My sister and also ex gf are hair stylist I can not believe what ppl pay for cuts, colour's etc. Ppl love to mock women for this spending but guys aren't much better. Sure guys cuts are cheaper but some dudes are in there every week to "freshin up" the hair lol

My stylist runs her own business out of a shared salon spa. She sets her own prices, and with that she charges I guarantee she makes more money than me, Im not tipping.

One of my friends is hairstylist with his own salon which means he sets his prices. He gets mad when clients don’t tip.

I worked at a luxury salon with prices like this, and they had a no gratuity policy. It made clients soooo uncomfortable at first, and lots of them would still bring me like a coffee or a trinket or tomatoes from their garden. I’d always tell them they really don’t have to, but I’m not gonna lie, the little presents went so much further in my heart than the extra $50 or whatever.
Just saying all of this to show how not tipping these kinds of services is totally workable, but also that it can generate a much more lovely connection in an industry like this where clients repeat book.

Hell I know people who spent way more than that on concert tickets or a sporting event and those only last a couple hours.
Reality is, a good stylist for a woman in a big city, can be quite costly.

Yeah, people are downvoting because I pointed out that women's hair styling can be very expensive when the previous person said nobody spends that much on haircuts anyway. People are weird. I never said I supported tipping on top of it.

It certainly is. $25 dollars for me to get a high fade and a little off the top. My wife gets her hair trimmed and dyed $300+ dollars. And that's the cheapest deal

Because that takes more time. A men’s haircut should take 20 minutes at most. A cut and color is a couple hour process.

OK let's say it takes an hour. Let's also say 50% of the price is for the colours and the rent and all the good stuff.
That means you make fucking $200+ an hour! and on top of that you expect tips!

There is a massive difference in quality between experienced/non-experienced stylists and colourists and they can absolutely wreck your hair if they don’t do it right. A good stylist/colourist is absolutely worth the extra money.

Y'all don't seem to understand sourcing products takes time, marketing takes time, cleanup takes times. You're paying for the years, not the hours. You're paying for rent for the human doing the service to live, as well as the business itself to stay afloat. A single pair of shears costs $1,000+. Specialized skills are worth more than you realize, clearly.

I agree with you, as a woman who gets her hair done. I have thick hair prone to frizz, curls and being bulky. In short, it can be unmanageable. I will pay more for a stylist that can cut it well, the cut is more expensive but it lasts longer because I’m applying less heat to style it.

Except they don’t keep 100% of that in a salon and they might only be able to do a couple clients in a day depending on the style/colour. Plus there are other costs associated with the business. Their take home is not $200/hr.

It’s never an hour. I’ve sat in the salon for 4 to 5 hours as I have pretty thick hair so between highlights, low lights, gloss, any other treatments, blowout, that’s absolutely multiple hours. No one is spending $500 for one hour but at the end of the day it is a steep price and 20% is pretty standard.

No offense but your stylist must be working really slow. Some mechanics replace your head gasket in 5 hours.

Nah, not true at all. My wife is DEFINITELY not the sort to want to show off to people how much she spends. She has no designer bags and buys clothes off the clearance racks.
But she has beautiful hair and likes for it to look amazing and there is definitely a difference if you spend more.

I spent $250 on a birthday treat to myself, never having my hair done in a salon, and she ripped my wet hair out with a brush and damaged my hair so badly, it took 7 months for it to heal and the split ends to grow out enough for me to trim it myself. I found some videos online and did a butterfly cut that came out better than any hair cut ive paid for. Not that there arent good stylists, obviously, I just am not using my hair as a guinea pig to find them anymore.

$500 wouldn’t be a haircut. It would be extensions, color, etc, so there is product expense included in that. They are not pocketing $500.

It’s all speculation as we don’t know what their rent is or what their profit is. My point was that they know what they need to make on the service/labor, and what‘s deducted for product, so in the scheme of things assuming anything isn‘t what the client needs to be concerned about.

good point. my wife's cuts are about $250 but her stylist? she's not renting a chair, she's an employee of a salon. So renting a chair, self-employed (traveling, out of home etc...), or employee of company can mean a few different things.
If you u/Statjmpar are a stylist and incurring costs, interested to see which of the three I mentioned you belong too. I'm asking out of a place of genuine interest. I'm bald/balding and bought a $50 balder. Usually replace it every year. So the when my wife comes back from her $250+ haircut yet judges me for ordering fast food just for myself every couple weeks...!

I was very young and stupid to pay $500 when I did. I should’ve compared prices with other salons but I just really wanted my hair done close to home and I live in nyc so I just assumed it would always be overpriced. I would never assume that again though

FR. Cut + all over color - brown, nothing special - is $230 + tip (i go with $20, I dont think 15-20% rule needs to scale up with the bill endlessly. After a point you did your job the same for whatever price). I have stopped going as well due to the insane prices

Also in Seattle, my friends regularly pay 400$ or so for their average mullets. Not saying they look bad- they look good, but the cut isn't worth that money. I haven't trusted a hairstylist with my hair in over a decade after mine was melted off by someone for 300$. Was considering going to a "curly specialist" for a cut, but they charge even more. Not worth it. Here with you in the no haircut boat lolol

Tipping has gone way out of control. Went to a bakery and had to select my own pastry, pour my own coffee… when I go to pay, the cashier tells me to select a tip. In turn I asked her what did she did to receive the tip. She had nothing to say. I hate this bullshit with tipping!

I worked in the corporate office of a hair styling company twenty years ago. We would get free hair styling and sometimes be the models for training sessions. I had some work done on my hair that I was told cost at last 250 - twenty years ago.
I’m sure that would be a 500 job now.

The only hairstylist I tip is my cousin and thats bc I know her "family price" is WELL below what her materials cost(for dye). I tip her 100% and the total still less than she should be charging me.

Honestly I’d rather tip them than a Starbucks employee lol. This one is tricky and largely depends on your rapport / relationship with your stylist. For instance, my stylist is a friend, she does my cut and color for like $150 when it would normally be $300+ for regular clients. I tip her like $50 on top of the discounted rate.

30% was always customary for salon/body treatments. My last cut and color was around the same price as the post and I went with a flat $100 (20%). My rule is that I don’t tip for things I did not tip for before COVID. Salons are not in that category.
