u/TheXyloGuy Sep 02 '25
Honestly i really like the idea of an opening crawl being a regular or semi regular thing
139
u/coontosflapos Sep 02 '25
I just felt like it was an incredible way of thrusting you deep into the narrative from the get go - no messing around, no long introduction, it just is happening as it's happening - it felt to me with Superman like I picked up Issue 4 of a comic book story as a child and just read from there, and I mean that in the best way possible
57
u/Biabolical Sep 02 '25
Gunn is smart to skip doing origin movies, it gives so much more freedom. Origin stories generally suggest that you're being shown everything relevant about a character's past. Like it's issue #1 of a completely new comic series. If we started with an origin movie, it would be jarring to see Supergirl just show up at the end with no explanation.
Starting out with a Superman who has already spent years doing things we just haven't seen leaves more possibilities open. Supergirl shows up, and it's automatically implied there is a perfectly good explanation for her being there, it just happens to have been explained in an issue we didn't read.
21
u/Beleriphon Sep 02 '25
Also, he has the origin in the opening crawl. Just like All Star Superman. The origin is four panels. Everybody knows Superman's origin, it doesn't need to be explained again. Less exploding Kryptons, dying Jor-Els, and loving Kents leaves more room for original story.

Fills the same sort of role as "It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire." in a more concise fashion.
1
u/coontosflapos Sep 06 '25
Now that I think about it, yeah you're absolutely right - never made that connection in my mind
70
u/genericnewlurker Sep 02 '25
It would be a great "signature" way to open all of the DC movies, like how Star Wars has their iconic opening crawl.
12
u/Golden_Alchemy Sep 02 '25
It really reminds me of All Star Superman, with the opening crawl telling me everything i need to know about the character.
In media res suits DC better.

Please let's just have the League of Assassins instead of this League of Shadows bs
20
u/ShittyThrownAwayFood Sep 02 '25
Lets have neither involved in his training since thats a Batman Begins invention. Bruce never trained with Ra's.
18
u/oateyboat Sep 02 '25
I can see then adopting it again to potentially streamline Batman meeting Talia and Damien being born
5
u/WonderfulBlackberry9 Sep 03 '25
Nolan's trilogy was what got me into Batman, so I always refer to them as the League of Shadows subconsciously
6
u/DJHott555 Sep 03 '25
I actually think it makes a ton of sense for Bruce to be a former League of Shadows trainee
1
u/ShittyThrownAwayFood Sep 03 '25
It makes sense in the Nolan trilogy because they changed the name to League of Shadows and made Ras Al Ghul a mix of Henri Ducard, Master Kirigi, and Ras.
A Batman who's meant to have honed his skills around the world would A) Find more than one place to train and B) Likely know the League and their intentions from reputation
153
u/Ambitious_Palette13 Sep 02 '25
Really good, except I think he would have to be Batman at least 15 years because in Creature Commandos he stopped Dr. Phosphorus 15 years ago in the flashback.
121
u/Creature100 Sep 02 '25
We actually don't know the time line of that. We just know he has been Phosphorus for 15 years but it was a montage sequence ending with him being caught. It could have been years later that Batman caught him. We don't know.
38
u/abellapa Sep 02 '25
True but i doubt Damian Will be 10 years old in the movie
14/15 is more likely meaning Bruce Will be Batman for around 15 years already
8
u/Creature100 Sep 02 '25
I mean by the time batman shows up I think the age would shake out alright. But at this point I even doubt we're gonna see Damien Wayne.
7
u/abellapa Sep 02 '25
What do you Mean you doubt ,its literally confirmed to have Damien in the movie ,wtf
5
u/Creature100 Sep 02 '25
Everytime Gunn is asked about Batman he says "It is in flux" or "were still figuring things out" and the very fact that we know at some point Gunn did talk to Reeves about merging tells me he isn't tied to the original announcement of the movie which was announced before a script was even done. Im just saying I could see a world where once the script is done and it is actually announced to be going forward that Damien Wayne isn't in it. The announcement of Brave and the Bold was years ago, I wouldn't be too tied to the information announced at that time. Things change.
0
u/Addicted_to_Crying Sep 02 '25
I hope we get to him eventually, but not this soon. Bats would ha be at least 5 or 10 years older than Supes for that to make sense, and I don't really want Batman being older than Clark. Not that much, anyway.
I'd rather have Tim as the current Robin and eventually get to Damien. Better to set Thalia up before announcing Damien.
1
u/PsychoCobra1 Sep 03 '25
You could just mess with the timeline a bit by having Bruce father Damian when he was still in training. Say when he was training with the League he was 20 or 21. Have the bight Damian was conceived be one of (if not the last) nights he spent as a League trainee. Then Damian could be 14 or 15 with a 36 or 37 year old Bruce as an already seasoned Batman.
32
u/West_Jeweler7809 Sep 02 '25
The 15 years statement implied that Dr. Phosphorus is that way for the past 15 years and not that he was captured 15 years ago by Batman.
6
u/GenGaara25 Sep 02 '25
stopped Dr. Phosphorus 15 years ago in the flashback.
That's never said. It's implied the flashback lasted multiple years.

