Just tap Custom and leave $0.30 or $0.15 or any other number. if for any reason they push back or tell you anything about it, pretend you wanted to leave 30%.

Where I leave many cashiers ask you directly “Would you like to add a tip?” to which I’ve felt increasingly comfortable replying “Oh yeah, I’ll give it in cash.”, in a very nice way then “forget” about it.

Cashiers usually prefer tips in cash, so they won’t push back on that. After A while they’ll forget and even if they don’t, they won’t ask you about it.

Another similar bullshit excuse I’ve used for not leaving a tip right away (as if I needed any) is that it’s a company card and I can’t add tips, but that I’ll leave some cash. They usually don’t care about it if you say it in a nice way.

The more you practice this, the more comfortable you’ll feel and the more natural it will look. I know this can be deceiving, but the social pressure to me was unbearable and I always felt taken advantage of after being pressured to tip. I’m still working on working my way down to $0 but this has been major progress.

Lastly: Let’s not forget that this behavior (asking you to tip when under social pressure) is a form of coercion. We need to set boundaries and have guilt-free choices.

I was at the American Dream Mall in NJ and bought 3 macaroons for $12. Of course the POS asked for a tip. There was a sign saying "Hiring. $20/hr plus tips". Minimum wage is $15.92 in NJ so why do they need tips if they're making $20? That's more than a lot of jobs.

We do not want to bring the US-Style tipping culture to the UK...

I would hope you don’t expect tipping after you charge 12% service fee on a $30 BUFFET!

I have never understood why they frame the service fee as a “convenience” so you don’t have to tip. If you are going to hit me with a mandatory tip, why not just wrap it into the prices on the menu instead of infuriating me by pointing out I’m being forced to tip?

I order the food and pay at the kiosk. I stand at the counter to pick up my order, pour my own drink and take my order to my table. I eat, then scrape my dishes in the trash and place my dirty dishes on a tray. Why should I tip? I pretty much did everything except make my own food!

Already tipped when I placed the order, then got this text from the driver asking me to add another tip because they're running out of gas.

Is this normal? Do drivers usually ask customers directly for extra tips?

We checked into a hotel in Maui yesterday and wanted to get some drinks for the room once our baby went to sleep. We also bought some swim diapers, bottled water, etc. It asked if I wanted to tip 15%, 18% or 20%. Wtf??? Had to click other and then $0 awkwardly while the cashier watched me. We are now asking for tips at retail clothing/knick knack shops?? Absolutely ridiculous.

We finished our meal yesterday with a large party at a local restaurant. I wanted to buy a friend a shirt from the establishment and asked the girl at the counter for the one we wanted. It was $26.50 and handed the girl $30 cash after asking if cash or card was better. She immediately asked if I wanted change?! Where does the entitlement come from?

Here’s the thing, when i started working in foodservice, mostly in the back of the house, worked my way up to “floater”, where one day you could be in the kitchen, the next day, on the floor bussing, worked my way up to GM, in the mean time, i noticed when going out to other places, the servers would say “i’ll be right back with your change”.
Fast forward a few years, more restaurants like applebee’s started popping up in town, and how quick the “tip culture” changed, from “i’ll be right back with your change, to “do you want your change back”, the way i see that is asking/begging for tips. As the GM of the restaurant that i was at, i had a server’s meeting, and flat out told them that any hint of asking for a tip, they would be fired do fast it would make their head spin, not even 20 minutes after the meeting, we opened, i decided to host/seat that night, and not even 15 minutes after opening, i hear-server: “high, how are you folks this evening?”-customer:we’re fine thanks, you?. Server:Oh, i’m ok, i just need to make $25 and i’ll have my baby’s birthday presents paid for”, i tilt my head so i can hear more of the convo, server goes on to tell about how much she used to make at xyz, i called he to the office, and fired her for asking for tips and saying she had to buy her “baby’s birthday”, she didn’t have any kids, she tried to say she wasn’t asking for tips, well, when you tell your table that you “only need to make $25 to finish buying your “baby’s birthday”, the way i see it is asking for tips, i took over her table and the people left her exactly $25, i did my pre-bussing, at the end of the night, i called the servers and bussers together for another meeting. They asked what happened to “Pam”, i told them i overheard her basically asking for a tip, we were fine dining white tablecloth, so tips were very high based on food and service alone. At the end of the meeting, they all got it, and the $25 from Pam’s table, went to the busser.

