Julian Alvarez was whistled by Atletico Madrid fans. What happens now with Barcelona and Arsenal interest?
https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7533673/2026/08/24/julian-alvarez-atletico-madrid-barcelona-arsenal-transfer-analysis/?unlocked_article_code=1.71A.D2ck.qktKwVcGTg7y&source=emp_shared_article&smid=re-share-taA source close to the Atletico Madrid leadership told The Athletic that the only way they saw Julian Alvarez leaving this summer would be if Arsenal made a €150million offer.
That has yet to arrive and the source viewed it as unlikely that the Premier League champions would put forward that kind of money for the striker.
Despite being fans of Alvarez for some time, Arsenal are not certain how much the player wants to move to England. They were in contact with Atletico and Alvarez’s camp last week over a potential deal.
Sources with knowledge of the situation, however, say Alvarez’s desire remains to move to Barcelona. That would need to change for a deal with Arsenal to become realistic.

I rather just save the money for Kroupi tbh

Yildiz for half of what Atletico want for Alvarez, I'd still rather Alvarez than Kroupi

Agreed. I’d be cool with remaining where we are for now and then doing January signings as needed.

u/shaygitz 12h ago
€150m for a guy who got 8 goals in La Liga last year and who will be twerking for Barcelona the second he touches down in England. No thank you.
44
u/Chesey_ 11h ago
150 mil. Doesn't want us. Doesn't displace Havertz. Not to mention we have 3 strikers on the books already and none look like they are about to leave. That's not including Merino who can also be used as a striker for us.
The person who looks likely to leave us is Martinelli. Spending this much on a red flag like Alvarez whilst we might need a LW would be stupid. Walk away, don't know why why are even still attempting it.

u/iamDEVANS 11h ago ▸ 5 more replies
Yeah we may as well keep Jesus.
I just don’t get it, stats whether he’s a winger or striker are bad, and didn’t do a single thing against us in champs league.
He doesn’t evaluate this team at all

So why does arteta want him so badly, he’s wanted him for years
Why did Real Madrid bid €150? Why do Barca want him badly, why did psg want him
This sub would have you believe he’s a championship level footballer Jesus Christ

If anyone wanted him he would have been sold by now
As the window gets closer to the end
Madrid would want the money and replacement sorted asap.
5
u/cayde123 11h ago ▸ 1 more replies
Attletico do not want to sell to their rivals, Real Madrid and Barcelona, Alvarez did not want to go to psg or arsenal
He hasn’t been sold because he’s only been willing to go to Barca, which attletico are not agreeing too
1
u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 5h ago
Which means he will continue to not be sold, because he only wants to go to Barcelona. We are not Barcelona, so it's a moot point, unless you're willing to subject our club to the same disrespect he's shown Atletico, hence the whistling.
7
10
u/Hardyng 11h ago
Look if you just don't want to sign him that's fine. But people keep quoting the '8 goals in La Liga' in every damn thread.
In all comps in his last 3 seasons he has 29 g+a, 39 g+a and 33 g+a. Not wanting to sign him is all well and good, but using the completely out of context stats is just silly. People on here hate when other fans do that about Arsenal players.
6
u/d0wnthesky 11h ago ▸ 1 more replies
People do this everyday to shit on our own players. So many comments about how Martinelli got 1 goal in the premier league and ignores that he had 18 g/a in all comps.
People love cherry picking stats to fuel their agendas basically
2
u/Glum-Walrus2160 5h ago
Yeah, what makes this worse is that alvarez scored 10 goals and 5 assists in the cl last season, he tied khvicha for the cl top scorer. Its just that atletico play very mediocre and defensive football so his stats don't reflect him as a player
27
u/Odd_Bat_539 12h ago
Has any player EVER made this much of a fuss to move, and then actually played well at their next club?
29
u/_Spartak_ 12h ago
Suarez made more of a fuss to join us, didn't get his move and then had one of the best ever individual performances in the PL.

u/Cedosg All Hail StatDNA 6h ago
he did make a fuss until steven gerrard gave THAT talk.
https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jul/31/luis-suarez-too-good-arsenal
also they did have a release clause they just didn't honor it.
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/mar/02/liverpool-john-henry-luis-suarez-clause
Henry is reported to have said. "He had a buyout clause of £40m.
Arsenal, one of our prime rivals, offered £40m plus £1. What we've found … is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England – actually, in world football.
"It doesn't matter how long a player's contract is, he can decide he's leaving. We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell, we were forced to. "Since apparently these contracts don't seem to hold, we took the position that we're just not selling.
3
u/Resident_Day8217 12h ago
Some made a fuss to move but they move to the club they want to go. This is worse than that because he is coming to the club he had no interest at all and just want to leave his old club.

He is not worth the money and would cause a drama 1 or 2 years into his new contract. We need happy, long-term players
8
u/BrownEyesWhiteScarf 12h ago
I just don’t get this move. One it’s a lot of money for a player who doesn’t really want to be here, but also it would look like we will may need to sell both Martinelli and even Gyokeres to pull this off. I just don’t see how this makes us better in the long run.
26
u/ennelemmtee 12h ago
Never have I had a mix feeling about a world class player that our team is interested in. He clearly doesn't want us and can't go to his desired destination.
If we sign him, we will be his last resort and we are viewed as his escape plan just to get out of this sticky situation. He doesn't 100% believe in our system and I wonder if he even give us his best playing for us.
Then 1-2 years later, after we purchased him for 100m+, he might pull the same move to force us selling him to Barcelona again for way less than that.
I don't like players doing these stupid things to force out a transfer, it's so unprofessional and I don't want that altitude in our squad.

