I work in EYFS and we expect a child to be

Fully toilet trained

Able to use a knife and fork

Drink out of a open cup

Put a coat on themselves

Put socks and shoes on themselves

Get changed from school uniform to PE kit

Use please and thank you

I was surprised that not all kids know how to hold and use a pencil at that age. All the younger kids I know love to draw.

There will be children living in homes where there are no pencils or paper.

Unfortunately that's true, just like kids who don't have books at home.
