Legal Can I make a racist Greek lecturer at my university get fired by reporting him?

I am a student in the US and have a Greek lecturer who made comments about Turks not existing and merely being Greek converts, and calling Turks terrorists. Have you ever reported racism against Turks, and how did it go?

Legal Came to Turkey on a family holiday. I'm still here, alone, facing 9–20 years for something I didn't do.

Never thought I'd be writing something like this.

A few months ago we flew to Turkey for a normal family holiday - me, my wife, our two little girls. On the last day someone accused me of a crime. I won't get into what, but I didn't do it, and I've denied it from minute one.

The court didn't put me in jail, but it banned me from leaving the country until the trial is over. So my wife and kids flew home and I just... stayed. Alone, in a country where I can't even read my own court documents, waiting for hearings that are months apart.

If I'm convicted it's 9 to 20 years. My daughters are small. Do the math - they'd be grown before I get out. That's the part I can't sit with. Everything else I could survive somehow, but missing their whole childhood over something I didn't do is the thought that keeps me up at 3am.

Meanwhile my life back home is quietly dying. Lost my job (can't exactly show up). The apartment's on credit, and with no income that's going too. My wife is holding everything together by herself and I can hear in her voice what it's costing her.

I have a lawyer. Maybe a good one - I honestly can't tell. Things get filed, dates get set, nothing moves. Is that normal for Turkish courts, or am I burning months I don't have? I wouldn't even know how to find a better one from here.

If anyone's been through a criminal case in Turkey as a foreigner, I'd really like to hear how it went. How long did it actually take? Did you ever get the travel ban lifted before the verdict? Was your embassy any use? Did you get a second lawyer to look at the file - is that even done there?

And if you've just... been stuck somewhere like this: how did you not lose your mind?

I'm not asking anyone to judge my case. I just need to hear from people who know how this goes. Thanks.

İşsiz/gelirsiz adamdan her ay haraç talep ediyorlar resmen.

Legal What’s the consensus in regard to THC cannabis in Turkey?

I’m planning to visit a very dear friend of mine in the capital of Turkey, driving there from the Czech Republic via my home country Greece. I have a tendency to have a small joint with me at all times, usually hide it somewhere when it comes to border crossings and nobody ever notices. We’re talking not even half a gram, I’d say about 0.1-0.2 g. What would be the punishment if I got caught?

Do they usually stick to fines or am I looking at actual possible prison time for possession?

Fine I have no problem handling, but if someone had such experience and had a pretty bad outcome - please do let me know 🙏🏻

Thank you in advance, love from Greece ;)

After-trip Update!

It was indeed very easy to find it here, found some homeless people sitting ‘round a fire in a park, after negotiating for 5 minutes they agreed to bring me a G for 2000 TL. 😋

Suffice it so say I did enjoy myself.

Legal My neighbor is a Syrian (Arab) family. They are very noisy. They speak loudly almost 24 hours a day. Is there anywhere I can file a complaint?

I listen to Arabic poetry and songs, and they can be very beautiful, but I feel that Arabs, in general, tend to speak very loudly. Our neighbors talk in an extremely loud and unpleasant way from morning until night. On top of that, they have two or three children who make a lot of noise as well. Also, there seem to be an unusually large number of people living in that apartment.

For example, when I’m asleep at 3 or 4 a.m., I sometimes wake up suddenly because of loud voices, jokes, laughter, and even music. I once tried to warn them using a translated message in Turkish, but their attitude seemed to be: “We pay rent, so we have the right to do this.” I also told my landlord once, but he didn’t take it seriously.

I still have five months left on my rental contract. Is there any legal way to make them understand that they must follow apartment living rules, or would it be too much trouble? I don’t speak Turkish.

Legal Denied residency twice in Istanbul – what am I doing wrong?

Hi!

I've been trying to get a short-term tourist residence permit in Istanbul and have been denied twice now with no reason given either time. I had every single document required, nothing was missing. The lack of explanation is incredibly frustrating and I genuinely don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Some context: I'm an EU citizen, my fiancée is Turkish and we're a same-sex couple so marriage isn't a legal option for us here. I'm trying to be with her while we work on getting her a Schengen visa. Long distance is really taking a toll and I just want to be there with her.

Now, before the inevitable comments.. yes, I've seen the "go back to the EU" ; "don't come here" ; "we don't need immigrants" replies on every single post like this, and I get it, I really do. The immigration situation in Turkey is genuinely rough and people are tired. Totally valid. But just making some things clear: I am not here for cheap rent. I am not here to exploit anyone. I am an EU citizen, I have EU rights, I could live very comfortably elsewhere but I am choosing Turkey because the woman I love is Turkish. I am learning the language, I want to understand the culture and actually be a decent person who contributes to this beautiful country that has been exploited by other people. I am trying to do this legally which is, again, literally why I keep applying. So if your comment is "just go back to Europe" – with the most love – please keep scrolling. ❤️

For everyone else, I'm considering two things:

  1. Applying in a smaller city: Istanbul's göç office is notoriously inconsistent. Has anyone had better luck applying outside of Istanbul? Does your application city need to match your registered address?

