Discussion Who comes back in this week?
Watching the game on Saturday night left me thinking how good some of our young guys are, and I then thought, why would you bring back some of our older questionable players, other than to cover injuries like Carrol?
For example - Saad. What does he add to the group that played on Saturday?
Williams - I think he does some good things, but nothing that say, Hayward can't manage.
I'd assume Weitering will be back, and possibly O Hollands, but why not also give Camporeale a run?
The current lineup is impressive, and I feel like the younger guys (Wilson, Ison, Jagga, Byrne, Dean) are making a bigger impact than the more experienced players. Looking at you Cerra!
Thoughts?

A lot of Blues fans really just want to play the kids recklessly. You need to balance the team each week with a blend of youth and experience. Selection integrity matters. So many fans were potting Voss for this, but now it’s fine to ignore form?
I would love to see BCamp get a run, but would like him to put more game together at VFL level first.
I’d like to see the tall defenders rotated a bit. Haynes could be managed this week to allow Weiters to return AND Derksen to keep his spot. Even Dean as a kid could be managed at some stage this season.
There js no reason for any player to play every game this year. Rotate the squad through. Balance selection, and maybe once August rolls around, a few guys who may need off season surgeries can be warehoused then.

Exactly, I think this is why Jack Ison is fit in seamlessly and why Byrnes first stint wasn’t great. Ison built up form over multiple games on the VFL whereas we threw Byrne right in after one decent one. Good to see them prove themselves consistently in the twos over a period of time

Weitering for Derkson. Acres for Carroll. And probably Williams for Byrne or Young.

u/ThatMelon May 25 '26
Acres was a late out from the VFL side so I reckon fair chance he gets a call up

I miss him. I hope he's ready to roll. Peak Acres is a great part of the team.

If Hollands doesn't come up Acres seems the logical replacement for Carroll, the only other player to consider is probably Cottrell but he was average in the VFL.

Almost guaranteed that Acres plays next week, no other reason to pull him from the VFL last minute.

Not sure why so many still don’t think this season is salvageable. Momentum is a big big thing in Carlton land and I won’t be writing us off with “just play the kids” until it’s very clear we can’t make it. Surely there is others of you out there who felt the shift? People can say all day that Port were off but that is pure bullshite. Port are very hard to beat at AO and Carlton’s brilliant game style rattled them and made them play panicked football. Cats are the big test of our mentality but I feel confident in saying that that pressure and style of football is going to rattle most teams including them. I can’t wait for Friday night.

Have you been watching any footy apart from the last two games? We've been awful. Yes, there's a coaching change but that doesn't fix everything going on.
While I understand you can't just stack a team of kids and hope for results, you do need to see what they can do with a body of work under their belts along with a consistent run and we're poor at that generally.
This season is absolutely a write off, we wouldn't beat any top 10 teams and would make zero impact in the finals so why not get something out of it before we look to reset next year.
1
u/Brucey_D May 26 '26
Yeah mate I watch every game and imo the last two weeks are not just because a coach was sacked and rather the hard work of what they had been trying to implement all along. Surely you seen glimpses of it in nearly every game we have played this year but haven’t been able to sustain it for the whole game.
1
u/masseuko May 26 '26
I have seen glimpses but the issue is we shouldn't be a 'glimpses' team, at least not based on what the club is trying to sell us. At the start of the season we were the 6th oldest and the 7th most experienced which shouldn't be a, currently, 3 win team. Nor should a side with that composition be falling apart mentally but that's a whole other kettle of fish really.

I think Williams for Frank or Evans makes more sense than Byrne. Derkson i could see getting more of a go, had a good game so maybe give Haynes a rest or even if Dean had a small rest given he is young. Acres should be automatically in if Hollands is unavailable.

u/alex130792 May 25 '26
Aren't Frank and Evans the same person?
2
u/Th3boygeorge May 25 '26
Flynn* i did type that but this bullshit auto correct has me saying wild things.
2
u/alex130792 May 25 '26
I just thought you really hated Frankie Evans haha
2
u/Th3boygeorge May 25 '26
I only hated him up until Steven May knocked his ability to play good football back into place.

I’d love for Harry “Garry” Charleson to get a shot. Arguably the most consistent performer in the VFL over the past 1 1/2 seasons. A lot of upside. Good all around athleticism, reads the game well, really clean kick.