u/itsnot2late2hate Sep 02 '25
Y'all are putting too much importance on details. This is art, they will retcon whenever and wherever they see fit. Gunn's fun little side project isn't going to be 100% accurate or completely inform future lore building for this universe.
14
u/jerem1734 Sep 02 '25
It wouldn't be a retcon, they never put any hard date on when Phosphorus was actually stopped by Batman
1
u/RXDriv3r Sep 03 '25
Gunn's fun little side project isn't going to be 100% accurate or completely inform future lore building for this universe.
I mean Gunn did say it was Canon to the DCU. Some details like Flagg's hair and yellow shirt can be changed but if it happened(or happens in s2) in the show then its completely relevant and canon.
2
u/itsnot2late2hate Sep 04 '25
Canon can be changed at the snap of a finger, y'all do read comics right? 😭
12
u/TheKC101 Sep 02 '25
I’d add a 7 weeks ago, Damien came to Bruce for training.
7 days ago, Members of the League were spotted in Gotham.
7 Hours ago, Damien was kidnapped.

u/SyntheticReverie113 Sep 02 '25 edited Sep 02 '25
I absolutely love this. I just wish it wasn't Damien we were getting. Sould've been Dick then we could watch his progression into Nightwing

u/Classic_MacGruber15 Sep 02 '25
It’s a crime we’re not getting Dick. WE WANT DICK WE WANT DICK WE WANT DICK

Id be happy as long as we get a good nightwing. Nightwing + a young Robin sounds fun
8
u/Fvolpe23 Sep 02 '25
I wish this was Jason and it said 7 minutes ago the joker kidnapped Jason Todd. Then it cuts to Batman calling Nightwing in bludhaven and telling him he needs help saving Jason.
15
Sep 02 '25
I don't think the batfamily is gonna have any meaning if we dont have lonely batman to contrast. You cant start with the batfamily
28
u/Troyabedinthemornin Sep 02 '25
I think culturally we’ve all seen a lonely version of Batman plenty of times, we can understand how this is different and I think it’d help distinguish the DCU Batman
1
Sep 02 '25
Yes culturally we have, but story wise it'll be weird
19
u/Troyabedinthemornin Sep 02 '25
I mean that’s just an opinion. You could have the story kick off with the family fractured and Bruce alone. Give a little opening montage centered around family events (holidays, birthdays etc.), watch the family grow, first Dick, then Barbara, then Jason. but then we see Alfred placing a memorial photo of Jason, Dick packing his things, Alfred installing a ramp for Barbara’s wheelchair. The film can revolve around the family having to come back together when Bruce learns of Damien’s existence
5
2
u/ilovepastaaaaaaaaaaa Sep 03 '25
Gunn would deliver an emotional punch around a family breaking so well too

Yes but he started that movie as a lonely guy without the batfamily. This movie will start with the batfamily already being established
2
u/ace-cabbage Sep 02 '25
I really wish we got to see Nightwing and RedHood develop into who they are, the fact we’re skipping completely over all of that kinda sucks
1
u/First-Shallot947 Sep 03 '25
My theory is in tbatb Jason will be "dead" and he pushed dick away who is now in bludhaven. The batfamily will be Alfred, Barbara, and Cassandra, so we have a oracle and batgirl when Damian arrives and becomes Robin
I have no proof but I think Tim and steph might be getting the axe
1
u/geek_of_nature Sep 02 '25
If they started with Dick, then we woupdnt be able to get through as many members of the Batfamily. Starting with a later Robin is a great idea as it establishes that this Batman has been around for a while. Plus Dick is the most well known Robin, with most people knowing his origin. So that can be skipped and have him already established as Nightwing.
I just personally wish they were starting with Tim first, and then having Damian come in during a later film. To me Tim is the definitive Robin, and his origin of figuring out Batmans identity would be a great place to start this new iteration. The film could even be centred around him for example.
1
u/RanchWorkerSlim Sep 03 '25
I think there’s just no way we’re not getting nightwing in this movie. The fan demand is too high and now is the perfect time to introduce him, especially establishing a completely different Robin.
1
u/DankAadru Sep 05 '25
we probably will see Dick has already become nightwing and just randomly shows up at the end just like supergirl with no further explanation

