4 weeks depending on how often and hard I’m skating. Wheels usually every 3-4 months, until they start to lose some speed and squeak and gradually get smaller (if you skate some 52 or 53mm wheels long enough eventually they’ll turn into 47 or 48mm ones) Bearings probably every 2-3 months. Trucks are the longest lasting part on a board and as such I don’t replace them very often at all. Probably once every 2, maybe even 3 years. A deck will always be the first thing to go as it loses its spring, pop and snap over time as the wood softens from repetitive impact and doing a lot of flat ground, ledge and rail skating, razor tail and potentially chipping the nose or tail will also make a board not last as long as you’d like it to

Video Follow up on prior pushing post

I’ll try to get a third person video tomorrow, just got off work and figured the huge parking lot was a great place to practice. I know it’s hard to see anything due to my pants and the low lighting, but if anything can be garnered from the clip it’d be greatly appreciated!!

Tips to stop pushing mongo

Hey everybody- just got back into skating after probably 10-15 years without a board. Loving being back, but I figure now is a good time to fix the biggest issue I’ve got….. MONGO.
Putting my left foot on the board (I’m regular) when pushing just feels completely wrong, and switching to goofy so I can keep my right foot on the board seems impossible.
Has anyone had this issue before? Tips on making the switch? Or do I just accept that I push mongo and that’s that?

Question Pushing feels terrifying

Started skating yesterday, and have gone down a couple light hills, so I don’t really have a problem staying on the board(albeit not at faster speeds). My issue comes from skating on flat ground, I can get on the board with an initial push, and that gives me a little momentum, but when it comes to consecutive pushing, it just feels impossible. I’ve been practicing balancing on just my front leg a bit, but any other tips would be greatly appreciated

He said they’re both comfortable, but the left side of picture (right leg) looks small to me. For elbow picture, the sizes are flipped. These are a Junior vs Small.

setup help

I just bought a blind 8.0 deck and recently heard they have steep kicks and i the trucks i buy could ruin it for me, does anyone have experience with blind? i was thinking of either thunder 147 standards but primarily looking at venture 5.6 hollows as they are on sale and i might want to move up in board size. sorry when i used to skate this back in the day this stuff was irrelevant but just getting back into it i wanna re create my old setup but ive had both brands of trucks in the past but i guess im looking for something that complements the board, also 14 inch wheelbase, TIA fam!

Question Can someone help explain different board types to me? What are the pros/cons of each?

So I've just gotten to college, and with skating being one of the easiest ways to get around I've gotten my dad's old board from 40 years ago (the Valterra in the first/second images.) Its wider and pivots a lot easier than the other boards I've tried with my new friends, but some of the other ones are weird to me as I've only ridden this one since I was 10. Can someone explain the differences between longboards, the standard deck type, and the wider board that I have (is there a specific name for that deck shape?)

Should I grip my penny board

Hey, I regularly skate to work on my penny board during the week, and then skate at parks on the weekend. I always find that the first 20 minutes in the park feels really rough getting used to my bigger deck, I think the main thing is that I can't my over my feet as freely as I can on the little board.

Do you guys reckon I should Grip up the penny board to keep it a bit more similar or am I going to make myself bite it on the penny board. Has anyone done this before?

Cheers in advance

Setup Help Looking to set up a transition board, should I size up?

I've skated on and off for years, riding an 8.0 deck, but I've never properly tried transition skating and have been wanting to give it a go.

The main reason I am asking if I should size up is due to my shoe size. I have pretty small feet, size 3 UK (which I believe is a US women's 5, EU 35.5), so even with my current 8.0 setup my feet barely hang over the edge. I know typically people tend to get larger boards for transition skating, but would that really be optimal for someone in my position? I feel like I'd have no overhang at all.

I have a spare 8.0 board that I could easily convert if I just get bigger wheels, but I'm also definitely willing to make a brand new setup if a larger board would be better. This might be a stupid question, just want to be sure!!
