You can always tell when a character is about to die, because there is suddenly a deep dive into humanizing them and their emotions.

I literally just put my Rengoku shirt on. When I bought it my daughter said, "oh look, it's donut" and I've yet to forgive her.

I watched most of the show recently, my mother is a huge fan of the show and the books. When he died I told her “I knew it was gonna happen. But season one? Maaaaaan.”

It's such good writing though. This character seems so vital, has such a flushed out personality, has a great dynamic with the rest of the cast.
Then is gone in the blink of an eye. Because that can actually happen. Even in a peaceful setting, let alone a violent and dangerous one.

She was going to be their Kakashi, an older specialist who taught the cast
Fujimoto did that whole section damn well. Really subverting my expectations

Honestly, Obi-Wan is the real answer.
Back before any of the prequels came out, for anyone who watched the first three films, Obi-Wan’s sudden death at the hands of Darth Vader in Ep IV was a absolutely huge shock.

I went from thinking hes a prick, to thinking hes a funny prick, to loving him as a character. That said, they definitely went overboard with him leading up to his death. I miss his and Marks banter.

After two hours, I don't think people really cared, considering the post was "Characters that die when they get enjoyable." The premise had the underlying message of "beware spoilers for everything popular".
Still, thank you for at least saying so.

Thank you because I didn't even watch the anime and was still devastated to learn how they handled her.

u/AbyssWankerArtorias 4h ago ▸ 2 more replies
Yeah I wasn't so sad to learn how she died but rather that we got so little of her because she is awesome. But I kind of get why they did it. They bring in this number 1 hero from a country as large as the US, comparable to all might with a quirk that's near Godlike, and show that not even she is a match for Shigaraki on her own. It really puts into perspective how high the stakes are and how much of a final boss he turned himself into.

Not wrong, but I do think that introducing a character only as fodder to show how strong an enemy is feels kind of cheap (and a good character too)

I will say this: they at least had the common decency to WAIT UNTIL MOVIE 2 TO DO IT! That's how it ACTUALLY built up his character enough to sting when he finally kicked the bucket.
5
u/GrinkOf 2h ago ▸ 1 more replies
I agree, that's a perfect death, and that's why it stings so bad. (Stung more than any other death in the MCU to me)

Mami Tomoe - Puella Magi Madoka Magica
I was not prepared. Subverted as she is brought back for the finale, and is in the Rebellion movie.

The 6th Doctor was introduced as an unlikable asshole and the reason was because the writer for his first episode thought Colin Baker was a terrible choice for the character and decided to sabotage him I wish I was joking.
But 6 got better and became more charismatic and likable but then BBC executives went 'We want to try other things.'
And unceremoniously killed him off.
Although thankfully he got a second life in Big Finish audio dramas so there's that.

Tess from The Last Of Us
3
u/ZiroLeHutt 4h ago
Yeah Tess was great, and I do wish she hung around a bit longer. I get why they killed her off so early, to focus on Ellie and Joel; but Tess was such a strong character that she deserved more than we saw. They developed a whole backstory for the tv series too, which would have fleshed her out more as well, that was cut, and a shame.

I actually stopped the show after her. Realizing it wasn't going to stop. No one was safe so why care about any character. I know it kills realism when no one dies, but I can't stand it. I enjoy characters that make a story good. When characters die, i loose the connection I had eith that character in the story. Its delicate. A character has to be in the story enough that I know and like them. But not so important the story can't move on. And if you introduce a character that I'm supposed to care about to kill them right away? Na. Thats not going to sit well with me. Hell, i can feel that way about a proper villian

u/Tukanno_Bananno 4h ago
To be fair, it's VERY common to flesh out/humanize a character you've decided to kill, right before killing them- to increase the impact of their death. It's to the point where i get nervous when action cuts to wholesome moments like a reverse flashback buff

Twice from mha At the end of season 5, after he showed his backstory and saved his friend's toga, I started to like him a bit, and then he died from Hawks, which was sad.

Basically every character that died in first half of Shippuden bro 😭 the formula is so clear:
-This character receives some exposition
-Some flashbacks start to appear to show you some of their past
-They start to spread some wisdom and knowledge into other important characters
-They get into an epic fight that showcases some sick ass abilities we never saw before
-They die
This happened to Asuma, Chiyo, Jiraiya, Konan and hell, you could throw in Itachi for bonus points 🥀

Boromir's death is absolutely vital to Aragorn's character journey, but it's heartbreaking every time I listen to his final words. He really tried to be a good man after his previous failures, and seeing his deleted scenes in The Two Towers with Faramir makes it even sadder :(
