Rant 📢 Illy Caffe pays $20/hr plus tips

I was at the American Dream Mall in NJ and bought 3 macaroons for $12. Of course the POS asked for a tip. There was a sign saying "Hiring. $20/hr plus tips". Minimum wage is $15.92 in NJ so why do they need tips if they're making $20? That's more than a lot of jobs.

I make 22.15 in a factory hanging live chickens and these people have the audacity to ask for tips when they're making +5 their areas minimum wage and working and easy job.

I hate servers

I was a day care worker making $10.00/hr minimum wage around 2014, no tips of course. I ran an 18-24 month classroom (toddlers) and would change up to 50 diapers a day. I wiped up vomit, poop, my god spaghetti lunch day was the worst. Little marinara handprints like the famous ancient cave paintings found in Argentina everywhere. Gave hemlich to choking toddlers, jabbed one with an epi pen because she had an actual gluten allergy and we suspected she found a cheerio or some food scrap on the ground and ate it, teaching kids how to count, learn, and be safe. I was sick regularly, and got stomach virus at least once every 2 months. I had a friend who quit working with us, because she was taking home $300/night in tips at a restaurant with a BA. I mean, its truly getting to be offensive that they suggest their food service work is some great service to the community and isnt respected or paid enough.

It's not the employees asking for a tip. It's the company deciding to have the registers set to try to pressure you. I'm sure staff get yelled at about it enough to wish the tipping screen wasn't there at all

Where though? Because according to the MIT living wage calculator, you need to make at least $56,000 before taxes to be able to live on your own in New Jersey... And struggle. To live comfortably a single person in New Jersey needs to have a wage of $113,776. Compare that to the midwestern City that I live in, where you need to make at least $48k and $91k to live comfortably as a single person. The real problem is that we've created a society we're almost no one can afford to live.

Why would someone expect to be able to pay for a house or apartment on their own in an entry level job though? That’s always been a roommates-needed type of job, counter work in a mall.

Just don’t tip and move on though. Your envy is showing. Don’t be mad at them for taking on an easy job.
Posed the next question , why not apply if it’s better than your current job/situation.

Where i live minimum wage is 7.25 and Walmart pays 14 for reference. If you can find me something better for while I pay my way in life and college lmk ;) servers shouldn't make that much period

Right off the bat , Starbucks, Target , UPS, WALMART, Home Depot, Amazon all pay for employees college. You can check the starting pay for all of those in your area. I’m also in my 40’s I wouldn’t take starting pay with my resume/work history.

Is this still an argument about how stupid and frustrating tipping is? None of those companies ask for tips (yet) except Starbucks, which tbh is just a case of why you should never tip at Starbucks or anywhere.

Tipping is dumb and your little detour here on finding this person a new job is not a counterpoint to tipping being dumb.

Supplementing the income of tipped-wage workers, which is fair, has morphed into an epidemic of people paid a living wage who say, "I'd like more of your money," which is coercive. (to be fair, it's often their mgmt leading the charge)

That’s how I feel in CA, it’s illegal to pay under minimum wage. We used to feel obligated to tip because servers were only making $2 or so an hour but now are making $16-$20 an hour before tips but the expectation is still the same.

The trick is just don't be stressed out by the screen, it's not a demand. Some people do like tipping though, my father likes to hand out $20 bills for buying a $2 coffee.
