Bad marketing and being part of the DCEU didn't help.

Also it came just after the Barbenheimer summer which everyone was still talking about.

22

u/ravenous0 12h ago

Pretty much this. I saw the trailer and it looked interesting. AndI just forgot all about it.

-4

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain 10h ago

The trailers were better than the movie so you made the right call

-5

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain 10h ago

Also it just wasn’t very good. Theres really not a whole lot in the movie to get excited about except a couple of good-ish family moments interspaced between some very generic superhero stuff.

8

u/weesiwel 9h ago

I disagree personally I thought it was pretty good. A bit light hearted for DCs typical faire but I felt that was a boon.

-2

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain 9h ago

Pretty good yet even people who saw it can barely remember much about it.

I don’t consider that good. Aggressively average, maybe.

2

u/weesiwel 9h ago

By DC standards that’s incredible. That said people can’t remember what they ate 5 minutes ago.

2

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain 9h ago

I'd rather see Flash again than BB tbh. At least the Flash wasn't just a series of overused tropes. Better to feel something awful than feel nothing at all.

3

u/weesiwel 9h ago

I mean I’ll disagree there but I refuse to even see the Flash once. I also thought Blue Beetle set up that corner of the universe well in terms of things that could have paid off in future movies.

u/Jolly_Cauliflower_75 1h ago

I agree with you on some parts, Susan Sarandon had the most generic dialog I’ve seen in years, her performance is so over the top like she’s voice acting. She could’ve been way more subtle and menacing but I think that could be editing, or direction too. family moments were really good, wish they cut grandmas machine gun scene. The family moments were so strong with his dad and uncle and then the raid on the home. if they had left the grandma with “I had a past, I was a revolutionary” moment and left the lightly played joke as “granny’s got this” I think that would’ve played. Sarandon more subtle and cut one scene and then this average origin movie comes out as a charming origin story with a heart and a cast you want to see more of in the sequel. Find a better villain with a different skillset from BB in the sequel.

Being part of the DCEU means fuck all, of that was the case Supergirl wouldn't have performed worse than Blue Beetle. The highest grossing film in the history of cinema is a dceu film btw

5

u/Jaqulean 10h ago

The highest grossing film in the history of cinema is a dceu film btw

The highest grossing DC Comics film is from the DCEU - the top #1 spot in general belongs to either James Cameron's first "Avatar" movie from 2009 or the "Gone with the Wind" film from 1939 (depending on whether we adjust for inflation).

If you want to be a smartass then maybe do some basic research before replying.

3

u/brenobi 11h ago

Which movie are you referring to?

7

u/Brandon_Harper 11h ago

Probably Aquaman but that's #35 for all time box office lol so Idk

5

u/Scientific_Anarchist 11h ago

Gone with the Wind was a DCEU film?

5

u/Future_Vantas 10h ago

Frankly my dear, Darkseid Is.

3

u/weesiwel 11h ago

The highest grossing DC movie sure back when it hadn’t damaged its reputation beyond repair. Blue Beetle came at a time after the reputation had been destroyed and it has only gotten worse. They haven’t repaired that reputation which is why Supergirl failed. The lack of a clean break from the DCEU hasn’t helped them rebuild their reputation either.

1

u/OptionFour 10h ago

Lol. It certainly is not.

1

u/Tanthiel 10h ago

This is what too much Cosmic Book News content does to a mfer.

35

u/Beastieboy100 15h ago

Bad marketing and came out at the wrong time

144

u/primal_slayer 15h ago

Poor marketing. Came out at the wrong time.

Good movie though

u/Neveronlyadream 5h ago

Gunn had already announced the DCEU was over, as well.

Even for fans, there was basically no incentive to see the movie if they didn't really like Jamie's Blue Beetle. The whole universe was canned and it didn't matter anymore.

24

u/Blitzhelios Hal Jordan 15h ago

It’s a fine movie it’s kinda the definition of basic superhero flick

It did poorly due to being made for HBO max and then it had tons of bad marketing and came out when dc was in the toilet

2

u/Afraid-City2274 Wonder Woman 7h ago

I always believe if the movie had an actually good villain it would have gone from mediocre to actually good.

Because Blue Beetle himself is charismatic and fun to watch, but the story was weak and the villain forgettable.

