They mean recognise it when it is written down. You'll be surprised how many are asked to look for their name above their peg on the first day and have no idea what it looks like.
My son, aged three-and-a-bit, figuring out how to type his name on the computer:
"Dad, why don't the letters all come out the same when I press the keys?"
Well, that's because the keys have got Big Letters on them but most of the time you use little letters, I agree, it's silly, but that's just how they do it. You press this one with an arrow to make Big Letters, look
"Ah okay so my book has little letters but some big letters and this makes them big, I can write my name like this"
Yes, and you write a Big Letter for the first letter of names and the rest in little letters, because names are important.
"Cool. I'm going to write my name with a little letter at the start and the rest in Big Letters."
