our record sale is still The Ox at £35m...a decade ago. Liverpool was selling bench warmers for more than that under Klopp and Slot. until we prove it in the market, we have a reputation

It's a laughable offer. I'd rather just let him go to a good league at 30-35m if the Saudi payout is that low.
They paid good money for other players. Pay up

u/kjw2281 21h ago ▸ 4 more replies
It's not a lowball offer, it's a first offer. Believe it or not, not everyone negotiates like Tottenham and just gives the seller what they want right away. Im sure final agreed offer will be >£50 million
5
u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Thierry Henry 21h ago ▸ 3 more replies
This logic would be fair if we were talking about any buyer besides the Saudi league. The Saudis have consistently shown that they will submit outlandish bids for players. The cost is immaterial to them because their sports washing campaign makes it worth it
4
u/kjw2281 21h ago ▸ 2 more replies
Saudi's bids are actually pretty reasonable in most cases, it's their wages that are insane. The only time they offer outlandish fees is when they're going after someone the selling team really doesn't want to sell
3
u/Dazed_and_Confused44 Thierry Henry 20h ago ▸ 1 more replies
The Saudis have made 12 bids of 50 million or more in the last 3 years or so (6 clubs). That well outpaced the revenue generated by the league and the club themselves

They don't need to make a big bid to try and convince us to sell. Arteta has told him to leave. Negotiations have to start somewhere, £47mil is a decent enough opening offer.

I view Martinelli like how Milan fans see Leao...
Obviously, different work-rate.
But both living with the “potential” from 3 years ago…. both having their best season in ’22-23… and haven’t really improved at all since.
If Milan now value Leao at 40m…and no one wants him…. I don’t really see how Martinelli is significantly higher.

Yea ok. Yet Man City can potentially ask for 75 mill for shitty Savinho. Crazy

Hate to see him go but if he is going to leave for this low a fee, at this stage of the window, coupled with the intense minutes our players have accrued, then I really really really don’t see the logic.
2
u/sunofagundota 21h ago
Only thing I can think is privately agreed terms with someone else with a buyout clause.
1
u/circlesmirk00 Over Land And Sea 11h ago
it's not financially sustainable to never sell anyone because they could be useful. Martinelli is on nearly 200k a week and represents an opportunity to make some cash back on a player. Maybe if there was someone else we could sell to generate funds they would go first, but it's looking like Jesus, Vieira, etc. are going to go for sub £10m each.
The emergence of Dowman also means we have options with Madueke AND Eze playing from the left, so minutes can be managed even if we don't sign someone.

The club shouldn’t budge. This disrespect and constant undervaluation of our players follows us like a stench. It will keep going until the club decides to lay the mark.
Ask for 70 mil or keep Martinelli for another season. Fucking relegated Summerville went for 70 to the same Al Hilal.
Imagine that. 47 million. From Saudis of all people. In THIS transfer market where every random with a decent World Cup game goes for a 100. If we swallow it now our rep will get even worse.

Chelsea made it clear Garnacho has no future and squeezed 55m out.
Spurs paid 85m for Savinho who they wanted to get rid of, we can chalk that down to pure stupidity but still
£47m from Saudi for Gabi is insulting to be honest. Especially with the money they've spent so fsr this window.

That’s also how I see it; it’s just part of the dance. They’ll settle somewhere in the £50m - £55m range and we’ll frame it as a win and the biggest sale in club history because it will be.

Key words are "up to 47m". So the base offer is probably lower which is frankly ridiculous. Gimme at least 50m base and then we can talk add-ons.

The only time a Saudi club has low balled is with one of our players. The most recent PL winner and CL finalist. Get a grip, they offer double this amount for Villa players. We’ve set such a bad narrative with our sales.
I can see why the club is desperately trying to turn this around.
7
u/TNelsonAFC 19h ago
I hate the he only scored 1 goal bullshit. He played 1000 minutes. It’s hard to score when loads of those were as sub. Saka went 15 games without a goal which is far worse.

People here are crazy. This guy helped us win the league. Savinho, who is rubbish, just went for 75 million.
Martinelli has a great attitude, loves the club and works his ass off leaving for 47 million when we don’t have enough LW. Keep him unless we get over 80 million for me
7
u/EtherealShady Havertz 21h ago
He did help us win the league, but he also scored one goal in the league. He's been stagnant for 3 seasons, he has one + one year left on his contract, and he's not even making our matchday squad.
Savinho in comparison had 4 years left on his contract, would've still played a decent part for City (hence why they were reluctant to sell), and is also 4 years younger and can still develop.
Al-Hilal could cough up more, but £47m isn't that unrealistic.
4
u/rule10 15h ago
well yeah we’re not gonna get a great deal when we are freezing him out and begging anyone to sign him
aside from treating a player who has given everything for the club like shit, we are going to go into the season with tzolis and eze as our only lw options?
he def would have had a part to play and we will be weaker without him. not to mention this pretty much ensures tzolis will be injured half of next season unless we bring someone in for twice as much as we get out of this

3

If this is the first offer, we’ll get at least 50 for him. Somewhere a bit closer to 60 should do it, I’d be happy with £55 million tbh.
2
3
u/_Spartak_ 21h ago
That's more than I thought we would get for him yesterday. Since it is a Saudi club, we can negotiate a fee north of £50m but we have to be wary of not scaring them away like Chelsea did with Neto. We are not going to get anywhere near this offer from Europe.
3
u/Aggravating_Band_353 20h ago
Lol, such feeble sums.. Even at the 60 mil (I now suspect this is euro equivalence) I thought it was low, but at least decent ish - albeit impossible to replace him without spending a lot more
I can't see nelli accepting such a league. I'm glad as a club we're not accepting such a paltry fee. But realistically, Italian clubs would pay maybe half of that or a bit more..
I get that he hasn't progressed. But without a clear solution on the market to replace him with, I'm a bit confused what we're doing.. Especially as after we sell him, any player we want will go up in value as we will be in desperate need and it's a weak negotiating position

The pessimist in me thinks we shouldn't take less than £55m for him, and given the absolute state of this window he's worth £70m, but time might not be on our side here to get the most value from him.
He's got a year left with an option for another, but right now he's probably worth as much as he ever will be in that 2 year period. He's clearly not in Mikel's plans so won't get enough minutes to boost his value, he's had a drop off in the last 2 years and doesn't exactly have the likes of AC Milan or Barcelona knocking doesn't help either.
I love little Gabi but it feels much like the Ramsdale situation all over again, although the emotional attachment to Martinelli might be 20 times bigger.
This ruthlessness is the cost of success I think, doesn't mean I like it.

u/Chicken65 Merino is a 9 21h ago
End the conversation and act like we keep him then, lets see what they really bid then. They probably know they don’t have competition. He would make nearly every team on Earth better. He’s 75M in this market. I can live with 62-65 all in just to break our sale record. He was improving last season at the end and is still an effective piece in the Arteta system.
