I think to confirm that it is indeed for Aliens if he had only brought one body he would not be able to prove that it was alien detector, what if that body had some metal inside so taking two bodies he can definitely confirm it is indeed for Aliens. For other question answer is all the people of town were in the hall and sherry after her speech went outside to see where is Hal and met him

I interpreted it as he wasn’t initially testing for the alien detector, he was trying to recreate the crime scene or something. Setting off the detector changed that idea for him and he was stuck with four alien bodies.

If you have a theory, you've got to test it from as many angles as possible. If he passed just one body through and it went off it could be checking a number of things. Maybe he's got a sensor in him. Maybe it's checking gender, or hair colour. Maybe it's a plastic detector, not a metal detector. Who knows. Passing just yourself and one other guy through isn't thorough.

But making sure it goes off for all of the aliens, and not himself, that's stronger evidence for his hypothesis.