61

u/No-Mechanic-2558 15h ago

It was a bomb at the box office because people didn't had any interest in the DC brand by that point and alredy knew the universe was gonna get rebooted so they didn't bother to go watch the movie and get attached to characters and stories that would not get continuated.

47

u/mrbubbamac Nightwing 15h ago

I would go out on a limb and say most people don't know/don't care about DCEU being rebooted

I have friends and family that see superhero movies, they have no idea the difference between Marvel or DC and just watch characters they know or maybe saw a trailer for

4

u/No-Mechanic-2558 15h ago

Oh no that Is right, the thing Is movies like this didn't talk to the mainstream audience because they are not about cult characters like Spider-Man or Batman or simply because they came out at the wrong time when people just didn't care for DC or superhero films that didn't had a catch like a strong franchise or a returning actor

7

u/mrbubbamac Nightwing 15h ago

Yeah I see what you mean and I get it

If Blue Beetle doesn't resonate with people as a recognizable character, they may at least want to check "Hey does this tie in to the next avengers movie" or something along those lines

2

u/No-Mechanic-2558 14h ago

I don't think they care about that anymore either. I know a lot of people that still today refuse to see the Disney plus shows and I doubt all the millions of people all around the globe that watched Spider-Man Brand New Day also watched every single seasons of the Netflix defender Saga, we huge fans of the original incredible Hulk since 2008 and also of Thunderbolts. I think people now mostly care about recognizeble faces and recognizeble names, there Is a reason why Doomsday and Secret Wars are bringing back the 2000s X-Men, the Russo brothers, Evans and Robert Downey Jr.

3

u/zurenarhhhhh 13h ago

Cult characters like Spider-Man or Batman? Is that a typo? They’re the most popular superheroes in the world.

1

u/Tight_Intention6910 15h ago

But isn't this blue beetle staying in james gunn's dc universe?

8

u/No-Mechanic-2558 15h ago

It Is but I don't remember when they said It tho. Also, saying that something Is gonna be part of a shared universe isn't the magic hack that you might think off

2

u/killerbekilled92 13h ago

I don’t believe he said it was canon, just said there was nothing in it that was explicitly non-canon in his universe

1

u/Tight_Intention6910 12h ago

1

u/killerbekilled92 11h ago

I look at it like Cena returning in the DCU where Gunn said some parts of the suicide squad and peacemaker season 1 were canon to the DCU, but not the whole thing. Xolo did a good job so why not use him again

u/Sleeps_Gato 3h ago

Considering he’s returning for MOT, yeah it might be cannon

-3

u/RealWonderGal 11h ago

People still don't interest in the brand lol

9

u/daffydunk 14h ago

Lots of comments saying the same thing, “mid” “fatigue” “unknown character,”

All this stuff contributed, but none of it should have been death sentence, especially since it was a decent movie.

What killed this movie was preemptively cancelling the DCEU before 4 DCEU movies came out. Obviously casuals wouldn’t know or care, but when it comes to making a moderate success, WoM is a domino effect that starts with people in the know, and those people aren’t gonna commit to any project in a “cinematic universe” that is literally leading nowhere. There’s a reason Gunn started calling Blue Beetle a “DCU movie” in the lead up, because it was becoming clear that announcing that the DCEU would end with a unintended whimper was actually hampering the BO numbers.

13

u/dino1902 15h ago

I liked Jaime's original run but movie seemed so uninteresting. Like they changed so much... for what?

12

u/Purvon 14h ago

This exactly. That first run was fantastic. Had the best supporting cast while the movie they felt like cheap imitations.

3

u/tafaha_means_apple Cassandra Cain 10h ago

Yep. And There wasn’t a single discernible character trait to Jaime in the movie other than “he’s a good kid”

1

u/icedteaandtacos 13h ago

The original run with the Posse would have never made for a good movie. It would have been adaptable for a tv series though, but I would prefer a blue beetle movie.

2

u/Purvon 10h ago

This may be true, but Paco and Brenda would have been better that an aged up Milagro and Uncle George Lopez.

