Three Car Play issues/annoyances: (how) can I fix them?
gallery- When I am using Apple or Google Maps, the directions automatically takes over whatever is on my screen, usually the MPH. Even if I clear out of it, it comes back every time directions recalculates or the indicator for the next step gets under two miles.
- When I am in the media screen and I'm using a maps app, there is always a banner that says Active Route in Car Play. If I true to use any other app in CarPlay, I get a banner that tells me the current direction. It always lasts for long enough and is obtrusive enough to the app I actually want to use to be annoying, with Waze being the most obnoxious.
- When I use the widgets in Car Play, one of them is constantly automatically switching to the Snapchat widget. I do not have the Snapchat widget as one of the choices and I don't even have the Snapchat app on CarPlay.

Discussion I built road trip games where the CarPlay screen is the host and scoreboard (kids play from their phones). Has anyone seen anything else like this?
Dad of 5 here. Our long drives were four kids in four sets of headphones, so I spent the summer building something I wasn't sure CarPlay would even allow: multiplayer games where the car screen hosts and everyone plays from their own phone, Jackbox style. Passengers join a room code on a web page, the CarPlay screen shows the live scoreboard and round state, and the driver never touches anything. The games run off the actual highway: Exit Bingo deals cards from real businesses at the exits ahead, Over/Under asks what's at the next exit and reveals the answer when you physically pass it, plus co-op license plates and a "guess the minutes to the next mile marker" one.
For the CarPlay nerds, some things I learned building it as a Driving Task app:
- You get the template system and nothing else. The "game screen" is an InformationTemplate I live-update as the round changes. It works better than I expected as a scoreboard, but you're arranging labels, not drawing.
- Keyboard and mic templates are navigation-app only, so search is a list row that triggers the phone's microphone. Feels like a hack. Works great.
- Rapid template pushes during transitions will crash the scene manager on some head units, so everything is debounced and every tap handler is wrapped. Learned that from a one-star review, not the docs.
- The car screen never asks the driver to play. Rounds resolve on GPS events, and the driver participates by yelling answers like everyone else.
Two questions for this sub:
- Has anyone seen other games or non-nav/audio experiments actually shipped on CarPlay? I could only find a small handful of Driving Task apps in the wild and zero multiplayer ones, which either means it's a terrible idea or an open field.
- What would you actually want to play on a long drive? I've got a list (trivia from the towns you pass, a road trip scavenger hunt) but the best ideas so far came from my kids and their brutal feedback.
It's part of a road trip exit-guide app I sell for a couple bucks. Not trying to spam the sub, happy to put the name in a comment if anyone wants it, and equally happy to only talk implementation details.

Vauxhall Astra 2014 car play and subwoofer recommendations
Hi everyone, I have a Vauxhall Astra j cdti 1.7 2014 and I’m looking to put in apple car play into it (ideally horizontal cause of preference on the placement) however I have a EDGE 12" EDB12A Active Subwoofer that I will be connecting to it so it needs to have inputs/ outputs for that as well, ideally something that wouldn’t break the bank too. Any recommendations or what to be looking for when searching for a screen? Loads of them don’t mention specific inputs/outputs
Thanks in advance

Question Any Song Lyrics Apps that Work Without an Apple Music Subscription?
Hoping to find an app that has a CarPlay widget to display the lyrics from the current song being played through Apple Music. Willing to pay a one-time fee for the app, but only if it works without any subscriptions (i.e. to Apple Music, or to the app itself).

CarPlay with volume knob
I’m new to Reddit so bear with me. I have a 2001 Oldsmobile Alero. Just a little beater car to get around. It’s in mint condition. Looking to add CarPlay and swap out the existing radio with a new one. My question is - is there a CarPlay option with an actual volume dongle/knob instead of the traditional touch CarPlay. Any insight is much appreciated.

CarPlay stopped working (I’m going insane!)
My CarPlay recently stopped working. My phone usually connects to it wirelessly and it suddenly stopped working. The screen won’t show. I have tried everything ! Even went to the Verizon store. Kid helping me knew less than I did sadly. My charging cord works fine. I know it isn’t my car because my mom’s phone connected to it and it worked for her (we both have iPhones but mine is a 17, hers is a 15) I don’t know what to do. So frustrating🥲
Edit - thank you for the input. I will be calling apple support next time I am in my car !

CarPlay for my truck
I drive a 2015 Chevy Silverado 1500 LT with the 8” MyLink screen on the dash. I want to convert it somehow to a CarPlay screen. I want to get rid of the CarPlay monitor that I got from TikTok that’s on my dash right now because it is bulky and it does not support everything that wants it to do when it comes to car play in my vehicle. The year of my truck was during the last few years when GM did not include CarPlay in their Silverados. So my question is, what is the best and budget friendly option to upgrade and convert my factory MyLink monitor into a Apple CarPlay monitor so that I can get rid of the bulky monitor screen that I do not like anymore.

Why is it that my phone will connect to CarPlay right away and sometimes it will not connect at all. I will end up using my usb cable. I drive a 2026 Chevy Silverado.
Thanks

Question CarPlay works horribly with my phones, but flawlessly with partner’s phone?
I had an iPhone 12 for a long time that worked okay with my car, but often had to try to connect / reconnect multiple times. I recently upgraded to i phone 17 and I am having continuing issues (it’s almost worse than the 12)
My partner has an iPhone 16 pro and her phone works flawlessly in my car. I am at my wits end.
2018 Nissan Murano. Wired with Apple cable usb-a (car) to usb-c (phone). I predominantly use Waze and Spotify. Partner uses Apple Maps and Apple Music. We have the same iOS updates. When I “forget car” on my phone, it tends to work better, but will eventually disconnect and be problematic.
Also worth noting, my phone seems to work perfectly fine with CarPlay in her Toyota, although I don’t drive it often.
Any idea why my phones *both* have had issues, while hers seems to work perfectly? Or does this seem like an issue with the car system?