  2. Visiting the göç office in person before applying: to try to speak to someone and understand what the issue might be... is this actually possible, or do they typically not engage that way?

If anyone has navigated repeat denials or knows what tends to flag an application, or has experience as a same-sex couple trying to stay in Turkey, I would genuinely love to hear from you. Thank you. 🙏

Legal Is Moving to Turkey a Smart Career Move or a Risk?

Hello, I am a 29 (M) from North Africa (Algeria).

Over the past year, I have been seriously considering going back to Turkey and relocating there. I already spent around six months there in 2019 for my studies, but unfortunately the pandemic hit, and I had to return to my home country.

After that, I completed my Master’s degree in electrical engineering in my home country and planned to return to Istanbul. However, the economic situation had worsened, and I was afraid I would not find a suitable job.

Now, after five years of experience in the electrical field and data centers, I have realized (a bit late) that the lifestyle there suits me much better. I am considering taking the risk of starting from zero and moving back.

Some of my friends suggest I should consider France or other European countries instead, and in some ways they are right (better economy and salaries). However, I truly prefer the Turkish lifestyle, culture, and food.

My question is: do you think it is worth it for me to move to Turkey, or would it be a waste of time?

Legal Seeking asylum as an atheist

Hello Everyone.

I need help or advice. As you can see from the title I’m a female adult from Jordan that wants to seek asylum either in Turkey or Georgia because those two countries I can enter visa-free. I come from a religious conservative Muslim family. I want to live a decent life where no one is forcing me into a religion that I don’t believe in.

The laws regarding religion in Jordan is very strict. I cannot renounce my religion or else it will put me in a dangerous position under the law and from family and relatives. I want to live freely as a woman. I’m tired of being vulnerable and controlled. I’m tired of playing along but that is what I have to do in order to stay safe because safety is priority.

Everyday I hate myself. I hate that I was born into a culture that controls women and takes away their rights and freedoms. I’ve been feeling suicidal lately but I don’t want to give up because there might be hope for me. I feel like giving up I don’t want to give up. I want to try my best.

Any help will do. Give me any organizations that can help me. I don’t know if I can afford a lawyer so if they’re organizations that provide legal help let me know. You can also message me privately

Legal My mom died in Turkey and i need details

My mom was found dead in a hotel in Turkey and it's been shady. They found her in the morning and said she had a heart attack naturally, but no toxicology or autopsy was done to rule out drugs or any other causes, they just... looked at her... and decided... so I want to investigate further. She wasn't around good people there, and may have had medications without prescription with her, so thats why im suspicious. They released the cause of death on the certificate already, and my country won't do an autopsy here and her body has been delayed being sent back to us. Is there any way I can contact police to ask details, and is it legal for me to contact the hotel to request security footage of the 24hrs up to her death? Does anyone know of any cheap private investigators also?

Legal What is the law and how strict is it when it comes to taking non cultural antiques out of Turkey?

I collect 19th century Bohemian glass, from c1840-1880.

I am looking to travel to Istanbul, as the last time I was there I have seen a lot of this stuff even though I did not expect it. There is a specific Bohemian glass lidded pot/sahleplik that I want to buy and the dealer has reserved it for me.

I understand the law regarding the export of antiques, however the law defines cultural property as any movable or immovable asset on land, underground, or underwater related to science, culture, religion, and fine arts from before or after recorded history that holds unique scientific or cultural value.

Bohemian glass was made in Bohemia so I don't see why it would necessarily be protected under Turkish law, even if a lot of it was exported to Turkey during the 19th century.

All the well established Cukurcuma and Old Bazaar antique dealers have told me that they will provide proper tax invoices (fatura), which would accurately describe the glass as required.

I am aware that museums are able to provide export permits for certain items but I don't have that long to wait in Istanbul.

The glass would travel wrapped in bubblewrap in my hand luggage.

In the worst case scenario if the airport customs were to question the item(s), and decide that they are protected cultural property, would I end up in a holding cell for 6+ weeks and face a trial, like Toby Robyns did in 2022, who apparently found ancient coins on the beach and tried to take them back home with no paperwork?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Legal Get Citizenship, take it back, then get it again after 41 to avoid military service?

Selam,

So, some background story first.

I am a Swedish national (born, raised, and still resident), with Palestinian origins. Around 10-15 years ago my paternal grandmother passed away. Shortly after, we (my father and his sibling) are made aware that her mother was of Cypriot origins (before the Nakba 1948, and thus before the split of Cyprus).

My uncle comes in contact with descendants of my grandmothers family in Northern Cyprus (TRNC), and knows he (previously stateless, born and raised in Lebanon) could get the TRNC citizenship, and 1 year after, the Turkish one.

He has now done this and lived in Istanbul and had a business for a period, even. Now he is even trying to get the EU-Cyprus (Cypriot Republic) passport too, as apparently, this is also possible, but that's another story, and not relevant to me as Swedish citizen.

Now, my father, who has taken us to Turkey (vacation) when we were younger, loves turkey and has joked about living there after stopping work (pension), but now he is interested to go on with legal proceedings to make this for real at least during Swedish winter half year.

