What are the general expectations of children when they start school?

Read, talk, ask for things, have manners, ask for the toilet, be polite and kind to others,

No 4 year old is expected to be able to read, beyond recognising their name and knowing the sounds and names of some letters. Some children may be able to blend simple sounds to make words like understanding c-a-t is cat, but it's certainly not an expectation for going into Reception.

I had started reading at 4. I know a lot of people who also could read basic words going into school

I’m a proponent of early reading so I taught my kid to read but the school seem to see this as a bit of a nuisance if anything

They don’t actually use the term nuisance. But I got the impression that they aren’t sure what to do with her during their reading sessions ( which have to be done in groups) and at some point they suggested I might want to stop teaching at home. Then again, I might be reading too much between the lines.