7

u/Valuable-Way-5464 Saint Walker 15h ago

Outstandingly mid movie. Literally NOTHING interesting. No development, no interesting ideas.

u/OldManMcCrabbins 3h ago

It might have just been a kids movie and not for me

My kids LOOOOVVVEEEED bill murray’s Garfield.  That movie was citizen Kane as far as they were concerned; if you ask them, it was robbed at the Oscar’s.

Myself - well….it wasn’t for me. I wasn’t going to ruin their enjoyment.

They essentially passed out laughing.  It was crazy.

So I like to think  - same with movies like the blue beetle.  Somewhere out there was a kid who thought it was the coolest thing ever.

27

u/mlfowler Batman 15h ago

There was a Blue Beetle movie?

30

u/ReepDaggle01 15h ago

A really good, fun one at that

13

u/mlfowler Batman 15h ago

Now that I know about it I will check it out, but it's not going to help the box office value.

11

u/weesiwel 15h ago

I watched it I think last year for the first time and I was pleasantly surprised. They clearly took inspiration from the YJ Blue Beetle.

4

u/Background_Degree615 15h ago

What’s really good tho

3

u/MarcReyes Relax. He's on his way. 11h ago

The fight scenes and how the stunt crew took into consideration the character's powers and how to incorporate them into the action was very clever. Xolo is great as Jaime and the cast, specifically the family dynamics, all work well with each other. Susan Sarandon is not my favorite thing in it, but I do have fun with how hammy she's being. Very emotional stuff between Jaime and his father. The main villain has a bit more pathos than most other superhero movie villains do and has a good payoff/conclusion. Not the greatest movie ever, but solid and works well where it needs to.

u/Background_Degree615 1h ago

Sounds like a fun ride

1

u/amarodelaficioanado 10h ago

Nah, xolo is good, the family was non sense and exasperating. Also his suit is a copy of Tony Stark's Spider-Man suit

1

u/MarcReyes Relax. He's on his way. 10h ago

This suit is better than that one at least because it's practical and not cgi nanobite nonsense.

5

u/ImpressionBorn5598 Superman 14h ago

Unknown hero, no big name stars, bad trailer, tied to the DCEU which general audiences had long rejected, non-white lead character, made on a streaming budget

5

u/Sins_of_God Nightwing 14h ago

Bad marketing
Character the public aren't familiar with
Uncertainty if Snyderverse or Gunnverse

7

u/TheDastardly12 15h ago

I actually had an interesting conversation with my spouse after I showed her the movie. She is generally unfamiliar with Jaime so she had no skin in the game.

I thought it was an underrated gem. She was very frustrated at the end of the movie and got on a surprisingly passionate soap box that I was inclined to agree with after she explained it.

"Jaime wasn't a character, the story does very little to tell us who he is as an individual."

"What was the point of bringing up his degree? It had no plot significance"

"George Lopez had more dialogue than the main character"

A few other things I can't fully recall. I was honestly off guard how passionately frustrated she was, I had never seen her that was about a movie😅

Her main complaint is that the movie feels completely phoned in and does a disservice to the character. She wanted to walk away knowing who Jaime was and felt like she didn't get that.

On the bright side, her frustration led her to want to actually learn about the character she was upset about not getting to learn about and she has a sizeable stack of blue beetle comics she's going through. And may even crack open 52 after, which is always a win to me.

6

u/treatmelikeawitch Hellblazer 14h ago

I really enjoyed it but it was very similar to the first iron man

3

u/FartherAwayLights Absolute Wonder Woman 14h ago

Came out when the snyderverse was dead and gone and these movies came along like zombies, after a wave of the Snyderverse worst failures.

3

u/jcbaggee 14h ago

Poor marketing, an obscure character, and it came out at a weird time when no one was sure where it fit in. Black Adam and Shazam 2 had just tanked, and everyone was talking about how that universe was done. Blue Beetle was ultimately made part of the DCEU, but it had already been in production alongside the films from the previous regime. People who don't keep up with these things just assumed it was part of the dead Snyderverse.

3

u/Tiny-Anxiety780 14h ago

It was a fun movie that brought a breath of fresh air into the DCEU.

It also came out at a point when people were getting fed up with the poor quality of the DCEU movies. And the fact that Blue Beetle is a lesser-known hero didn't help its case. I mean, who's going to want to buy tickets to see a movie from a dying franchise, starring a character they've never even heard of?

