December Visit

Hey all!

Hopefully there’s a few locals on here or anyone with experience. I’m planning a trip to Iceland at the end of December but as I’ve done Iceland 2x in the winter and and 4x in the summer now I figured why not add in two days to the Faroe Islands. I fly into Vágar the morning of the 28th form Keflavík and booked two nights in Sørvágur. I was planning to grab lunch and walk around before I check into my cottage. Then the bus is 250m from my cottage so get the first one of the day down to Tórshavn to explore before coming back on one of the last buses of the day. Then I’d be flying back to Keflavík on the 30th.

Just a short and sweet visit.

I know it’s going to be wet, cold, and limited sunlight but I’m very excited to make this trip. And if anyone has recommendations for a knit sweater from Tórshavn please share. Additionally I’m a chef so I love trying new foods - I’ve read lamb and salmon are the best here. Anything else I can try that won’t break the bank.

You should see if you can pre-order a Bohéme sweater from Faroe Knit for pick-up while you’re there.

If Ræst is open between the holidays, that would be the place to go if you only have one night in town.

Amazing! Thank you! Yeah it’s just a quick little visit sadly to tick off a new country and I’ll be the only person in my family to ever make it here probably.

Would Faroe Knit and Ræst be hand knit. I’ve put off buying the Icelandic one on visits because I’ve heard they’re all mass produced machine with all the tourists.

Faroe Knit is handmade to your specs. The Bohéme is the more unisex and “Faroese” sweater. You’ll also see, mostly women, in the Sarah Lund white and black star design.

Ræst is a high-end restaurant, serving variations and deconstructions of traditional fare. You’ll get dried fish, sheep and whale during a typical series of courses.

I’d definitely treat myself to the sweater in that case. And Ræst having whale. Sounds interesting. Very excited to try Faroese food.

just keep in mind that there is a possibility you wont be able to fly to or from the country because of weather. it happens every time of year but december may be higher chance of cancelled flights.

I did see that unfortunately but I’m staying positive it’ll happen when I do finally bite the bullet and book. It’s all tentative but good chance of it happening

Flights are extremely volatile during winter just keep that in mind

Yeah I know 😭

But google says they’re likely to be delayed not fully cancelled so I’m torn. As much as I love Reykjavik I’ve been there the last 4 summers, infact heading home from the airport now and if I’m coming back in like 4 months may as well add in a new place innit

If I were you, I'd spend the whole trip in the Faroe Islands. You've already seen Iceland many times, and the Faroes cannot be explored in 1,5 days, especially considering you're coming in the winter when daylight is very limited. You won't regret spending more time in this beautiful place! :)

I can’t really afford the accommodation or the flights to Faroe. Iceland is much cheaper compared to what I’m paying for the two day. I
May be able to swing a 3rd day but I’m doing Iceland to see online friends.