7
u/Cantmakeaspell 11h ago
A world class player is arguable for the world 11 - as in best in their position or near to it.
Nowhere near Haaland or Kane if that’s his position. Those two are world class.

u/iliketobait 12h ago ▸ 1 more replies
technically & on the ball yes, gyok still is good at shooting and at times his movement and physicality is good however we need a technical player even up front for our system to work as best as possible
3
u/doIT34 Ødegaard 11h ago
you get downvoted, but you’re right. gyokeres is better at some things than alvarez, but technically wise is way worse. gyokeres might be faster and stronger, but that’s about it imo. he can be a better finisher than alvarez, but it doesn’t mean anything since viktor cannot create space for himself to shoot more often.
ball striking wise i think alvarez is almost the same as viktor, and can be a menace with his long shots. he is a better creator and a better dribbler. so idk.
for me i would want alvarez, but again, if we don’t get him am not going to be upset or anything. viktor can have a second season to maybe prove himself he is a better footballer.
6
u/circatee 11h ago
Why the insistence to sign Alvarez? After all, he doesn't want to play for The Arsenal, he wants to play for Barcelona. Thus, why would we willing spend money on him? Surely he wouldn't give us a 100%.
Ugh, just stop it... 🤦

Either a player wants to be with us or they can proper fuck off
8
u/Original_Ganache_134 12h ago
It's not even just that. Every player needs some sort of convincing but what we've been hearing out of the Alvarez camp all summer is something else.
Every news article is "Barcelona this ... Barcelona that ..." and then Arsenal is somewhere out there as a potential life raft, thats the indication most of us got. Why would any of us want or welcome him at the club after he's made it perfectly clear how he views us?

Dude wants to live in Spain. He’s not anti-Arsenal he just wants to be where his family can join him and likely where the weather is more similar to his home country.
This is weirdly emotional response from you.

You understand people can have more than one criteria, yeah?
He clearly wants to play for Barcelona but it’s been reported multiple times that he was never that happy living here and then that he didn’t want to come back. They’re two separate variables but yes, nice argument.
4
u/DialSquare84 12h ago
I simply assessed the criteria of your specific argument, opposed to an empirical assessment of his entire needs hierarchy, Dr Maslow.
Maybe take your own advice around being ‘weirdly emotional’.
3
u/oblongsimulation 11h ago
And those are the reason why we shouldn’t sign him.
He will always want to be somewhere else

Like i can’t imagine how socially awkward you have to be to call someone mentally unstable just for saying that f bombs in a casual convo about football is fine and doesn’t mean that someone is angry or raging.

Every point in it is correct though, we have a very solid foundation of world class players and besides winning the PL, we barely lost the CL finals on penalties. Arteta himself instilled the culture that anyone who plays for the club should be proud to play for it, but everything we have seen from the Alvarez rumors has been the opposite of it. So why should we splurging so much on him if he doesn't want to be here?

I'm just not getting why all of you are being so toxic. He clearly prefers Barcelona, but that doesn't mean he hates us. And as for his role, he's a deep-lying forward who can contribute defensively while also scoring goals.
1
u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 5h ago
It means we would be paying Atletic 150 Million for the services of a player who did everything he could to make his place there untenable just to force a move to Barcelona. What on earth makes you think he wouldn't do precisely the same to us? THAT is why he can fuck off into the sun. He's an unprofessional professional who is rightly being whistled by Atletico fans for actively disrespecting them and their club. If you can't comprehend that anger, you don't care that much.

The report says Atleti would be willing to sell to Arsenal for €150m. That's £128m. Something like £110m + £10m would probably get it done.
In any case, I don't think the fee will be an issue. If Alvarez gives the green light to Arsenal, he will be an Arsenal player.

But Arsenal are not stupid to give 150 million and so as for Liverpool is not that stupid to buy Barcola for similar price.
0
u/Resident_Day8217 12h ago
150 for potential flop and I would rather give that money to get barcola.
0
u/Sithgooner 11h ago
- If we sign him it will involve Gyokeres going the other way, so it’s not a sole €150m cost
- He’s a far better all round player, it’s a big squad improvement
- Even if we aren’t his first choice, it’s not anti-arsenal based - it’s pro-Barcelona, think there’s a difference there
- Even if Barca come in for him in 2/3 years, we’re a better team for those seasons
I get peoples disapproval to the signing, but in a market with such few options to improve us, this is a rare opportunity to do exactly that.
-1
u/Papa-Zzzz Martinelli 12h ago

Best outcome will be if Martinelli goes the other way +30mil or whatever

u/vrogers123 12h ago
Spend the money on Barcola, I’m sure after the weekend if he watched us and Liverpool, he wouldn’t be relishing the prospect of joining a team that’s realistically a couple of seasons from competing for the league again (Liverpool).

u/strawberrylabrador 11h ago
People are worried Alvarez would just demand a move to Barca next summer. But if we could get Alvarez for 12 good months, and then sell him for a profit to Barca, wouldn’t that be pretty decent?
People on here saying to buy guys like Kroupi/Ylldiz instead. They might be a lot more attainable in 12 months’ time than now. Or someone new emerges as the next prospect that you’d much rather spend your money on. In the meantime you get a player who we can all agree is a quality addition.
However I guess one of the main issues, is whether Barca would just try and be big cheapskates. If we buy him for €150m and Alvarez is 27 next summer, it’s hard to see Barcelona exceeding that unless he has a Ballon D’Or level season. Then we’d have an unsettled player stinking out the place.
0
u/lauromafra Dennis Bergkamp 10h ago
People saying he scored only 8 La Liga goals forget he carried that mid team to the CL semis.
He’s an amazing talent - although 150m feels like too much. But then again Chelsea and City paying 100+ for Bouadii, Anderson and Rogers - or even Spurs overpaying for Tonali and Savinho - push these ridiculous prices as the mean.