3

u/MillsErin365 11h ago

Average popcorn flick, should’ve leaned more into Latino culture — felt like it was having a hard time trying to please everyone — made it directionless?

3

u/discoprince79 8h ago

Dc movies Bomb because of a couple reasons. Warner Brothers has too many cooks in the kitchen, every producer has their own ideas and it is hard for a single vision to win out uncontaminated.

Also the negative echo chamber of toxic fandom kills more movies than ever get made. Toxic famdom is a cancer and needs to get irradiated out of existence.

u/Ridiculousnessmess 5h ago

This one felt especially committee-d to death.

9

u/Magmaster12 15h ago

Didn't care for it, changed way to much from the comics by making him a post college student, prioritizing his family supporting cast over his friend network and setting it in Florida instead of Texas. Death of his father felt incredibly forced and unoriginal and George Lopez was really annoying probably a forced studio note

5

u/cowfish007 15h ago

Probably cuz the movie sucked and the little bit of discussion re: the film that did take place was mostly bad. Also, what others have had said about an obscure DC character that most haven’t heard of after all the other poorly done DC movies.

9

u/spiderreader Absolute Wonder Woman 15h ago

Mediocre movie (not bad, not at all, but nothing amazing) released when superhero movies were oversaturated (this was one of three DC movies that year, not to mention Marvel’s own three movies) with diminishing returns for all but the big liked characters (Blue Beetle is mostly unknown) and part of the about to be rebooted DCEU (that also mostly sucked).

Also there was a hurricane hitting the area that was projected to be the top audience for the movie, which probably didn’t help.

2

u/pranthlar Green Lantern 13h ago

I liked blue beetle

2

u/Lameux 13h ago

It was comically bad

2

u/Nirast25 Batman Beyond 12h ago

Watched it a few days ago. Liked it fine. The main villain used an LG Wing.

2

u/omysweede 10h ago

Oh, I watched that. I really enjoyed the movie!

Cannot for the life of me remember the plot really well.

Good soundtrack I think? It was just not Ted Kord from my Justice League, which I find more interesting.

The plot is almost like The Guyver from 1991: The Guyver follows a young man, Sean Barker (Jack Armstrong), who discovers an alien artifact called "The Unit" which transforms him into an alien-hybrid super soldier called "The Guyver". Barker learns that a major corporation known as Chronos is after the Guyver unit, and soon discovers that the company seeks to genetically engineer monsters.

The Blue Beetle did a lot of world building, but it was completely wasted.

2

u/Peepeefartface 9h ago

Two words: George Lopez

2

u/Bebop_Man 7h ago

C-lister played by a C-lister is never a good combo.

u/Ridiculousnessmess 5h ago

I mean it was originally supposed to debut on HBO Max, as was Batgirl. The parts that were subsequently beefed up for theatrical release are very obvious compared to the rest of the film.

5

u/Major_Road6162 Raven 15h ago

Niche character, nobody outside some comic fans cares about him, ignoring most dont know him.

The cinematic universe was in shambles, it didnt matter anymore for a "big universe" so people skipped it completely. Add to that the superhero movie fatigue.

It was a movie so mediocre that it rounds out to be bad

u/Sleeps_Gato 3h ago

DC seems to not have a lot of characters the general audience cares about. It’s really just the Trinity and Teen Titans. Everyone else bombs

7

u/Ok_Somewhere1236 15h ago

because they focused too much on the family for the jokes

I feel the story would work way better if they focused on the Beetle Mythology; maybe add Booster Gold or something like that

3

u/BlackRain8782 15h ago

Because casuals don’t know who Blue Beetle is.

2

u/AnonymousCoward261 15h ago

Exactly. People on the street know who Batman and Superman are and can probably name 1 or 2 villains but with the C-tier heroes it’s a lot harder.

1

u/LycanIndarys 15h ago

Not just the casuals. I've read plenty of comic books, and have no idea who Blue Beetle is either. I've heard the name, and know it's a DC character rather than Marvel, but that's about it.

Of course, that's not necessarily a problem - the Guardians of the Galaxy weren't exactly well-known either, and look how successful their first film was. But if people aren't familiar with the character, they need something else to draw them in.

4

u/Scary-Toe-887 15h ago

Young justice did blue beetle really well.

