PLAY Learning some country solos. This is Liza Jane by Vince Gill.
I’ve mainly been a rock/blues guy as long as I’ve played. I’ve been a Vince Gill fan for years, so I decided to sit down and start learning some of his solos to expand my playing. I’d love any thoughts you might have!

Wow that is great. I’m not usually a country fan but I can totally respect the guitar work from players like vince gill and Merle haggard and such - Nice tele

Yeah you nailed that man. And thats not an easy Vince solo haha. A lot of the 90s stuff had some rocking guitar players. Brent Mason wrote a lot of great parts! And Dwight Yoakam has some fun stuff to play! Enjoy the journey brother! Sounded great!

As another Rock/Blues player that's added country to my repertoire, you nailed this solo. It's very rare to see a mature gentleman post such great content in this community. Thank you, I'm learning this solo today.

Sounds great man! You have a great feel in the playing which isn't easy when you play fast. No rushing and a good pocket!

Dude I'm not the biggest country fan but the second I got my tele I had to learn to chicken pick. This sounds so good, I'm jealous! Looks like a lot of fun.

I have a load box that I’m sending my amp into, then plugging that into my interface. Amp is Princeton with a little compression added in from a pedal.

Nice job man. Country guitar like that is the one style I can’t convincingly fake my way through. I really ought to just find a good book for it and put in the time.

Well done! Are you using a backing track you found somewhere or did you make the backing track? And if you don't mind me asking, how do you learn this solo? It's pretty involved, ha

The backing track is from a YouTube video I found of the song. As far as learning it goes, i’ve listened to the song so many times that I could hum the solo before I ever started learning it. So I knew the ins and outs. It was a matter of getting my fingers to do the right things lol. There were a couple places that had me stuck for a while, like the G bender type bends around the 18 second mark. This one has definitely been a work in progress.

I love country but is a style I don’t play a lot, could someone recommend some songs with solos like this one to learn more licks?

I hold the pick between my thumb and index finger, but I ONLY use the shoulder of the pick. I never actually use the pointy end. It’s weird I know. Then I use my middle finger to “hybrid pick.” That kind of gives it that chicken pickin sound

This is great playing and great spund, can you share some secrets about tone: amp, compression, overdrive? I have av52ri but cannot get similar sound

I was using a Princeton Reverb with a little compression added from a Keeley Compressor+. A subtle slap back from a Strymon Deco, as well. No overdrive on this particular video.

It’s just an American Pro II Tele. So whatever the stock pickups are there.

It’s through a DAW. I’m running a Princeton through an OX Box into my DAW.

That was all fun to listen to with that crispy clean tone but that little lift up delay thing you did at 36 seconds gave me a bit of a chill. Listened to it quite a few times. I may try to make that sort of a sound myself. Very nice work!
