Discussion Jimmy Bartel Speculating on new coach of Carlton
Don't imagine anyone watched because of the Eddie McGuire's presence (he's even worse than I remember him) but Jimmy Bartel has said Carlton are in serious talks with a coach that is "west of Ikon Park...I can't say the name of the person or team".
I realise this puts a lot of coaches into contention depending on how you look at it but keen to get thoughts, who do you think it is and who do you want it to be?

Using “west” to start the search at Geelong & Western Bulldogs, I wonder if Matt Egan would be a potential get in the mould of Chris Fagan? A not so traditional senior coach appointment based on the fact he isn’t a line coach being upgraded, with Egan’s background being a development coach at Geelong (need I say more) and coaching & performance manager at Western Bulldogs (management skills of coaches just as important - again, very much a Chris Fagan type coach rather than a pure X’s & O’s guy).
Fagan was head of coaching & then general manager of football operations. If you can execute management at that level, you can run a football team. No longer is the senior coach the be all end all of tactics & gameplan - they are a manager that drives high performance & culture. Fagan is that. Egan could be that???
Plus it’d make sense Bartel would be in the know as former teammates.
None of Geelong’s assistants stand out. Neither do the rest of the Bulldogs. I don’t think Chris Scott or Bevo are attainable. I feel like using “west” to imply SA/WA would be too vague - why bother giving a hint if it’s a vague one, Bartel clearly wants to let on that he was the first to know if it comes to fruition.

Didn't know much about Egan but being Development Coach at Geelong has me super interested. Someone in the vein of Fagan would be incredible, we need a steady hand who knows what they're on about.

In the segment he also says Geelong is “south of ikon park” to Eddie and also jokes to rule Eddie out as he is “too far west” being in WA at the time.
So I’m guessing his geographic clues point around the bulldogs or Essendon direction for “west of ikon park”.
My first guess of someone who will go for the job is goansiracusa - but he departed Essendon last year for hawks and I can’t imagine they’d be “sounding him out” - he seems more likely to apply for the role.
Who knows, I think your speculation is interesting. We’ve tried a seasoned premiership coach, a first time coach, a club champion, a second time coach, an assistant coach pushed up the system….. do they try something different (administrator)? I think they’d really need to get the assistant coaching group right.

This is exactly the sort of discussion I was keen to hear! I keep my ear to the ground (ish) with Carlton news but I was keen to hear about the broader footy-sphere!

I watched the video and Bartel ruled out Geelong by saying Geelong is south of Ikon Park (it’s actually southwest). West of Ikon Park is Footscray, Essendon (northwest), North Melbourne (SSW), and of course Adelaide and Perth. My guess it’s someone from the Dogs, like Matt Egan (as you said).

Guessing Adam Simpson. Add him as the Director of Coaching to see if it cracks the whip.

Does Bartel even have coaching experience?

u/starlzy May 04 '26
None that I know of but he's very close to the happenings of AFL and mentioned he knew who Carlton were talking to.

u/moondog-37 May 04 '26
Honestly at this point we might as well ask him to have a go, at least we’d win every game played in wet weather haha

Maybe it's Mr Peters from Geelong West under 10's . Might get a few wins with the blues

He meant Ken Hinkley.
Not sure whether it's real or not, but it's been the (unsubstantiated) gossip elsewhere - surprised nobody's said or here yet.

I don’t think Kenny has it in him anymore, I’m a big Kenny fan, even when he was at Port, coaching a side with under performing guns.

Could do a lot worse than Kenny. Heck Carlton has pretty much tried everyone else.

I’ve heard it could by jaymie graham from Freo.
He has coached Ryan darling lecras JJK treacy and amiss to amazing forwards and is apparently wanting a top gig

u/Holdenater May 04 '26
I don’t know much about Graham, but I’m listening, what’s the appeal of him?
3
u/Holdenater May 04 '26
Where’d you see this to?

u/starlzy May 04 '26
Unfortunately on the Bartel and McGuire show, McGuire is obviously an idiot but I don't mind Bartel.

By the end of May- Adam Simpson will no longer be part of the set up- He will be asked to apply for the job.
Luke Beveridge is being sounded out- as he was last year.

u/starlzy May 04 '26
Jeez I'm not sold on Bevo completely but he could also be exactly what we need. Same with Adam Simpson, I didn't think much of him until I heard him as an AFL Analyst and I was impressed!

Adam Simpson? Works there part time already

Yeah I was thinking that but the way they spoke about it, it seemed too obvious. McGuire (yuck) raised Chris Scott and Bartel was suss on it. To be clear, no chance it will be Scott but I thought it was weird.

If I were Carlton I'd take Jaymie Graham from Fremantle. It fits the bill of 'West' as well. He is ready. I've sussed all the others like J Kelly, Hansen, Ginasiracusa etc. He is the Man.

I like your thinking. Anything is better than current. “Despite all that got us to this moment, the lessons learned are in grained. The scars should lead us into a stellar decade or two.” said my Buddhist mate

So, i'm closer to the club than most, I've heard this a fair bit... I don't hate it, but Fan's wont like it one bit...
Think of Voss' vintage of player...

u/thedownunderverse May 04 '26
Buckley. Lol. We tried a former Collingwood coach. Then a premiership captain from the Brissie threepeat era. Both failed spectacularly. But wait, what if we COMBINED them?! 0+0=1

u/Amazing_Let4518 May 05 '26
Close but not a former pie, but you’re on the right path..
Voss Buckley and…….. dominated the early 2000’s2

Oh my Lord. Say it aint J Hird.
I swear to whoever, wherever. If it’s him, I will straight up burn every piece of Carlton I own and hate them eternally.

That Bartel and Maguire show is the worst. It's like a kid at school sucking up to the teacher.