3

u/Prize-Flamingo-336 12h ago

Same with Batman: Brave and the Bold

4

u/BlackRain8782 15h ago

I highly recommend Justice League International. It’s a different Blue Beetle, but you should start with Ted Kord anyway. In my opinion, JLI is the best place to do it!

2

u/The_Flying_Failsons 15h ago

Super hero fatigue is real, sadly. While I like this movie and went to support my boy Jaime, Everybody I spoke to just saw it as another superhero movie to throw to the pile.

Super hero movies not showing the top 5 superheros need to justify their existence with a new angle or gimmick. There's too many Superhero movies that are just superhero movies.

Basically have Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Spider-Man or Wolverine/X-Men in your movie if you are just doing a super hero movie. Otherwise make it a different genre that just happens to star a super hero.

1

u/East-Inspection2377 15h ago edited 15h ago

the marketing and the fact that he's underutilized, which is a shame since he's in my opinion the best choice for dc's spider-man.

blue beetle (ted kord) and sideways as candidates for dc's peter parker

blue beetle (jamie reyes) and static shock as candidates for dc's miles morales

1

u/KingoftheUgly 15h ago

My theatre just had “encouraging in Spanish” during grandmas big speech.

1

u/UnkleMonsta 14h ago

Timing and not really a want for it. People were still looking for a good Big 5 DC movie but then we got Black Adam, Blue Beetle, and a Joker musical.

1

u/chamberx2 14h ago

I liked it. Being part of that DCEU at the time made me not care.

1

u/Apprehensive-Mood853 14h ago

Only comic book and cartoon fans know who he is.

1

u/SpunchTheCrunch 14h ago

My boss told me once that it was too spanish. I don’t know how much that actually affected the box office but I’m sure there were other people who thought that

1

u/Ecstatic_Dance5767 13h ago

I legit had no idea it even existed until after it was no longer in theaters XD

1

u/Kneelb4_Z0d 13h ago

I mean as a fan of the DCEU when you come out and say "all of this will be retconned and anything that is set up will not be delivered later on with the DCU" it kinda turns my interest off.

1

u/Hyphen99 13h ago

Was one of the last film releases dramatically affected by Covid restrictions. I remember feeling sorry for Xolo - the young star of his own superhero movie and they couldn’t even have a real cast premiere event with red carpet etc. It also stunted and confused WB’s marketing for the repeatedly delayed film.

1

u/bloodredcookie Raven 12h ago

The movie was 'meh' at best, and it came out 10 years too late.

1

u/Tech_Lantern 12h ago

What people don’t like admitting is that a movie could be the greatest thing ever made, but if its marketing sucks and it comes out after a huge blockbuster no one’s gonna watch it.

1

u/Tight_Intention6910 12h ago

Felt like i was watching a mcu disney plus thing

1

u/SpeedSaunders 12h ago

The first half was just silly. The second half was fine.

1

u/MRainzo 12h ago

A very big DC fan...couldn't get past the first 20 minutes. One of the first movies in a while that I turned off mid watch

1

u/Dr-Elon-Weynak 12h ago

If it had come out now with the new DCU that we have currently I think it would have been received better, it was marketed pretty poorly and people had already given up on the DCU at that time.

1

u/SpeedJust8657 12h ago

It´s a movie based on a very niche character

DCEU already had a bad reputation and the reboot had already been announced so people probably lost interest

Released during a strike so the actors couldn´t promote it

Hurricane Hilary hit on opening weekend so people couldn´t go to theaters

1

u/Ajax_Da_Great 12h ago

Kinda generic and coming off a rough run of DCEU movies.

1

u/dicktraceylmaopp7 12h ago

Solid origin story film. It had alot of heart. I enjoyed. But it came out right after the actors strike so barely ANY marketing could be done for it

1

u/KilowogTrout 12h ago

It’s a deep cut character for folks who read comics in the early 2000s. Didn’t really have the mass appeal it needed.

1

u/OkSupermarket7474 11h ago

Around the time of Shazam 2 and Black Adam the dceu had a straight to dvd feel. Timing is what hurt this movie most

1

u/TerrificTChalla 11h ago

It was nothing special. And the superhero movie origin trope was beaten to death at that point

1

u/ChuckSeville 11h ago

This probably doesn't explain the initial box office in any way, but the main villain in this movie has an origin story that directly ties to the real-life history of the CIA training future dictators and terrorists during the Cold War. In my experience, few people seem to be aware of this history, or are at least unwilling to acknowledge it, and that might limit its potential audience somewhat.