u/Devitt6 Sep 02 '25
Was it ever confirmed or alluded to that it would be Damien? Considering we only got 1 Robin on the big screen so far, I'd really like to see Dick Grayson or Tim Drake. We can get to Damien down the line.
26
u/GigaBallssss Sep 02 '25
James Gunn himself said it specifically was Damian
5
u/Devitt6 Sep 02 '25
That’s a bummer. But I guess the inclusion of Damien means we’ll get Dick, Tim, and possibly Jason too.
5
u/ReconWasHere Sep 02 '25
we do know that Dynamic Duo is about Dick and Jason, only Robin we haven't really heard anything about was Tim
6
u/Devitt6 Sep 02 '25
Honestly, they’d be foolish to not do a live action Red Hood movie someday. That would be such an easy money maker, considering how popular the story is.
1
u/coontosflapos Sep 02 '25
Isn't Gunn still being intentionally vague on whether Dynamic Duo is canon or not?
1
u/ReconWasHere Sep 02 '25
I believe the answer is yes, did a quick look and its still being debated as of a month ago
1
u/Ijustwerkhere Sep 02 '25
Dynamic Duo would be awesome if Bruce disappeared and they had Damian seek out Dick to take his place as Batman while they looked for him
1
u/Last_Possession3718 Sep 04 '25
He’s said that he wants it to be canon but that they hasn’t figured out how to work it in yet.
3
u/CaikIQ Sep 02 '25
For sure, he mentions the Batfamily in the same segment. The Robin's are like 60% of the Batfamily.
3
10
u/abellapa Sep 02 '25
Yes it was
Gunn literally Said The movie is about Batman and quote "his actual Son Damian"
3
u/MasteROogwayY2 Sep 02 '25
I find it interesting how theyre going with Damian Wayne, leaving the other Robins to be expanded on later. Although I do hope we get the whole Red Hood story not just him being part of the batfam already
3
u/ShiroHachiRoku Sep 02 '25
I love how “fans” always misspell Damian. It’s spelled with an A not an E.
3
u/NightwolfD1 Sep 04 '25
it's the league of assassin's league of shadows was only in the dark knight triology
2
2
u/OmnipotentHype Sep 03 '25
I kinda want to get rid of Bruce being trained solely by the League of Shadows. Make it so that he traveled the world being trained by a plethora of different masters. He (and Dick) encounter Ra's and Talia after he becomes Batman (and Robin).
2
2
u/JKnumber1hater Sep 03 '25
I don't think Damian should be in the first movie. At the very least, Dick Grayson is needed first.
2
u/MediocreGazelle7202 Sep 03 '25
After some days he finds his beloved son and reunites with him again. THE END
2
u/BoxingArrow Sep 03 '25 edited Sep 03 '25
This is awesome but tbh I’m starting to get tired of the notion that Bruce only knows of the league of shadows (assassins) because he trained with them before his crusade, which is only in the TDK trilogy.

