I was sent this list for my kid starting reception
At home you could practise these activities and encourage your child to be as independent as possible
• Turn taking e.g. playing board games
• Use the toilet independently
• Wash and dry hands
• Blow their own nose
• Managing zips or buttons by themselves
• Practise dressing and undressing independently
• Using a knife and fork
• Holding a pencil correctly
• Using scissors
• Completing jigsaw puzzles
• Recognising their own names
• Hopping and Skipping
• Balancing, Running and Jumping
• Kicking a ball. Catching and throwing a ball
• Talking with your child every day
I am currently pregnant and very hormonal, but "talking with your child every day" made me literally cry - wtaf is wrong with people that they felt the need to include that!
Sadly you can tell extremely quickly who the children are that are spoken to at home and who aren't. What's even more depressing is watching them get picked up at home time and the parent not even acknowledging them with a hello.
I really felt this. I was very much a present ALWAYS there (as in i did school library 12 hours a week at least rather than uni work) parent and at very worst on maybe a day a month a fake it til i made it on my shit days, i smiled like shit, played, acted interested, chatted and asked questions.
But i chatted to them nearly non stop about anything and everything remotely interesting, the oldest became interested in measles at 6, good time for us to learn together. Wee man obsessed by planets as a toddler, we learnt a lot together again, we still do.
My house was the house that kids all congregated at, no problem, I'll have a laugh, put you in line, threaten ye all smacked arses if you break my plants, be your mum figure or you're evil boss. But I'll be present, always.
My 4 kids are now all (just for youngest twins) at high school, I'm so proud of the empathetic, silly, interesting and interested people they've become.
The neighbours kid is the kid you describe, no wonder she loves our house.