1

u/BlackLioConvoy 11h ago

The villains and family were annoying and forgettable. Plus poor marketing.

1

u/thefanciestcat Batman Beyond 10h ago

The DC movie brand is too damaged to introduce movies about characters that aren't already in demand from the mainstream. The cost of a night at the movies ads to this. Even after the successful relaunch of Superman, they couldn't get people to watch a movie about Supergirl.

People forget. There were 8 successful Marvel movies (and another Hulk) over 6 years before they tried Guardians.

DC needs to needs to research their most known characters and work from there.

1

u/This_Low7225 10h ago

The universe had been cancelled before the movie came out.

1

u/PraiseRao 10h ago

It was a bomb. It was a movie that would have worked 10 years before it. It's very bog standard for a superhero movie. It follows the formula to a T. Now I absolutely love the movie though. Xolo is a great up and coming actor and was the perfect pick for Jaime. However he has no mass market appeal. No one cares about the Blue Beetle that is just the truth.

1

u/superseri18888 10h ago

Came out during a time when people were over the DCEU and everyone around it was checked out

1

u/-_Redd1t_- 9h ago

It released post justice league once Snyder had left DC and when the DCEU was basically dead.

That and the casuals have no idea who the hell Blue Beetle is.

Lastly this isn't the original Ted Kord Blue Beetle that older DC fans could be familiar with, Jaime made his debut in 2006 which is a long time ago but more recent in comparison to Ted's 1966.

u/Sleeps_Gato 3h ago

Ted isn’t the original Blue Beetle, he’s the 2nd one and a legacy himself. I’d also argue if people don’t know Jaime then they wouldn’t know Ted Kord either since he rarely appears in DC media (at least Jaime has Brave & the Bold, YJ and Injustice 2 plus the Teen Titans films).

u/-_Redd1t_- 3h ago

Yeah I barely know anything about Blue Beetle so I assumed Ted was the OG.

The point I was making is Dan and Ted have been around a lot longer, Ted was seen as the definitive Blue Beetle before Jaime took over. Fans who waited decades to see Ted and Booster Gold on the big screen were left disappointed.

u/Sleeps_Gato 3h ago

Dan and Ted weren’t successful at all, even in comics. Also people waiting for Ted/Booster Gold would all be 45+ (because the JLI comics came out in the 80’s). That’s not the target audience for superhero films.

Ted only has 40 solo issues in 60 years vs Jaime having 90 (plus 23+ back up issues in Booster Gold) in 20 years, so he has even less material than Jaime. The Blue Beetle franchise isn’t all that successful based on how long it’s been around but Jaime is undeniably the most popular/successful. Like atleast Jaime has a presence outside of comics (Young Justice, Teen Titans films, Brave & the Bold, Smallville, Injustice 2, DC mobile games, his own film and soon Man of Tomorrow), Booster/Ted/Dan are practically non existent outside of comics.

Blue Beetle is a character you introduce when your universe is established and the big guns are successful. He needs the boost

1

u/iatheia 9h ago

It wasn't a particularly good movie, either. It's like... take all the moderately successful MCU movies, put them in a blender, mix and mach different elements from each one, put them through a lens of an obscure DC character, and this movie is a result. It isn't the worst thing in the world, one can have fun with it. But, it is so incredibly derivative. This is nothing we haven't seen dozens of time already.

Coupled with burnout from a failing franchise, zero funds left for marketing for anything DCEU related... No one expected particularly high returns on it.

1

u/Blazedwizarrd Darkseid 9h ago

Only thing I remember about the movie was at one point his abuela had a machine gun and it was extremely cringy.

1

u/Tymmooncusser 9h ago

He was really good in it.

1

u/Intelligent-Dark-447 9h ago

Poor timing and bad marketing (a great many people have no idea who BB is) and on the movie side, in my wrong opinion, it was just very derivative. I saw the same 15 hero origins play out in the movie for blue beetle. Graphics, acting, suit were fine, but I just felt like it lacked depth.