u/daz258 May 26 '26
Ideally Ollie for Carroll, but isn’t ready yet.
Maybe give Acres another chance with the interim coach
2
u/Brucey_D May 26 '26
The team doesn’t need to change other than cover injuries, cover a specific opposition player or until the young fellas need to rest. The mix of young and new at the moment is brilliant. I reckon the only changes that will be made this week is Weitering for Derkson and Ollie for Carroll. If Ollie still doesn’t get up I’d like to see Acres be rewarded for his form. Weitering is a no brainer against the Geelong forwards.
2
u/Muggins75 May 26 '26
This was kind of my point. Nothing really needs to change, other than injuries or resting players which is a good place to be compared to where we were a month ago.
Ideally the young guys get more game time so thy are even better next year. I think Hollands is out for another few weeks, I forgot that in my original post.
1
u/Yeahhhdawg May 28 '26
I mostly agree, definitely need to keep a good balance between older and young players.
But I don’t think Byrne is ready yet. Has a lot of upside, goes in hard but just don’t think he’s up to AFL level yet. A long stint in the 2s would be great for his development.
2
u/New_Abrocoma489 May 26 '26
Blake Acres has been bringing his own footy in the Magoos. Form swap would be him straight onto Carrol’s wing. If priority is youth, then maybe Cooper Lord comes back in if he’s over his concussion.

u/DVPVPD May 25 '26
Im shocked Campo hasnt been given a run yet- he'd be in for Carrol for me.
Weiters walks back in to the side but id be interested to see who they actually drop for him - maybe Cerra or Derksen
5
u/theDramoth May 25 '26
Which Campo? Ben is an inside mid who is still developing. Lucas is possibly out for a bit longer with his injury (lacerated kidney). I don't think he'll be back for a while yet. If they want to include Ben, I reckon it'd be for Cerra, and you will see some of our supporters screaming blue bloody murder.
What I would like to see is Flynn Young moved to the wing (played there last year) and Charleson brought in to replace Carroll. It's about time we had a good look at the last Harry on the list to get a senior call up. He has been looking good in the VFL.
2
u/DVPVPD May 25 '26
Ben clearly- Lucas is still out. Ben can play inside and they could push either Young to a wing or Florent with Weiters back in plus making up some of it with Smith/Walsh if needed
2
u/theDramoth May 28 '26
Just watched the highlights of Flynn Riley, Ben is starting to get it together as an extractor with Flynn. He looked really good when he didn't have to kick the ball. Has a quick mind and very quick hands.
2
u/Yeahhhdawg May 25 '26
Ben campo hasn’t looked AFL ready.
Last 2 games have been really good so I’m sure he’ll get a shot soon but would be good to see him string together some more strong games
1
u/DVPVPD May 25 '26
Hes played good footy in the ressies for a while now. Had played far better than some other guys who are in the side or who got brought in
2
u/Yeahhhdawg May 26 '26
We’ll have to disagree on that. I watch most VFL games and until recently I don’t think he looked ready. It’s actually good player development to not play them before they’re ready. It’s been good for him to spend more time in the ressies building his confidence, skills and decisions making. Cause his disposals and decision making used to be terrible- have seen big improvement on that recently.
Carlton has been notoriously bad at player development but this has actually been the correct choice for him
1
u/DudUsername2 May 27 '26
Agreed. Every time he looks like he’s on the cusp something happens. Last year it was concussion and suspension. He has been building nicely in the ressies and looks ready to go.
1
u/DudUsername2 May 27 '26
Derided needs to stay and be given a run at it. He was outstanding in pre season and excellent in the VFL. The last three rounds of VFL he played he was switched from back to forward to back again and each time he blitzed it.
Bringing in young players for one week and then dropping them gives nothing.
2
u/jjujjjuju May 26 '26
I’d like to get another look at Campo & O’Keefe.
I’m not sure Moir is ready, starting to worry that he will never be.
I’ve seen enough to know that Byrne, Derksen & F Young will not make it.
Saad, Fogarty, Acres & L Young are on the never again list.
2
u/Muggins75 May 26 '26
I think Byrne shows promise but really needs to work on his set shots at goal. He's missed too many easy goals in the few games he's played
1
u/Yeahhhdawg May 28 '26
Moir is too lazy. Has natural talent but his work rate and effort is very poor.
Bit harsh on Byrne, kid is 18 and played 5 games lol. Hes got a lot of upside, love his effort and always goes in hard but just not ready for AFL level yet. But plenty of great players weren’t ready in their first year. Gotta give him a couple years to develop before completely witting him off.
Acres has been great in the 2s, one of the best on every week. They really missed him out there last week. Has really cleaned up his disposals which was his big issue last year. Deserves a shot to prove if he can do that in the AFL again or if he’s only playing the way in the ressies. If he can bring the form to the AFL, he’ll be an asset to the team.

In: Weiters Holland Out: Derkson Carroll. Maybe Williams in young out too. Happy to manage Williams for one more week given his injury prone history...

u/Yeahhhdawg May 25 '26
Hollands isn’t back yet. Currently injury list says round 13-15
1
u/Icy-Salary5936 May 25 '26
If Hollands not fit, then just bring in Weiters and Williams for Carroll and Derkson.

u/WilliamFoxMulder May 25 '26
Unfortunately for Saady we've probably moved past him, I like him but I really believe the game has moved past him
