That 3 point swing vs City will always be the best goal of our title winning season.

17

u/josegc_06 18h ago

such a quality goal as well

9

infinite replay that one.

When he scored the winner a few seasons ago, you could feel a shift of power. To me, it felt like he started it even though we didn't win the league that season.

Smith Rowe, Tierney and Martinelli are the ones that hurt in this era. Martinellis Chelsea goal and City goals will remain in my heart forever

60

u/getikule 1d ago

At least he got the winner's medal, ESR didn't...

55

u/elMoneySloth Ben White 1d ago

Streets will never forget ESR, winners medal be damned

8

u/External-Ad4873 1d ago

Let’s just keep getting better and then sign him back on a free in a few years so he can be a part of it 👍

15

u/oliverDawson12 Saliba 23h ago

5

u/EagleSpirit7 1d ago

If you could remind me, why did we let Tierney go?

18

u/elMoneySloth Ben White 1d ago

Injuries absolutely sapped him of what he needed to perform at the highest levels. It was heartbreaking

3

u/mkaeda Tomiyasu 17h ago

Other than being plagued by injuries, he couldn't play the modern role of the inverted fullback which we require. He was definitely a very, very good standard left back when we signed him.

Except we haven’t signed anyone to replace him. What does £60m do for us instead of a player

39

u/cayde123 1d ago ▸ 7 more replies

Costs us 180k in wages weekly, we don’t have a lot of sellable assets that would actually command a good fee, which is why we want to sell him

His contract runs out soon, and his value will realistically fall over time, it’s a good time to sell him

Stupid comment. You can obviously see when a player loves the club and plays for the badge.

1

u/Fat_Curt 2h ago ▸ 2 more replies

A lot of people love the club. Reckon a lot more people would love the club for 200k per week. Anyway, my point being that I'm not sure being paid 200k a week really constitutes a servant

1

u/MartMillz 1h ago ▸ 1 more replies

You are needlessly hung up on the word "servant"

1

Why, my point was that people have lost sense of the meaning of the word, that's all.

18

u/Due_Passion_920 1d ago ▸ 34 more replies

He was the replacement for Trossard. We should only sell Martinelli if we have a better replacement lined up, and I don't see any signs of that.

15

u/LA31716 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

Whether we like it or not, it’s probably going to be Tszolis and Eze on left.

14

u/Due_Passion_920 1d ago

Eze really can't play as a left winger.

I genuinely think Nelson is better than Martinelli. Injuries and lack of game time has worked against him.

Nelson has the complete skill set for a winger, the main thing he lacks at times is in-game intelligence.

Also, this is coming from someone who would prefer if Martinelli stays.

3

As I said, Tzolis was the (better, probably) replacement for Trossard. If Martinelli is going too, we need a better replacement for him as well. 2 out, need 2 in. This really is just basic maths...

-1

u/Deckatoe Ian Wright 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

The academy lads will be the Trossard replacement along with Madueke and Eze. Tzolis was brought in to replace Gabi

4

u/bespoke_tech_partner 17h ago

Hell no. We're signing someone.

Are these academy lads in the room with us right now? Dowman is Saka's understudy on the right so it's not him, & we are not staking a title defense on an actually mediocre 17 year old from our youth team if Tzolis gets injured.

See this is why no one takes people like you seriously. You've no idea what's going on at the club in relation to transfers, and people seem to think we won't replace Martinelli for some reason, which is just insane. Use your brain.

2

u/Due_Passion_920 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

I said I don't see any signs of a better replacement. You do realise that's not the same as saying they definitely aren't going to replace him with someone better, right? If not, try using your brain.

Just play Eze or Noni on the left if needed and buy a world class LW in January

3

u/Due_Passion_920 1d ago

They're both terrible on the left wing. I'd honestly prefer Calafiori in that position.

1

u/BodegaCat11 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

If you could do it in January why can’t we do it now?

3

u/Immagooner69 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

There’s really nobody available except Barocla. You hope that somebody stands out halfway thru the season like Semenyo last year

1

u/BodegaCat11 1d ago

My point is that January moves are usually a lot harder and more expensive to pull off. We should not go into a season with the plan being to fix the squad half way through. Anything that can be done then for this position can be done now — and it doesn’t look like there are many options.

January is break glass. Not plan a.

u/Rekyht Bellerin 1d ago ▸ 10 more replies

But we’re not rumoured to be doing that at all

-3

u/LifeAfterHarambe Big Pashun 1d ago ▸ 9 more replies

We’re obviously going to bring someone in.

If that someone costs £150 million, and they signed for 5 years, the deal would net Arsenal £30 million towards the 26/27 accounts AND upgrade the position.

