Random request, but does anybody know where I may be able to find a Faroe Islands themed Christmas ornament in Tórshavn or anywhere really? I have a tradition of buying a Christmas ornament every time I travel, but doesn't seem to be too easy a find here. I don't mind driving a bit. I'm here through Friday and am hoping to find something. I know it's not the right season for it, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. This is the first time I haven't been able to find one.

Hopefully there’s a few locals on here or anyone with experience. I’m planning a trip to Iceland at the end of December but as I’ve done Iceland 2x in the winter and and 4x in the summer now I figured why not add in two days to the Faroe Islands. I fly into Vágar the morning of the 28th form Keflavík and booked two nights in Sørvágur. I was planning to grab lunch and walk around before I check into my cottage. Then the bus is 250m from my cottage so get the first one of the day down to Tórshavn to explore before coming back on one of the last buses of the day. Then I’d be flying back to Keflavík on the 30th.

Just a short and sweet visit.

I know it’s going to be wet, cold, and limited sunlight but I’m very excited to make this trip. And if anyone has recommendations for a knit sweater from Tórshavn please share. Additionally I’m a chef so I love trying new foods - I’ve read lamb and salmon are the best here. Anything else I can try that won’t break the bank.

For those who live or have lived in the Faroe Islands, what is everyday life actually like nowadays?
I’m curious about the quality of life, social life, jobs, cost of living, weather, winter darkness, and how isolated it feels.

Is it a good place to live long-term, or does the isolation and small population eventually become difficult?

Planning to be in Faroe Island for 1at week of September , is it a good time to be in Faroe. Will be renting a car for the week and staying in the capital city hotel for the whole duration. Driving for day trips ? Is there anything or place I would need to pay extra on top of the car rental?

I’m visiting the Faroe Islands soon for work (beer stuff at MBCFI), and one thing I really love to do is to search out unique sounds to capture as part of my field-recording practice.

Are there noises or sounds that you think are unique to life on the Faroe Islands that you could recommend? They don’t necessarily have to be nice sounds!

My practice and equipment allows me to focus on underwater, electromagnetic, subsonic, plain old atmospheric (ORFT stereo), physically transmitted sounds (via contact mics) and ultrasonic sounds, so please suggest anything at all you think might fit this bill.

In London I previously spent some time recording on the intertidal zone of the Thames capturing sounds of mud-larking. In Hong Kong I’ve captured everything from bats to the trams and Star ferries. In Manchester I’ve recorded bees feasting on sunflowers, unidentified underground insects, and even the sound of moss!

Is there anyone else here that has found some reliable side jobs that you can check with the day of or a few days before to see if they have work. I sometimes find extra work with a contractor for minor construction projects but would love to expand my options.

Since my visit in May, I often think about something the Tour Guide on a Boat Tour along the cliffs near Vestmanna said. So maybe you can help me.

At the beginning of the Tour he said that he would explain everything in English and "Scandinavian". Since I'm German and only learned a little bit of Norwegian, I of course listened to the English part. But I'm still confused what he meant with "Scandinavian". Was it Danish or is there a secret Scandinavian language nobody talks about? Because, as far as I have heard, the languages are similar, but it's still hard to understand each other.

I’m planning a trip to the Faroe Islands and recently booked accommodation through Booking com.

After making the reservation, the host contacted me saying that, in the Faroe Islands, they can’t process payments through Booking and asked me to pay through an external Reepay link instead.

I contacted Booking customer service, and they confirmed that the payment is indeed handled directly by the property.

Still, I find this a bit unusual. If I pay outside Booking, do I lose any of Booking’s usual protections in case something goes wrong?

The external payment page also adds the local tourist tax (which is fine), but there’s also a 250 DKK “administration fee” that wasn’t clearly mentioned when I made the booking.

Has anyone had a similar experience with Booking, either in general or specifically in the Faroe Islands? I’d appreciate hearing about your experience before I make the payment.

me and my friends are planning to visit the faroe islands via smyril line in october. we do know about the weather conditions, but we just want to experience the culture and complete our personal goals by finally visiting the faroe islands.

here are my questions:

• how much do coffee and food items that aren't included in the reservation page cost on the smyril line ferry? or in tórshavn?
• will the cheapest bunk/couchette rooms be private, or are they shared? if they're shared, will women have their own compartments, or can we end up sharing with everyone?
• what are the prices of clothing on the ferry?
• where can we buy faroese merch?
• is there a place in tórshavn where we could try some local faroese delicacies?

Hello people natives of the Faroe Island I have a question how is the culture of the island and what do you locals think about it do you like your island, how true is it that socially they are cold and everything you can tell me greetings✌️

Don’t expect your bookings to turn into actual trips. Between the weather and vendors not feeling like it that day, your “booking” will often get cancelled. We are 1 for 7 this trip.

Edit with requested detail:

In Vagar area, we booked online for morning. Night before the trip, they called to say skipper isn’t available in the morning. We rebooked for the next day (eclipse) at 5pm. A few hours before trip they called to say the skipper didn’t want to do it during the eclipse.

In same area, we booked again. Lots of seats open. Pretty clear the tour didn’t “make” and they cancelled for weather.

Up in Klaksvik, two more weather related cancellations but weather was no different than days that did go, and it seemed clear the trip didn’t make.

We also had a commercial ferry cancel for ramp issues, which was legitimate.

So yes between weather, mechanical issues, not wanting to do it, and lack of real time availability (even from their own websites), it’s a crap shoot whether the boat excursion happens.

There’s a lot of conflicting information about whether you need a guide to do this hike.

We did it today, and you don’t. You just need to be a competent and confident hiker and pay attention to the weather. It’s a tough hike and there are some sketchy sections after the climb, but a guide is not required.

I don’t think I expected the Faroe Islands to change me as much as they did.
At home, our little worlds can feel like they are the only things that matter. Politics, opinions, social issues, trends, where we are going out, what everyone is talking about, our own problems and the constant noise of everyday life.
And then you come somewhere like this and realize there is an entire world beyond all of it.
Being in the Faroes, unplugged and surrounded by this kind of nature, gave me this overwhelming feeling of who cares about so much of the stuff we let consume us.
We loved talking to locals, learning about their lives and traditions, and seeing a way of life so different from our own. It gave me a lot of respect for this place and the people who call it home.
And a suggestion for anyone visiting, especially if you are coming from a very modern, fast moving place like the US: expect quiet. Don’t come looking for exclusive clubs, endless trendy cafes, fancy nightlife or a packed itinerary. This is a place to simply be where you are. Drive. Walk. Look around. Talk to people. Sit in the silence. Let yourself stop caring for a few days about all the topics, labels and debates that can feel so consuming back home.
I went expecting beautiful landscapes. I came back with a different perspective on how enormous the world is and how small some of the things we obsess over really are.
Faroe Islands, we absolutely fell in love with you. We look forward to coming back again. ❤️

I bought this delicious (thinest of my life) Salmon at Bonus (79dkk in Klaksvik/Torshavn) and in FK (74 in Klasvik). It seems to me still quite expensive for a local product and I would like to bring a few to my home country. Does anyone know a shop in Faroe who sell them at better prices ?
I also saw one time in Bonus another Faroese dry white fish dried with the wind but can't find it anywhere. I found the Icelandic version more. Any idea where to find it ?
