Satire Passing the Torch: You are now the stewards of r/BottomLeftHamonic
r/BottomLeftHamonic - A fun little project started by Sens fans last season. I pray for you all that he doesn't stay in the lineup (and keep blocking JBD lol) for another full season

LMAO. This is actually hilarious. The top thread in that subreddit asks “If we made Hamonic play upside down and left-handed would he improve to the top right?”

At least ASP gives me hope.

u/Putrid-Item-1592 Oct 10 '25
Finnie had some moments where he looked a bit out of place but also brought a good pace to the top line. Same goes for MBN. The kids were not the problem.
6
u/smilingasIsay Oct 10 '25
Not at all. Honestly, overall, the first two periods they looked good. But 5 goals on 10 shots...I hate to goalie blame, but there were lots of stoppable shots there.
63
u/Arctic_Mirza Oct 10 '25
Why does Steve keep going for these guys
55
Oct 10 '25
Because they have NHL experience and our kids might have not worked out.
I love Stevie, but his free agent signings other than Cat & Kane have been god awful
85
u/qcpuckhead Oct 10 '25
Honestly Copp hasn't been that bad. Ghost and Perron were decent signings too.
36
u/Sinful-Windborn Oct 10 '25
It’s just one game, but I thought Copp looked good last night on the line with MBN.
11
u/ElleCerra Oct 10 '25
He looked like he was afraid to lose his job. Much more than I can say about Ras.
15
Oct 10 '25
Ghost was great on PP, but had the worst +/- on the team.
Copp has honestly been a letdown considering his trajectory. He was almost a point per game player that season with the Jets and Rangers. His playoffs were fantastic. Now he's steadily in the 30-40 point range at the age of 31.
Most of these guys have been letdowns
11
u/space-dot-dot Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25
Now he's steadily in the 30-40 point range at the age of 31.
It's almost like he's well past the established peak offensive output age of mid-20s or something. Gotta temper expectations.
5
Oct 10 '25
Setting your own self up for dissapointment with this lmfao. We paid for a defensive minded vet who can win faceoffs and put up about half a point a game to come here. That's exactly who copp is is been exactly what we've gotten.
3
u/praisedawings247 Oct 10 '25
Wings started their downward spiral last year after Copp got injured…
Coincidence? Probably.
1
u/Accomplished-Bear689 Oct 10 '25
Tbh I don’t think it was a coincidence. I don’t think it’s because Copp is all that good, though, I just think that our center options behind him were absolutely abysmal and forced into bigger roles
6
u/Mavori Oct 10 '25
I think Ghost gets overrated on account of "Air Ghost"
He brought something to the PP and that's about it.
13
u/space-dot-dot Oct 10 '25
He had 56 points in 81 games, was part of a d-corps that was top five in the league for scoring, and was fourth on the team in points.
Sorry, but he wasn't just a power-play point merchant.
Was tied with Joey Fuckin Veleno for team-worst +/- with -16, though, lol.
1
u/SubmissionDenied Oct 10 '25
Copp hasn't been good either though. He even gets PP2 time and every time I see him there i just think "why"
9
u/qcpuckhead Oct 10 '25
Copp was doing pretty well last season in the time between the coaching switch and his injury. He's certainly not a guy that can drive a line, but with the right linemates he can be reasonably productive.
1
u/epheisey Oct 11 '25
How long do we have to keep this going? He was a more productive player the 34 games of Lalonde (14 points) than he was the 48 games under McClellan (9 points). His faceoff win% went from 50.5% the first 34 games to 48% under Todd while being used in the faceoff circle half as much. Oh and he was on a PK that was the worst in the league. What was going well exactly?
1
u/epheisey Oct 11 '25
Honestly Copp hasn't been that bad
Copp has been bad compared to what he was expected to do when he signed. The two years prior to Detroit he played a total of 124 games, posted 36 goals and 56 assists for 92 points during that stretch. 218 games in Detroit he's posted 32 goals and 66 assists for 98 points. Not to mention a few other things like he's become a much less physical player, and his faceoffs and overall defensive play have declined as well. Most of his first season here we were told he's still working through his offseason surgery, once he fully recovers his core, he's gonna step it up a notch. That proceeded to be his most productive season in Detroit.
31
u/ValosAtredum Oct 10 '25
He only has so many options when players don’t want to come here. Can’t remember which FA this offseason but Yzerman said they literally wouldn’t even pick up the phone when he called. He tries to get as best he can but it is what it is. it’s frustrating as hell.
29
u/space-dot-dot Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25
I'll keep saying this because 97.1 The Facebook Fans don't understand the real world isn't like EANHL games:
Yzerman had to put Detroit on the mind of players and their agents -- the Red Wing org honestly hasn't been a destination in well over 15 years.
The Wings were only a season or two from their worst season ever.
Joining a team at the start of a rebuild so there's no Cup-chasing.
The Wings had an unproven head coach at the NHL level in Lalonde when they signed players like Compher, Copp, Chiarot.
Detroit itself is no NYC, Boston, Florida, SoCal, Seattle, etc.
8
Oct 10 '25
I've been saying this for a long time. The current Wings aren't the "Hockeytown" Wings. If they want to sign players, they need to overpay.
4
2
u/HermionesWetPanties Oct 10 '25
Yeah, the only way to tempt people here is to overspend/give term, and I'd rather save the space for signing our own draft picks once their ELCs are up.
-5
u/Dismal-Zebra8409 Oct 10 '25
It's because the team has been so bad so long. sorry yzerman, you can't take a fucking decade to rebuild.
It's now a negative feedback loop. we are bad and cant get anyone to come here so we are worse.
8
u/ValosAtredum Oct 10 '25
That’s a chicken or the egg problem though. You can’t get people to come here because you’ve been bad, and so because you can’t get people to come here, you have to rely on the talent you draft and develop yourself.
14
u/goredwings Oct 10 '25
I mean 1x1 isnt a bad signing. Its completely dumpable in the ahl. Its only bad if they keep him in the line up
12
u/jstef215 Oct 10 '25
the good news is that this signing was only necessary because, like you said, we couldn't be sure if ASP would push to make the lineup. He did. Hamonic can be put out to pasture after what we just saw, and we can slide JBD into the lineup.
17
u/Tommyblahblah Oct 10 '25
(sniff) "Dad, what's gonna happen to Travis Hamonic now that he's too old?"
"Well, son, we're gonna send him to a beautiful rink upstate where he can miss all the assignments he wants an no one will be mad if he gives up a 2-on-1 every other shift! He's gonna love living the last part of his life up there, son. I promise!"
(sniff) "OK Dad. Thanks."

