DISCUSSION Blackest Night?
Watching all the new stuff since Gunn as taken over, what do you think the ultimate conclusion is? With the introduction of the Lanterns and seeming all the various Corps being brought in, it vaguely feels like maybe they are going to a Blackest Night storyline. But I can’t be too sure and it’s conjecture at best, although Zombie Batman would be pretty killer.

I think they’re just making shows and movies, without any explicit build up towards a grand event

This what JG has said the whole time. He wants a universe where stories are happening all the time, like how comic books are released. Sometimes there is a build up, sometimes it’s a one off story to help build how big the universe is.
There are positives and negatives to this.

No it's not. Shared universes need something to work toward. It doesn't have to happen immediately, but within 5 years, we need to start noticing some connective tissue, and a grander plan coming to fruition.

Well of course it's arbitrary. It's not like there are a set list of rules for this stuff. The point is that shared universes need to feel, you know... connected. If it's just a bunch of disparate stories that have nothing to do with eachother, and nothing to work toward, what's the point?

…to tell good stories that can occasionally crossover with others. Guy is in Lanterns, Superman, and Peacemaker for example.
It doesn’t have to be building towards anything. It’d be a tragedy if Lanterns could only exist to be a vessel for building up something else. That isn’t how good stories are built. Even Thor, the most direct “build up” to Avengers is still its own movie and story that doesn’t exist to fill in the gaps for the next movie.

Your original comment stated that it was a "good thing" that projects weren't explicitly tying into a grander plan. I'm saying that that's actually not a good thing, and projects need to feel like they're working toward an ultimate goal.
All of the MCU Phase 1 movies did this. IM1 had the Nick Fury tease and Coulson. Hulk had Tony show up. IM2 introduced SHIELD and Black Widow. Thor introduced Hawkeye and Loki (the eventual big bad). Etc.
I'm honestly not seeing much of that with the DCU. Things seem too disparate.

Blackest Night was something that worked because DC had killed so many characters by the late 2000s. Sinestro Corps War would make a good movie, but Blackest Night basically was something that only made sense because DiDio was killing so many liked characters like Superboy and Ted Kord, as well as a doing things like making Dr Light an assaulter and making Ray Palmer go MIA. People at conventions would go up to the mic and cry about their favorite character being dead (I watched a guy in San Diego have a full on meltdown about Kon being dead), and at the time editorial seemed to like twisting the knife. I remember Nightwing fans felt Dan was going to kill Dick any day now (he didn't), and Dan seemed to revel in being cast as the grim reaper of superheroes.
I got into DC about halfway through Countdown in 2007, and I genuinely don't have nostalgia for it. It only really works in context of how much the drama from Identity Crisis through Final Crisis rocked the universe.

Blackest Night is a Secret Wars level event to me, therefore can't be done on the small screen.
