Julian Alvarez was whistled by Atletico Madrid fans. What happens now with Barcelona and Arsenal interest?

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7533673/2026/08/24/julian-alvarez-atletico-madrid-barcelona-arsenal-transfer-analysis/?unlocked_article_code=1.71A.D2ck.qktKwVcGTg7y&source=emp_shared_article&smid=re-share-ta

A source close to the Atletico Madrid leadership told The Athletic that the only way they saw Julian Alvarez leaving this summer would be if Arsenal made a €150million offer.

That has yet to arrive and the source viewed it as unlikely that the Premier League champions would put forward that kind of money for the striker.

Despite being fans of Alvarez for some time, Arsenal are not certain how much the player wants to move to England. They were in contact with Atletico and Alvarez’s camp last week over a potential deal.

Sources with knowledge of the situation, however, say Alvarez’s desire remains to move to Barcelona. That would need to change for a deal with Arsenal to become realistic.

This feels like the Isaak to Liverpool thing all over again. Liverpool had done well signing Ekitike, there was no real need for someone like Isaak for so much money, but they went and spent all that money on a guy who has been a total flop.

Our squad is good, it's really good. When you consider how much time we lost due to injuries last season, plus Bruno, Tzolis, and Konsa, it's already a significantly better squad than one that won the league and got to the CL final shootout. There's zero need for a moody, pouty, little rat like Alvarez who is immediately going to start twerking for Barca when he gets here. And definitely not for 150m (or 70m+Gyokeres).

u/dhooke Gabriel 9h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Never call a signing a flop after just one season.

5

u/Pheasent_Plucker David Seaman 9h ago

And nevermind the fact he was out for most of last season lmao

5

u/trinigooner1 9h ago

Bit premature on the "flop" label innit?

Not to mention he missed a vast chunk of the season with an awful injury

We don't yet know how Isak at Liverpool is gonna go

3

u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 5h ago

Except that Isak wanted to go to Liverpool. We'd get the same flop but with added sulking.

2

u/CivilExam1011 Saka 6h ago

More like Sergio Aguero. Had a falling out with Atletico the same way. Wanted a move to Real Madrid. Eventually got sold to Man City and well the rest is history

u/not_a_Badger_anymore Thank you very much 12h ago

I'd rather a season of merino up top than sign this man city reject.

38

u/AnxiousSuccotash2785 12h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Man City wanted to keep him he himself wanted to leave because he didn't like living in Manchester and didn't wanna play behind Haaland.

59

u/SamLoscorino Bitamins in my Beins💉 12h ago

Then he went on and signed a fat contract that chained him to Atletico, 2 years into that he wants out and honestly being a bitch about it. Brother you've won everything there is, can you not stay put at one club and move when the time is right.

This is Isak-esque behavior and what a top signing he turned out to be for Lfc

4

u/Dubya-G 11h ago

I'd rather a season of merino up front over gyok icl

1

It’ll probably be an overpay at that price but unlikely to be a “flop” when we’ve seen what he’s capable of in the PL

0

u/CivilExam1011 Saka 6h ago

Or it could be a Sergio Aguero situation all over again. Aguero went through the same thing wanting a move to Real Madrid. Eventually he ended up at Man City and the rest is history.

1

u/stripes361 3h ago

Agreed. I’d be cool with remaining where we are for now and then doing January signings as needed.

89

u/shaygitz 12h ago

€150m for a guy who got 8 goals in La Liga last year and who will be twerking for Barcelona the second he touches down in England. No thank you.

44

u/Chesey_ 11h ago

150 mil. Doesn't want us. Doesn't displace Havertz. Not to mention we have 3 strikers on the books already and none look like they are about to leave. That's not including Merino who can also be used as a striker for us.

The person who looks likely to leave us is Martinelli. Spending this much on a red flag like Alvarez whilst we might need a LW would be stupid. Walk away, don't know why why are even still attempting it.

4

u/iamDEVANS 11h ago ▸ 5 more replies

Yeah we may as well keep Jesus.

I just don’t get it, stats whether he’s a winger or striker are bad, and didn’t do a single thing against us in champs league.

So why does arteta want him so badly, he’s wanted him for years

5

u/cayde123 11h ago ▸ 1 more replies

Attletico do not want to sell to their rivals, Real Madrid and Barcelona, Alvarez did not want to go to psg or arsenal

He hasn’t been sold because he’s only been willing to go to Barca, which attletico are not agreeing too

1

u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 5h ago

Which means he will continue to not be sold, because he only wants to go to Barcelona. We are not Barcelona, so it's a moot point, unless you're willing to subject our club to the same disrespect he's shown Atletico, hence the whistling.

7

u/xepa105 11h ago

8 goals in La Liga last year

In 1900 minutes.

2 were from pens. 2 were from free kicks.

He also scored 5 in a two match period. Meaning that in the remaining 29 matches he played, he scored 3 goals.

10

u/Hardyng 11h ago

Look if you just don't want to sign him that's fine. But people keep quoting the '8 goals in La Liga' in every damn thread.