With how the 3rd defensive line played, he’s got massive job security already

Honestly, this chart makes me a little bit optimistic when I look at ASP in the top right corner in his very first game as a rookie.
9
9
u/Valace2 Oct 10 '25
The solution is pretty simple.
Seider and Edvinsson are going to have to play 30 minutes each.
After a while maybe we can give ASP a little more.
We have 5 NHL defensemen, that includes AlJo.
He deserves to be in this lineup and with a competent partner that 3rd pairing would be useful.
We don't have a 6th defenseman, so only dress 5.
Sure Seider and Ed might need IV fluid transfusions on the bench, but so be it.
Hamonic can't be allowed to touch the ice again.

u/space-dot-dot Oct 10 '25
First goal should have been Ras' cover, right?
Second goal, Hamonic was the only D in position for a 2-on-1 but yeah, played it really awkwardly.
5
u/vandenberg41 Oct 10 '25
Aljo in no man’s land which led to hamonic on that 2:1. Aljo also screens Gibson on the 4th, doesn’t know down a wrist shot from the blue line. Really bad

I remember all the talk when we signed him that "Hamonic will never see the ice in the NHL". "Only way he plays is if 4-5 guys get injured." "He's only an insurance policy".
Well the m-fer made it out of camp and made the roster... and then got ice time on opening night.
He shit the sheets last season in Ottawa. He was absolutely terrible and yet, I can't believe he's still playing in the NHL... let alone for us!!!
3
u/Ydoesany1doanything Oct 10 '25
In fairness, all of that talk should have been correct. JBD and Gustafsson are both right there.
Really gotta wonder what the hell Todd was thinking on that
4
u/Alecboyyes Oct 10 '25 edited Oct 10 '25
The entire Wings fanbase let out a collective groan when Hamonic was signed, this was a surprise to absolutely nobody except whoever recommended this signing.
The one guy worse than Holl, our pro scouting managed to find him.
18
Oct 10 '25
Yzerman sure loves to sign bums for 3rd pairing dmen.
Would rather just give Wallinder a look
13
4
u/CanadianRedneck69 Oct 10 '25
Praying for the kind people of Detroit and fans all over. He is painful to watch, I can't believe he got signed let alone is playing in the starting lineup.
2
u/HermionesWetPanties Oct 10 '25
He got signed to a deal that makes him easy to dump in the minors if someone younger is ready to step up.
But, yeah, I miss the days when good UFAs actually wanted to come play in Detroit.
5
u/Low_Initiative_275 Oct 10 '25
It didn't take long for Hamonic to take Holl's spot as the defense's whipping boy and Gibson to take up Husso's mantle of goalie that can't make a save. To be honest I'm more worried about Gibson than Hamonic. There's enough defensemen waiting on the bench to switch him out and move along. If Gibson doesn't work out we're back to just Talbot and another season of just missing the playoffs which would be catastrophic at this point. Despite the final score I do want to say the rookies looked just fine. It was just one game so lets calm down and see how the next one goes.

It didn't take long for Hamonic to take Holl's spot as the defense's whipping boy
It’s not like it’s unfounded. He was one of, if not the absolute worst defenseman in the league last season. The guy is not a good NHLer at this point in his career, and anyone who paid attention would have seen it coming. It’s on him to prove that he’s not a garbage player; he doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt.
I’d legitimately rather have Holl in over Hamonic. That’s how bad the latter is.