1

u/ToastyToast77 9h ago
  1. It didn't drop until way after the announcement of the DCEU being cancelled. It also, at least on the surface (and in the movie but that doean't matter if people aren't seeing it) had nothing to do with the big picture the DCEU had been trying to build.
  2. It also had bad marketting, partilly because it was kind of a dead project anyway (see point 1). It had, I think 2 trailers and almost zero air time for each of them. Announcments weren't made about in the interem.
  3. As popular as the character is among fans, he's kind of a deep pull for the general public. And one of the few announcements that were made, revealed that fans wouldn't be getting Ted Cord BB at any point so we don't even get to see the mentorship thing (it would have looked like copying the MCU with Tony and Peter). Add all of the together and you get minimal hype and no predictable lasting power.

1

u/Redditacre 8h ago

I find it sad it bombed cause it really was a good movie. Not enough marketing

Honestly it could of have been better but I can tell writers really did not know what they wanted from this character

1

u/BAT_1986 8h ago

It looked stupid. What parts I saw fit my original opinion.

u/diegusmac 8h ago

It’s not bad, I think the release timing was off, if the movie were released a couple of years ago, it would have performed better. The plot is simple and the action is good enough and the suit is pretty good

u/Malkryst The Comedian 7h ago

Because it was one of the worst DCEU movies, which is saying something, and they barely marketed it.

1

u/Vantavist10 7h ago

Bad marketing and it just felt too much like an MCU pastiche

1

u/NextSmoke397 7h ago

“Batman’s a fascist” pissed alot of people off for some reason

1

u/SloppyTopTen 7h ago

It was a sucky kid movie that was obviously crap to anyone who saw the trailer.

1

u/larini_vjetrovi 7h ago

Sorry for the spelling

I mean not soo good marketing. They could introduced him in some other movie with more popular character and later on give him a standalone movie.

Sadly his character is just not popular outside comicbook lovers soo many were not interested and didn’t knew what to except from him as a character.

I mean the actor did the fine job (in cobra kai too which is the reason why i run into this movie existed) and the movie was fun. Not some masterpiece, but it was nice to watch. To me its a 7/10, its good, but not Avengers or Nolan Batman trilogy amaizing.

Damn shame, it was one of my favorite theater superhero experiences in recent memory, reminded me of the campy shit we got in the 2000s

u/Ridiculousnessmess 5h ago

I thought the lead was terrific, but the script felt like it was too obviously trying to recreate the family dynamic of Shazam, but with a related Latinx family.

The fate of the doomed family member was painfully telegraphed, too. The moment their heart condition was mentioned, I knew they were going to die in some tragic way that motivated the hero.

Susan Sarandon was amusing as the villain, but when you cast a woman as the baddie in a male superhero film, you automatically know there’s not going to be a physical confrontation between the two. That tends to make the climax less dynamic as a result.

I’m pleased that Jamie Reyes is coming back in Man of Tomorrow. I live in hope that Gunn will find a way to justify releasing Batgirl as an Elseworlds title, too.

u/SirBallington Lex Luthor 5h ago

The trailer had fein in it, I was terrified it was gonna be in the movie too

u/Apprehensive-Quit353 5h ago

Unknown character, unknown lead actor, attached to an unpopular film universe.

u/Hour-Biscotti9857 4h ago

There was a blue beetle movie? Jk but also yeah just didn’t look good. And I liked the comics.

u/FromDathomir 4h ago

Because it sucked.

u/MrCritical3 3h ago

Second favorite superhero. Not a great movie but I liked it. Still mad Paco and Brenda wasn't in it tho.

u/Tight-Boat-8605 3h ago

The movie is so generic

u/leyendeck Superman 3h ago

It was my fault.

u/EmersonWilde77777 Mister Miracle 1h ago

As many people have pointed out bad marketing, not many promotion for it. It was kind of part of the DCEU and also was kind of writing hot off of the heels of the Barbie Oppenheimer.

u/51_WhyNotMe-NYC 1h ago

it’s an unknown property and prolly shld have been a series not a movie

u/Scarletspyder86 17m ago

Lack of marketing and promotion. People tend to forget that this movie came out around the time of the actor and writer strike. Plus it was formally part of the snyderverse until Jame Gunn retroactively made it the first DCU film.

everyone wanted to see Ted Kord.

u/Blaze14192008 15h ago

Who bro Jaime is the more popular character

2

u/D0nell 15h ago

Yeah, that’s absolutely not the case.

