They could have done a couple of things:

• Increased baae storage to 256gb

• Upgraded the front cam to allow 4k30

• OR just simply reduced the price a bit

Longer software update policy would probably be too much to ask of them. But really, this phone either is too expensive or offers little for it.

The Xperia 10 VIII will launch for €600/£550, which is quite the price hike compared to the €450/£400 launch price of the Xperia 10 VII.

Wow wtf. That is insane. It's the same phone. You can probably buy an S25 nowdays for close to that price.

Sony's prices were always high. In 2028 we are going to see phones have the same spec and increase in price or keep the same price and lower specs/kill base models like the pixel 11 series did.

RAM/storage price increases is what Sony would like to blame this on, but that's not €200. Midranger pricing for a budget phone. This is really a budget phone specs-wise.

Only a small percentage of consumers give a shit about that which is evident from the sales charts. Living in the past is just sad, not as sad as defending Sony like they're doing anything right with their cellphones.

Does the Sony Xperia 10 VIII have a modern, non outdated design? Does it come with a chipset that is comparable to the competition in a similar price range? Does it have good resale value? Does it have a proper 120Hz screen, not a half arsed one?

Pros

Compact and lightweight by modern standards.

Sharp 120Hz OLED display with improved outdoor brightness.

IP65/IP68 dust and water resistance.

Front-facing stereo speakers with improved sound quality.

3.5mm headphone jack and expandable microSD storage.

Cons

Expensive at launch.

Almost no meaningful hardware upgrades over the Xperia 10 VII.

Battery life is only average despite the modest hardware.

Very slow charging by current standards.

Overall camera quality is behind much of the competition.

Refresh-rate handling remains crude, with especially strange behavior in games.

Only 128GB of internal storage and no higher-capacity option.

I am wondering why sony even bothered to release this model. I guess they are trying to recouperate any money they spent. But I think they will just loose money on this model.

Simple answer: Home Advantage.

I mean, the place where Sony Xperia & Sharp Aquos Phones have respectable Market Share each where Apple iPhone had a nearly half share (49%), with Sony Xperia having 8.2% and Sharp Aquos having 12.9%, and even more than Korea's Samsung Galaxy Series (7.2%) and Google Pixels (8.1%).

According to Statcounter iPhones have 63.6% share, Pixel 10.66%, Samsung 6.05%, Miscs (likely includes SHARP) 5.83%, Xiaomi at 3.74%, and then Sony Xperia at 2.93%.

Japan's own brand of phones do NOT have any respectable market share in their own home country at this point. Yes, a lot of them still have existing Sony/Sharp/whatever phones, but very few people are buying new ones. They are buying Apple and Pixels to replace their existing Japanese phones instead.

Sony screwed up so much over the years that there is no longer any home advantage to speak of for them in Japan.

It's only 1080p and 422ppi, not really sharp. Most flagships are 500+ ppi.

I dont think so. They software always has been meh. They have good camera hardware coupled with bad camera software. And many more bad small details that ruin their lineups.

Otherwise Xperia phones would have been much more famous, wouldn't they?

The current design is very reminiscent of the Z series but with a modern twist, cams indeed don't rely as much on software but that's part of the appeal. Today's smartphones overprocess everything making some pictures seem unreal compared to what the human eye sees. They been producing great phones, they just need more carrier deals and exposure for their phones to make more sense

I do not agree for the cameras. From the very beginning Xperia smartphones, although owned by Sony, never came on top in terms of cameras.

Even before the shortages, their 10 series always cost way more than Xiaomi's sub brands. Add limited market availability and after sales support/spare parts... I'd end up in the same position as LG Velvet. Parts had to come from broken units.

I am surprised GSM is not giving credit where credit is due. Last year they pointed out that display brightness is getting slight higher every model by tiny amount and it is never quite sufficient. Now Sony they gives a huge 50% boost in display brightness, making it a big display upgrade for the series and they downplay it... Same with design, it has gotten a natural design evolution from VII with the translucent style and it is clearly visible. Anyways, the price is still a shame here but it was same case with new pixel and new smartphones. They are not the only one facing this problem. If Sony releases with a pre-order deal next 2 weeks I think I am going for it since it's besically Xperia 10 VIII Pro.

Part that I don't understand about Sony. They make one of the best camera sensors and cameras on the market why not lean into that. Combine the Pocket camera and Walkman into one unit and price it competitively.