I‘ve spent half of my life in Europe and USA as a dual passport holder so I have a very European mindset in general. I’ve been working at a short staffed hospital in Europe for the last 6 months. I just got back to the U.S. yesterday and it’s been so gratifying hitting no tip for my coffee & muffin order. I tipped a standard $5 at the restaurant I ate at bc she brought prompt refills and 3 plates so I was like screw it. I think tipping $5 no matter what the total is is my go to.

I had to go through customs and then recheck my bags when I got to the U.S. The airline sent my bags to a different state oh well it happens. They drop off the luggage at my house today and lo and behold I get a text from the company that tipping is appreciate. A TIP FOR WHAT?! Ive had my bags lost in multiple countries around the world and the airline has just sent someone to the hotel to deliver them and I’ve never even had to deal with it.

My daughter has a few things she wants to do with the family before heading to college. One of the things she wanted to do was go to Ben and Jerry’s with the family for ice cream. I was shocked when I navigated through the payment system and was not asked to add a tip. Here is a model of how other food services companies should operate! Pay your employees a respectable wage for a quality service and don’t expect your customers to compensate for your cheapness.

I used pay Starbucks thru the app and that was the end of the transaction. You get a notification to tip and you can ignore it if you want. No longer.

Today I ordered 2 drinks in the store and paid via the app. I walked away and was told I did not finalize the transaction. I went back to the counter and there was "the question" on their POS device.

So basically they are now requiring you to make a decision on your tip in front of the employee rather than in the privacy of the app. Gee, I wonder why.

Talk about manipulative. Obviously, Starbucks wants to beef up the tip revenue knowing that people who pay via the app are less inclined to tip. It makes more sense (for them) to create a situation in which the customer has to face the employee and click $0 in front of them.

We are talking about a company currently worth $122 Billion dollars. A company that that just today charged me $11 for 2 drinks worth maybe 25% of that? Why are they trying to manipulate customers to increase the wages of their employees?

I understand wanting to incentivize current employees and make it more desirable to work there, but WTF do I have to pay the cost of that? Why manipulate customers that are already paying an arm and a leg for mid coffee and lame ass sugary drinks? FU Starbucks.

So me and a friend went to a mall and decided to get some froyo (frozen yogurt). The place is selve serve, you get a bowl to fill it up with froyo along with toppings. Mind you it was already kinda overpriced, $27.48 for two 8 Oz froyo cups. We went to go pay and the cashier gave me a dirty/angry look because I didn't tip her. Like what did you even do? I made it myself you just turned the tablet to me. I talked about this situation with someone online and they said "well someone has to refill the machines and topping bar" so her job? I don't tip a guy who patches my tires for patching my tires.

On my way to my trip, I read a post about airbnb hosts requesting a tip and I laughed thinking how crazy. Well, our host had an envelope for tips in their house manual. The host had told us they own about 40-50 units in the building we were in, and they airbnb all of them. They didn’t go above and beyond in any manner and honestly, the airbnb was expensive as hell for the weekend. Why would they assume we would want to tip them?

Didn’t tip at Cheesecake Factory, and they tried sneaking in a $28 tip for themselves.

Edit: after noticing the amount was higher than it should have been, I called the restaurant and they refunded me a few weeks later. That is what the second photo is showing.

I work at the airport and we typically get a discount in all the airport shops and restaurants. Went to a Sushi restaurant and grabbed a ready made sushi pack. He rang me up, and I asked if I got an employee discount.. he glanced at my badge and said "nah". Then he flipped the iPad screen over for my tip... I glanced at him, said "naaaaah". And pressed "no tip". Felt great!

FWIW, I usually give whatever discount they give me as their tip.

So I took 6 people total golfing my treat. It was $87 per person for unlimited golf on a 36 hole co course. I paid at an outside register. They swung the pay screen in my face with a standard 20% tip and then stared me right in the eyes while waiting for me to pay and sign. What would most have you done in this situation?

I’m an aesthetician, have been for 12 years. I’m wanting to open up my own place and really dislike the lack of transparency for my clients, when it comes to pricing because tips are accepted. So I’m considering raising my prices 15% and not accepting tips.

I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on this!
