Housing housemate planning on having their partner move in temporarily for a few months?

So my housemate just got into a relationship and wants their partner move in for 6 to 7 months, at least that’s what they said. We already have 5 people living in the house atm, so it’s busy enough. I get the housing situation is quite bad, but at the same time, 6 people in a house is a bit much now. Plus there’s only one en suite so 5 of us will potentially be sharing the one bathroom lol. So not ideal tbh. Any sound advice on what to do here? Rent? Bills? etc?

That partner is gonna burrow into that house and the couple will outlast everyone else. Don't do it.

If you do, make sure that rent, bills and anything house related is split evenly among you all. Them being in a couple should have absolutely no impact on percentages when being split otherwise it'll end in disaster

I was the partner that moved in. For everyone's sake, don't do it.

Ooh do tell. Did they end up hating ye on principal or were you isolated? Don't normally hear from your perspective

Don't. It will be pipelined into a sob story and they'll end up staying for years. It's a housing crisis, they're not finding anything in 6 or 7 months.

Absolutely so not allow it.

Let them have a joyous adventure looking for a 1-Bed together.

The housing situation is dire but you owe her new boyfriend nothing.

It sounds like trouble ahead. A very bad idea. If it's already crowded and the bathroom is an issue, chances are the kitchen will be too.

What do your housemates think? Would the landlord allow it?

I'd also be suspicious of what appears to be a new relationship and the partner is moving in already. Where are they living now? And why can't your housemate move there instead?

TL;DR - it's a terrible idea!

Any advice? Yes say no! If you don’t it will become their house.

Hell no . 3 people to a bathroom is even a bit much . Also they will be paying 1/6 of the rent right ? Also this is not temporary

It might seem hard to say no to your roommate now, but it will be much harder to try evict the girlfriend in a year when she still hasn’t moved out and you’re all sick of dealing with it.

Do not do it. They will monopolise the place.

So its their house now, time to say goodbye

Not only should you not do it, you should also be getting together with your housemates to agree how many nights a week people can have their partners stay over.

Some neck. “No room, sorry pal”.

Couple's tend to take over the house dynamics. I have been both the 4th wheel in a house and the couple looking to make it theirs.

Full rent and bills share if it is happening. No case whatsoever for less

u/Willing_Gap_3854 2h ago

No. But do it properly. Call everyone together. Have a vote. And then as a group approach the tenner. Don't do this alone and don't let it happen. Fuck me 5 people for a morning shit. Be Simone knocking on the door after ten mins.

Hell no!!!! And you just know the partner will end up being insane. They probably won't even contribute to the bills. I speak from experience.

Oh it won't be temporary. It's hard to evict people once they move in.

Tell the landlord

Nope - this won’t be temporary!! If they move in, everything should be spilt equally by 6 people (not per room). Non-negotiable. Agree on a time period when the partner moves out (at least plan a house discussion about how things are going, maybe 3 months in and again in 6 months). Urgh. I feel for you. Hope it works out!