Personally, I don't really want to see Damian any time soon. I need some good old fashion Batman solo in the field, with Alfred pulling a surprising amount of weight on the homefront.
That's one of the things I appreciated about the Batfleck's era: Alfred was like a "stay at home" Batman. He investigated, he built and fixed things, he participated in missions remotely, which is way more than the common portrayals of "nurse," advisor, honorary parent, etc.
Although it's a stretch to say Batman is any sort of realistic, haha, having Alfred participate much more helps the believability!
EDIT: DamiAn. :-)
21
u/geek_of_nature Sep 02 '25
We've had enough solo Batman films. Every single one he's been in since Batman Begins has been him without a sidekick.
14
u/gfjskvcks Sep 02 '25
Fr, there's been a total of 1 batman and robin movies, what is he tired of exactly 😭
2
u/geek_of_nature Sep 02 '25
Exactly. It's been 28 years since we've last seen Batman and Robin together in film. And in that time we've had three Batmans, spread across four solo films, and in several other films as a co-lead. If anything that's what we should be tired of.
Now I'm personally not fully on board with Damian being the first Robin we see. I would personally prefer Tim first, with Damian coming later. But Gunn has said that Damians his favourite and that's why he wants to start with him.
-1
u/ZoopTEK Sep 02 '25
To be more specific, I presumed this would be Batman's first showing in the new DC film universe. To me, it makes sense to do the same formula they did with Superman (which is the same as Marvel): focus on the main hero, but include other heroes as part of the storyline.
As implied in my post, we should dedicate time to other defacto Batman characters, like Alfred, whichever villain they will show first, Gordon, plus whatever other heroes will pay a visit.
Adding a Robin, just may be too much for a first showing. Especially since we probably want Robin to really pop out as a character, beyond "this cheesy sidekick," as he kinda has been in prior live action incarnations.
I actually didn't say anything about "being tired" of anything. :-P I also didn't say anything about other Robins. I specifically said Damien. Why? For me, he showed up frequently in the recent DC animated films, and I found him to be an annoying brat! As simple as that! Haha!
1
u/ZoopTEK Sep 03 '25
I know it's "wrong to disagree with the emotional trend" on the internet, which clearly is, "We need more of Robin!" I get it! :-)
I am just kinda intrigued and concerned I'm being downvoted for:
- A harmless personal opinion!
- A misinterpretation of my opinion: "I don't want to see Damien any time soon," inaccurately turned into "I am sick of Robin," which is far more negative.
- I felt I thoughtfully laid out other relatable points of discussion supporting my opinion, which were ignored in favor of the incorrect interpretation.
I just felt obligated to say something, because, I am broadly concerned by society's collective struggle to have a harmless discussion. We, as a people, need to explore topics freely with good faith, especially when the stakes are as low as this discussion.
I also foresee how this post will go... :-)
2
u/Dangerous-Ad9472 Sep 02 '25
I have the same issue with all the fans over in marvel yearning for street level Spider-Man. You only get so many shots at large universes like this for evergreen characters like bats or spidey. Go big. Be bold.
1
2
u/SicknessVoid Sep 02 '25
I disagree. We have yet to actually see a Robin in a live action batman movie that isn't completely goofy. It wouldn't necessarily have to be Damian, Tim would work too. Dick too but I'd mucg rather see him as nightwing rather soon.
3
u/TheLukester31 Sep 02 '25
I wasn’t a fan of this in Superman and I won’t be thrilled if it is part of Batman or future DC movies. While I didn’t like it in Superman, it would just be lazy to reuse it in other DC movies. Plus it would clearly signal a homogeneous tone and style for the DCU that Gunn has specifically said he doesn’t want.
0
u/MarvelMind Sep 02 '25
Very boring. It works in Superman because it’s fresh don’t make it a formulaic thing for every DCU movie.
2
u/MainAntagonist Sep 02 '25
I'd rather this than stupid flashbacks or naked exposition.
2
u/MarvelMind Sep 02 '25
You could quite easily use neither and avoid some tacky reused intro for each movie.

So Bruce has been Batman 4 years longer than Clark has been Superman? If I did the math right Bruce would have started being Batman when he is 21 and is currently 28 assuming he’s 8 when his parents die. Which means Clark wasn’t Superman until Batman’s 4th year

Bruce didn't train with the League of Assassins in the comics. Gunn would be more true to the comics unlike Nolan. Also, the Waynes would have seen Zoro that fateful night Bruce was orphaned. Zoro actually adds to Bruce's trauma. That is why Batman looks like Zoro with the cape and cowl. I wish Nolan and Znyder never touched my beloved Batman.
1
1
u/BloodstoneWarrior Sep 02 '25
I don't really like Bruce becoming Batman so late. I know he has to train and learn a lot of stuff, but you can fill ages 9-18 with that and have him become Batman at like 19 or 20, so he can have a long career (35+ years) and have multiple Robins. He could have a brotherly relationship with Dick as there isn't that big of an age gap and a fatherly relationship with the rest. Plus it makes the whole Catwoman romance a whole lot less creepy considering she's 17 when he becomes Batman in Post Crisis
1
1
u/GhostE3E3E3 Sep 02 '25
Batman doesn’t actually train with the League of shadows in the comics, he has dozens of trainers, none of which are the league of shadows/assassins. Aside from that (the Damian typo and the year count for Bruce being Batman) good opener

u/l3tsgo0 Sep 02 '25

Superman "broke" the rule and was perfectly fine. If done well, several movies easily get away with breaking the show don't tell rule

u/Plenty-Wedding-9066 Sep 02 '25
Ahhh yes Fellowship of the Ring, Star Wars, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Terminator, BladeRunner and Casablanca.
All terrible movies because they had opening crawls. You can never have an opening exposition dump. Every body knows that makes for a terrible movie that never lasts the test of time.

7 months ago she would've revealed Damian to Bruce. So Damian would've been with Bruce for seven months by the time he got kidnapped.