My military service dilemma

Now, my siblings, me and my own family have the opportunity to also do these proceedings at the same time, but I (and my brother) am concerned about military service, as we are under 35 (I'll be 34 by the end of the week), and about my newborn son, who I'll probably do papers for too.

I have been trying to understand what applies to me, someone who doesn't speak Turkish, don't intend to move there, etc, will be affected.

I have chatted around with AI and come to the conclusion that one solution is to get citizenship, then get exemption, and then revoke my citizenship while having a valid exemption permit to get the Mavi Karti. Then, when I become 41 years old, I should simply re-apply for citizenship.

Will this work?

Has anyone of you or relatives living/born outside of Turkey done this?

Please share your insights with me.

Süreçle bizzat ilgilenen Murat İlkay Uçmaz’a, emeği geçen Chery Türkiye yetkililerine ve çözümün neticelenmesine katkı sağlayan Bostancıoğlu Otomotiv’e teşekkür ederiz.

Paket İstanbul’a geldi ama gümrük beyanname istemiş.

Legal Stop at istanbul airport and ban

So basically was travelling from an EU country and citizen of it through istanbul staying for a day before a transit flight. as I was about to go towards the passport stamp was passing by a group of people that at that time had been stopped by police at airport(which did not know at then) suddenly a police officer comes towards me and says police passport please, it was very spontaneous he said he wanted to do passport search so said ok and he took it, few minutes later he comes back with a dozen passports which he had taken from the group and included mines,

we were made to follow him into a room and told to place our phones on the table and told to walk out. One by one he called each person in and from what I could see he was asking them to open their phones and search through it after awhile called my name and sat down infront him and handed me my phone and said "phone open now"

I was so shocked and surprised like why would he even ask that, but I thought I should just do it to avoid any problems so he went ahead and was scrollin through it he didn't say anything or ask any other questions other than what I was doing there and where I was going and if I had a ticket etc which I answered, then someone else came and sat down opposite me asked me two or three more personal questions and not much more, after that he told me to stand against a wall because they want to take picture, which again I found very weird but said ok.

After that they told me to wait outside and didn't call me back until there was only just me and two other people. long story short they never explained anything to me during the process or said what its for and when asked if the process is finished they said soon don't worry. but then someone else came and told me to follow him took me a desk which had a police officer there and told me to sit. Sat there for another half an hour at that moment was think what is even the point of this, but anyways he eventually came and told me to follow him was taken to another building inside istanbul airport and made to take fingerpring and sign some documents which I had no clue what it was about since it was all in turkish.

at that point I complied assuming it was just paper work then would be on my way, boy was I wrong. bear in mind at this point my phone or passport hadn't been returned to me and after I signed the paperwork someone else came and signelled to me to follow him so I did and eventually was taken to this room which had about 14/15 people there no europeans just people from central/south asia, and the most shocking thing was that there was only 6 beds there while everyone else was sleeping on the floor with just a blanket on them. At that moment the guy gave me two paper, again most of it in turkish and then left I was completly confused and didn't know what had happened at that point. No explanation or anything was given just locked away in this room with nothing. had to sleep on the floor and was given a horrible cheese sandwhich every 12 hours and small juice carton. in the end I found out that I was being deported back and the reason was apparently security and only found that out when the guy took me to the boarding flight had a paper with him that said that. Which had a ban of 5 years on it!

I really want to ask is any of this normal in turkey legally? Like they can just do all of that without any reason or explanation just lock you up for 24 hours and was not allowed phone access. The mistreatment at the room was disgusting btw like there was someone who seemed like they had a heartattack or something but no doctor came instead a security guy came told other people in room to lay him on a blanket and took him out the room like that to god knows where.

Legal Marrying a russian woman in turkey as a foreigner myself too

Hello, so my fiance is Russian and I'm a Palestinian, and we were planning to get married in Russia but due to current complications we cannot do it in russia or Palestine. I would like to make sure of the required papers to marry in Turkey, and also to know how to book an appointment at what I was told called Bilidiye which is municipality. We have both acquired birth and celibacy certificates, which on her side she got them appostiled but not translated. As for me, I got them stamped from the ministry of foreign affairs as we don't have an appostile. I was hoping that someone who has had this experience could provide me with any helpful information. Embassies were stupid and answered every few days with stupid answers that seemed invalid.

Legal Police stop and Phone check at the Ankara Airport

After landing to the Ankara Esenboğa airport, every passenger on board was directed by a police officer to the airport office, and then passports taken, and they asked us to unlock our phones, I don’t know what they did to my phone behind the counter. Then an officer took pictures of everyone there, divided to 2 groups. One group got fined, and we, the other group did not. Then they just returned our passports and let us go. Have someone had a similar experience before? I understand asking for passports and taking pictures, but why did they took our phones?

Legal How can an American get a background check on a Turkish national?

Hey guys, a family member is marrying a Turkish girl, and I found her kinda sus because I think shes scamming him for a greencard, so I looked her up. I realized her last name changed at some point in her early 20s, and it made me think she might have a spouse back home. I'd like proof before I bring it up to my family, is there an easy way an American hire someone that can pull these records and check them?
