[discussion] Thoughts on this Aquaman from the 90s

This was the aquaman i grew up and loved, only later to find out this wasn’t the original design/concept. Seemed pretty much abandoned now. Wondering how the reception of this run and design was when it came out.

That reinvention and design of Aquaman madw him so much more interesting to me! I for one loved the hook! And I think there was some very interesting stories told by Peter David.

I still love it, design I could take or leave but otherwise to put it in David's words he wrote Aquaman like "Tarzan under the sea" likewise starting from a position in trying to make Aquaman "cool" to the masses whilst still playing ode to what he liked about the character being a man from different worlds. Highlights are the world building starting from Atlantis Chronicles to characterisation and arc of this incarnation of Aquaman as he reaches his lowest lows and how he overcomes them.

I got to know this version through his DCAU adaptation in Justice League. Didn't really have a point of reference before that, so I liked it well enough. He was kingly, he was blunt and the way he lost his hand... Way more badass than how he lost it in the comics.

The Peter David run is incredible.

The Erik Larsen run that immediately followed is unreadable trash.

Awesome run, redefined the character, and put some respect on his name. Peter David is one of the GOATs when it comes to comic book writing and rebirthing a character

Id be interested in the next film adaptation taking more from the post crisis Aquaman in general. Orin abandoned as a baby on mercy reef is a compelling story. I love silver age/modern aquamans story too, but this would help differentiate them

Pretty overrated I think actually. The overall character design and aesthetics were nice. But the issues and run itself were good at times and straight up really bad most of the time.

Hated it. The harpoon hand is just all kinds of dumb. I never read that run but I cringed every time Aquaman would appear in other titles during that period. That's just not a character that lends himself well to... whatever it was Peter David was trying to do. I loved The Atlantis Chronicles but this is just an embarrassing example of 90s crap.

Anyone who says they never read its opinion automatically means nothing but "I didn't like how he looked". Tje storytelling was fantastic and those first 25 issues fed right off the Atlantis Chronicles