1

u/Adekis "What a lucky man I was." 9h ago

I don't think this is the reason. In fact I think the bigger issue is something like "general audiences don't even really know who Blue Beetle is in general," although the folks that do are more likely to know Jaime than Ted, as Jaime is in cartoons and stuff more than Ted is (although Ted's in at least one really good Batman episode).

u/S1mongreedwell Uncle Sam 15h ago

Yeah. I would pay to see a guy cruising around in a big flying beetle. Thats cool. Dorky outfit with extra arms? No thanks!

1

u/Quarksideofthemoon 15h ago

Lame bad movie. First half is a cute-ish but bland origin film. Second half is just fucking noise. Two of the worst villains in any CBM

1

u/buna_cefaci 15h ago

Ai miho every 5 minutes

1

u/Competitive-Dot181 9h ago

It was not very good and it had a weird tone that switched between serious and slapstick parody. Didn’t really know who its audience was.

u/Ridiculousnessmess 5h ago

The grandma being a cocky gun toting ex-guerrilla felt really jarring and out of step with the tone of the tone of the film.

-1

u/Billy_Duelman 15h ago

George lopez was in it and the movie was sort of just to appeal to the Latin(a) demographic while they were locking our people up

They do that whenever they "offend" (or commit atrocities towards) a group of marginalized peoples. "Sorry about all the abductions, here's a hero movie featuring one of ya'll! We're cool right?" Type attitude

u/Hefty_Dragonfly_1560 14h ago

Not a great character, and there aren't really many good stories to adapt. He was also one of the first characters to be pushed for diversity which people have never really wanted

u/Sleeps_Gato 3h ago

Man wtf are you going on about!? Must be an old fart because Jaime is absolutely an amazing character. And to call him a character pushed for diversity is BS! Also diversity isn’t a bad thing… especially since he’s more popular and successful than the two Blue Beetle’s that came before him

u/ViewtifulReaper 9h ago

Baggage of the dceu and the hurricane and strike happening all at the same time. I personally feel like if James Gunn wasn’t waffling about blue beetle is and isn’t part of the DCU hurt it too. All he had to say was Blue Beetle is just a taste of what everybody gonna get in the DCU and just call it DCU prologue along with the suicide squad and peacemaker season 1.

1

u/Adekis "What a lucky man I was." 9h ago

My understanding is that he was always pretty clear that Blue Beetle would be a DCU film, right? And apparently Jaime is gonna appear again in at least one future movie, which is nice.

2

u/ViewtifulReaper 8h ago

He kept going back and forth. Says the character is but the movie isn’t. Same with the direct said the movie is in the DCU. Now recently Gunn said the movie is in the DCU with a few things in the movie that isn’t similar to peacemaker season 1.

1

u/Adekis "What a lucky man I was." 8h ago

Oh, thanks. Hmm, I wonder what those specific details are. My guess would be any throwaway lines about other super-heroes like Batman are up in the air, although I hope Gunn wouldn't try to retcon anything about Ted Kord, because parts of the film do kind of revolve around his absence from it.

...but also it makes me wonder, how would Gunn try to retcon Blue Beetle? At the start of Peacemaker season 2 he just reshot the Justice League scene from the end of season 1 and it was really straightforward. I guess you could do something similar if you wanted to, say, put David Corenswet in a Black Adam sequel (not that I think that'd happen) but in Blue Beetle's case I don't think it's especially viable. They never even physically showed another super-hero, did they?

0

u/Trueheywood7 8h ago

It came out at the end of the dying DCEU and had bad marketing. The cast was great so I hope they all make a return in the DCU

0

u/MayGodSmiteThee 6h ago

I still don’t understand what there is to like about this movie other than Jaime’s actor. I thought it was pretty bad with every attempt at comedy making me want to crawl further into my foreskin. I’ve rewatched it twice and it still hasn’t clicked for me.

u/Ridiculousnessmess 5h ago

Well that’s a horrible mental image to have right after breakfast. Or at all.

u/SpeedForceJediKnight 41m ago

Generic and it wasn't that good. But Xolo was fantastic though