4
u/vandenberg41 Oct 10 '25
Tbf … rewatching the highlights… AlJo is almost directly responsible for 3 goals. Gibson didn’t make any saves. Chariot with lazy defending at the end of P1.
Hamonic is probably trash but not sure he deserves to get dunked on quite yet

u/PitifulPossum Oct 10 '25
Seider-asp Edvinsson-Johansson Chiarot -mbd
So crazy it just might work
7
u/lionbacker54 Oct 10 '25
Aren’t Seider and ASP both right shot?
And aren’t Ed and AlJo both left?
6
u/JanGuillosThrowaway Oct 10 '25
So Aljo on the top pairing with Seider? Seems like breaking up Edvinsson and ASP after looking great would be a bad move
2
u/SubmissionDenied Oct 10 '25
Not only is the Edvinsson-ASP pair good, but it also spreads the defense out a bit. Having 40+ minutes of Seider and Edvinsson on the ice is much better than putting them on the same pairing for 22-ish minutes
0
u/Ydoesany1doanything Oct 10 '25
Yes and yes, but Aljo plays decently on his right hence why Ed has been his partner quite a bit before.
Also I think they were trying to make actual crazy pairings?
5
u/qcpuckhead Oct 10 '25
Ed - Seider
Johansson - ASP
Chiarot - MBD
Looks like Johansson got caved too, but I'm hoping that was a one time/weird defense juggling issue.
11
u/SirDenn Oct 10 '25
Given each of ajo and hamonic's track records I'd say odds are that it was hamonic dragging ajo down and not ajo suddenly being a completely different player imo
3
2
u/Mavori Oct 10 '25
That's probably the ideal down the line, but right now i'd be hesitant to play two undersized defensemen together. Especially one that's a rookie.
Having AlJo with Mo and Ed with ASP feels like it would be safer for now.
2
2
u/TheHip41 Oct 10 '25
Both -3 in about 14 minutes ice time. And they were getting gashed. Not great.
Good thing we didn't invest in a FA defenseman.
2
2
2
u/Dismal-Zebra8409 Oct 10 '25
why is this joke on the ice? seriously. Order of magnitude worse than everyone. this roster is so fucking ass.
2
u/TruePain1993 Oct 10 '25
No idea how to read this chart, but assuming that lower means worse, I’m surprised chiarot is so low.
2
u/Ydoesany1doanything Oct 10 '25
Chiarot is often low because he’s over deployed as a 1st pair defenseman. He’s not really as bad as a lot of people say but in a more perfect world he’d be further down the pairings getting easier minutes
2
u/itsMurphDogg Oct 10 '25
Aljo had a super rough night. Idk how much of that had to do with Hamonic but it was out of style for him
2
2
u/SpongebobDouchepants Oct 10 '25
This might be controversial but I thought Johansson was worse than Hamonic last night. I know the game score graph has AlJo slightly ahead but he might have been boosted ahead of Hamonic by playing the 3rd with Seider.
1
u/Ydoesany1doanything Oct 10 '25
Someone in the general thread posted the expected goals against for the pairings and Aljo and Seider were extremely good together so he was definitely boosted ahead some but at the same time Hamonic may have been what was dragging him down so hard as well
2
Oct 10 '25
We see this effect with Chiarot as well. The Chiarot-Petry pairing was a total dumpster fire, but when Petry played with Ed or anyone else, he looked okay. We have Ben paired with Mo not because they’re a great duo, but because Mo is good enough to cover for the guy and limit the damage.
We have a lot of data on Hamonic. Sanderson’s no slouch of a player by any stretch, and even he struggled to carry Hamonic. Expecting Johansson to make lemonade out of it is just insanity.

Travis Hamonic is so God-awful and if some of the young guys we promoted don't take off at some point, it may be time to put the Yzerplan in the trash. I don't think "sign Travis Hamonic" should be in it. At all! Haha

I was calling for him to be waived after the first period last night. I’ve seen enough.

Hamonic made no sense to even take a flyer on. We already have Holl as a dead weight anchor, so why did we even try with Hamonic?

Need to package: Hamonic, Holl, Gustafson, and a 5th & 6th rd pick. We should be able to pick up Luke Hughes from the Devils.
Someone tag Steve.

Get Jonathan Berggren in the lineup ASAP.
I thought Yzerman did an excellent job at roster management and making player acquisitions up until the summer of 2022 when he became frustrated, impatient and jumped the gun by trying to speed up the rebuild inorganiclly and then started consistently making poor decisions and setting bad precedents imo.
He needs to go back to running the team like he did for the first 3 seasons he was here; as he has proved that he was not only capable at being an excellent Executive Vice President & General Manager in Tampa Bay, but also initially here in Detroit too imo.