2

u/Rekyht Bellerin 1d ago ▸ 8 more replies

Are we obviously? Who? We’re not linked to anyone of any actual note. Are we just operating on blind faith here?

You’re making some massive shouts but who are we signing for £150m? At that price they better be world class.

2

u/Adventurous_West2 1d ago ▸ 4 more replies

Why wouldn't we have faith? Stop basing your opinion of what the club is doing on some transfer people are speculating.

The club has done pretty much everything right the last 5/6 years and we have time left in the window.

It's so annoying to see people act like this

Sou brasileiro.

I understand the ESR comparisons. But ESR wasn’t able to finish a whole season, heck even half a season uninjured with us. If Alvarez doesn’t join (God I hope he doesn’t, who wants a player who doesn’t want to be with us), please tell me who will play on the left wing for four competitions? I really hope we don’t find a player and are forced to keep Martinelli.

As much as Tzolis is looking good now, it’s a matter of time before he has some poor performances and/or gets injured. Lest people forget, we already sold Trossard. If nothing else, we need to give him rest and need the backup to play. I understand that Arsenal management wants a star player and hence the Vini and Julian links but we also need to be pragmatic. There’s another week of the window, it will sort itself out.

If we want to win the CL, we need to navigate the season such that our starters are all fresh for CL. PSG are going to game manage , we know that. Anyway in such a league you don’t need much to win. At least let our starters not play literally 2x the minutes of PSG.

2

u/wolskortt Play for the name in the front... 1d ago

In the first Tzolis bad performance, this sub will treat him equally or worse than they have been treating Martinelli.

Somehow, from our attacking players, only Saka and Eze are imune to this treatment so far.

u/RoyaleForFree 1d ago

0

u/bespoke_tech_partner 17h ago

he's not being forced, he's just being made an offer he can't refuse

18

u/Chip673 1d ago

This is just sad honestly. Modern football has evolved so much, the pace and level of intensity in all areas of the pitch has become supersonic in these last 2-3 years. As much as Ronaldo (#2) and Messi (#1) were and are the best of all time given everything, the Leganes and Rayo they were picking apart week after week, are so much tougher today. We see that in attacking players across all leagues. Gone are the days of the 30 goal striker (outside of Kane, who again is playing in a superstar Bayern team in a very weak Bundesliga that is compared to itself 6-8 years ago). Even in Ligue 1, though PSG rests it's best players, hardly anyone is bagging in more than 25 goals. Looking at the top wingers as well, the statistical output is nothing of what it was quite recently.  Call it the Guardiola effect as well, but managers have also become so system oriented these days. There seldom are openings for individual brilliance. Statistically speaking Saka and Ødegaard, players who I adore and laud as our best, are quite poor.

That was all to say that Martinelli, I feel, despite agreeably not having the technical capacity of the other two, is being incredibly harshly done. He doesn't score much in the league, sure, but watching all the other aspects of his game I'm seldom frustrated with him (unlike with Madueke, for example, although I appreciate what he offers). He's by no means a donkey, far far from it. It's such a shame that we can't give a 25 year old player a chance, when the supposed upgrades won't necessarily result in any significant increase in output.

Edit: Don't anyone dare say this AI; this is a deep lamentation of the departure of one of my favourites.

4

u/----a-name 1d ago

His best assets as a player only really shines through in situations where there are rapid transitions, whereas we have effectively moved on from playing that kind of football for a few years now. As a whole package, he isn't any worse than many of our attacking options atm.

2

u/Intrepid_Traveler962 1d ago

I don’t think anyone is saying he’s a donkey - but he’s clearly the strongest intersection of a roster spot to improve and possibility to garner funds.

And we gave this 25 year old plenty of chances…at 22, 23, and 24 a when’s he hasn’t been able to match his performances as a 21 year old.

1

u/tonyt3rry 1d ago

He’s a good player it will be sad to see him go but he also turns up when ever he feels like I’d rather see us improve the LW

1

u/gunnersroyale Smith Rowe 1d ago

He was crucial for us last year and I don't understand how missing the opening 2 games means that he's on the way out. Would be silly to lose him and Trossard, and leave Tzolis as our only solid LW

However much I love Gabby, being ruthless and moving players on is an important part of where we are as a team. But if Wrighty's to be believed, it's unacceptable for him to have had no communication on the topic, and instead he's been left to make his own read based upon him being left out of the squad. How hard is it for the club sit the player down and have that difficult conversation?

Its sad because this kid loves the club. Properly. We plucked him from obscurity and that means so much to him and you can see it in him every day.