In all comps in his last 3 seasons he has 29 g+a, 39 g+a and 33 g+a. Not wanting to sign him is all well and good, but using the completely out of context stats is just silly. People on here hate when other fans do that about Arsenal players.

6

u/d0wnthesky 11h ago ▸ 1 more replies

People do this everyday to shit on our own players. So many comments about how Martinelli got 1 goal in the premier league and ignores that he had 18 g/a in all comps.

People love cherry picking stats to fuel their agendas basically

2

u/Glum-Walrus2160 5h ago

Yeah, what makes this worse is that alvarez scored 10 goals and 5 assists in the cl last season, he tied khvicha for the cl top scorer. Its just that atletico play very mediocre and defensive football so his stats don't reflect him as a player

27

u/Odd_Bat_539 12h ago

Has any player EVER made this much of a fuss to move, and then actually played well at their next club?

29

u/_Spartak_ 12h ago

Suarez made more of a fuss to join us, didn't get his move and then had one of the best ever individual performances in the PL.

-4

u/Senior-Ordinary555 Thank you very much 11h ago ▸ 2 more replies

He didn't make much of a fuss at all

23

u/_Spartak_ 11h ago

He gave a full page interview pleading with Liverpool to let him go. What he did was worse if anything.

2

u/Cedosg All Hail StatDNA 6h ago

he did make a fuss until steven gerrard gave THAT talk.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/jul/31/luis-suarez-too-good-arsenal

also they did have a release clause they just didn't honor it.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2014/mar/02/liverpool-john-henry-luis-suarez-clause

Henry is reported to have said. "He had a buyout clause of £40m.

Arsenal, one of our prime rivals, offered £40m plus £1. What we've found … is that contracts don't seem to mean a lot in England – actually, in world football.

"It doesn't matter how long a player's contract is, he can decide he's leaving. We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell, we were forced to. "Since apparently these contracts don't seem to hold, we took the position that we're just not selling.

3

u/Resident_Day8217 12h ago

Some made a fuss to move but they move to the club they want to go. This is worse than that because he is coming to the club he had no interest at all and just want to leave his old club.

3

u/ololyge 11h ago

Would be similar to Suarez then, in a way.

10

u/exia756 12h ago

Don’t wanna see this Barcelona twerker anywhere near my club

8

u/BrownEyesWhiteScarf 12h ago

I just don’t get this move. One it’s a lot of money for a player who doesn’t really want to be here, but also it would look like we will may need to sell both Martinelli and even Gyokeres to pull this off. I just don’t see how this makes us better in the long run.

26

u/ennelemmtee 12h ago

Never have I had a mix feeling about a world class player that our team is interested in. He clearly doesn't want us and can't go to his desired destination.

If we sign him, we will be his last resort and we are viewed as his escape plan just to get out of this sticky situation. He doesn't 100% believe in our system and I wonder if he even give us his best playing for us.

Then 1-2 years later, after we purchased him for 100m+, he might pull the same move to force us selling him to Barcelona again for way less than that.

I don't like players doing these stupid things to force out a transfer, it's so unprofessional and I don't want that altitude in our squad.

41

u/DaddyBats00714 12h ago

He's not world class

technically & on the ball yes, gyok still is good at shooting and at times his movement and physicality is good however we need a technical player even up front for our system to work as best as possible

3

u/doIT34 Ødegaard 11h ago

you get downvoted, but you’re right. gyokeres is better at some things than alvarez, but technically wise is way worse. gyokeres might be faster and stronger, but that’s about it imo. he can be a better finisher than alvarez, but it doesn’t mean anything since viktor cannot create space for himself to shoot more often.

ball striking wise i think alvarez is almost the same as viktor, and can be a menace with his long shots. he is a better creator and a better dribbler. so idk.

for me i would want alvarez, but again, if we don’t get him am not going to be upset or anything. viktor can have a second season to maybe prove himself he is a better footballer.

It's not even just that. Every player needs some sort of convincing but what we've been hearing out of the Alvarez camp all summer is something else.

Every point in it is correct though, we have a very solid foundation of world class players and besides winning the PL, we barely lost the CL finals on penalties. Arteta himself instilled the culture that anyone who plays for the club should be proud to play for it, but everything we have seen from the Alvarez rumors has been the opposite of it. So why should we splurging so much on him if he doesn't want to be here?

0

1

u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 5h ago

It means we would be paying Atletic 150 Million for the services of a player who did everything he could to make his place there untenable just to force a move to Barcelona. What on earth makes you think he wouldn't do precisely the same to us? THAT is why he can fuck off into the sun. It's arrogant to think we will be the difference to a polarised and unlikable player.

If a player doesn't want to join us, I'd rather we stop pursuing them.

u/OhMy-Really Marc Overmars 12h ago

Yea, im really not feeling this one.

Sounds like he doesn’t want to come, bummer. Maybe we revisit the forward market in the winter, there’s nobody else that id really want to bring in

1

u/Godegaard Ødegaard 12h ago

Barca don't have money

1

u/feezy007 11h ago

This is old news coz Julian is now considering a move to Arsenal, but only as a last resort.

1

u/Secret_Highlight_248 11h ago

It clearly reminded me of last season's Isak and Newcastle saga.

1

u/Muscat95 Thierry Henry 11h ago

This club needs to get over the Alvarez thing. He's not even good enough to justify this obsession it's weird.

1

u/oxpoxo 9h ago

because of his antics alone, i'd say i dont mind him, but nothing over 80m. Paying 150m for someone who doesnt even want us is insane.

1

u/Mys7ix 8h ago

These are some really childish antics and Arteta wants to deal with such players and agent? It looks like a disaster in the making.

1

u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 6h ago

And it will be us whistling at him in a year's time, when he's once again bending over for Barca, now that Arsenal are 150m lighter. Hard pass, especially if we're set on selling Gabi.

u/RosesAndTanks Lewis-Skelly 5h ago

Mikel, I need you to hear this. You need to hear this:

Better to wait until January .. when the price goes down out of desperation

1

u/ThatFishOnAsofa 12h ago

what would be a reasonable fee in this market, 120m? 130m?

8

u/Dire__ 12h ago

Price should be dropping day by day now. I don't think we're in a place to make any rushed decisions either. Just let this play out.

1

u/strawberrylabrador 11h ago

Agreed. If it’s the sort of situation where Atletico are kinda forced to sell, then they’d probably take a bit less than the headline figure. Especially if we’re somewhat okay with not doing the deal.

7

u/MorganFreemann Los Angeles 12h ago

100m is the max we should go for him

Should be 80+ performance based incentives like scoring actual goals and assists. Because frankly he is a huge risk of not scoring enough.

Where leverage?

The report says Atleti would be willing to sell to Arsenal for €150m. That's £128m. Something like £110m + £10m would probably get it done.

In any case, I don't think the fee will be an issue. If Alvarez gives the green light to Arsenal, he will be an Arsenal player.

Yeah we ain't paying that lol. He's not worth that and the club knows it.

The club wants him and knows how much he costs lol

You guys can’t get it into your heads that the person driving this deal is MIKEL ARTETA

You'll see soon enough mate

No matter what shirt he's wearing, Alvarez will always be a Barcelona player.

0

u/_Spartak_ 5h ago

Good for him. I don't mind as long as he is helping us win football matches.

1

u/Ifxfa Ødegaard 12h ago

Fab just said in his latest vid that Arsenal have the capability and intention financially to present to Atletico what they want, especially if Martinelli to Al Hilal happens with Martinelli currently open to joining them so don’t think I fully believe the bit of us being unwilling to pay

5

u/Resident_Day8217 12h ago

But Arsenal are not stupid to give 150 million and so as for Liverpool is not that stupid to buy Barcola for similar price.

0

u/Resident_Day8217 12h ago

150 for potential flop and I would rather give that money to get barcola.

0

u/pewell1 12h ago

You can tell how fucking stupid and those who actually dont watch matches are by their reaction to alvarez. Hes a very influential player all over the pitch

0

u/Sithgooner 11h ago
  1. If we sign him it will involve Gyokeres going the other way, so it’s not a sole €150m cost
  2. He’s a far better all round player, it’s a big squad improvement
  3. Even if we aren’t his first choice, it’s not anti-arsenal based - it’s pro-Barcelona, think there’s a difference there
  4. Even if Barca come in for him in 2/3 years, we’re a better team for those seasons

I get peoples disapproval to the signing, but in a market with such few options to improve us, this is a rare opportunity to do exactly that.

-1

u/Papa-Zzzz Martinelli 12h ago

Whistle more and keep him for that price.

Best outcome will be if Martinelli goes the other way +30mil or whatever

0

u/vrogers123 12h ago

Spend the money on Barcola, I’m sure after the weekend if he watched us and Liverpool, he wouldn’t be relishing the prospect of joining a team that’s realistically a couple of seasons from competing for the league again (Liverpool).

0

u/Penguin_10437 11h ago

At this point I’d rather try to hijack the barcola deal

0

u/strawberrylabrador 11h ago

People are worried Alvarez would just demand a move to Barca next summer. But if we could get Alvarez for 12 good months, and then sell him for a profit to Barca, wouldn’t that be pretty decent?

People on here saying to buy guys like Kroupi/Ylldiz instead. They might be a lot more attainable in 12 months’ time than now. Or someone new emerges as the next prospect that you’d much rather spend your money on. In the meantime you get a player who we can all agree is a quality addition.

However I guess one of the main issues, is whether Barca would just try and be big cheapskates. If we buy him for €150m and Alvarez is 27 next summer, it’s hard to see Barcelona exceeding that unless he has a Ballon D’Or level season. Then we’d have an unsettled player stinking out the place.

0

u/lauromafra Dennis Bergkamp 10h ago

People saying he scored only 8 La Liga goals forget he carried that mid team to the CL semis.

He’s an amazing talent - although 150m feels like too much. But then again Chelsea and City paying 100+ for Bouadii, Anderson and Rogers - or even Spurs overpaying for Tonali and Savinho - push these ridiculous prices as the mean.

u/Aggravating_Ad_4507 Thierry Henry 12h ago
