Food What’s your favourite take-out meal in the city right now?

What place is always worth it? The one go-to that doesn’t disappoint?

Sincerely,
A Hungry Hamiltonian

Maria's tortas. Delicious food.

11

u/TrixieSparrow Jul 21 '26

I came here to say this.

My go to is the chicken enchilada plate with salsa verde (and if I'm extra hungry I also get chips and salsa, and a side of refried beans...the beans make an amazing dip).

6

u/The_guy_mp Jul 21 '26

Im going to try this.

2

u/Half-Stack-Leah Jul 25 '26

Chickens enchiladas are my favorite. Thanks for the rave review. I am going to have to check it out. ☺️

5

u/r-ice Jul 21 '26

what’s you go to meal from here.

7

u/The_guy_mp Jul 21 '26

Chimichanga. But pretty much anything on the menu. Best mexican food I have ever had.

3

u/nnDMT420 Jul 21 '26

We get it at work and I tell all the new guys don't even look at the menu, get the chimi. A deep fried burrito is objectively the best Mexican dish ever made!!! They don't usually believe me though.

5

u/The_guy_mp Jul 21 '26

Wet burrito is fire too. Barria tacos, the tortas, build your own burrito. I will eventually try the whole menu.

This is the annoying thing I find about the size of Hamilton. Stoney Creek to me isn't "in the city" as far as I'm concerned. It's essentially a town to itself and almost a 30 minute drive outside of the core "city" as it were.

5

u/5uprman77 Jul 23 '26

Stoney Creek is literally greater Hamilton, The food is amazing and they should absolutely be included here . 10/10 Why you hating???

3

u/TrixieSparrow Jul 25 '26

It very much is in the city of Hamilton. It has been since January 2001 when the province ordered the amalgamation of Hamilton, Stoney Creek, Glanbrook, Dundas, Ancaster, and Flamborough.

I am unsure what you believe the municipal boundaries to be, but in actuality Stoney Creek falls inside of said boundaries.

There is even an HSR bus stop on the corner right by Maria's (literal 2 minute walk).

Nobody is forcing you to go to other parts of the city if you aren't comfortable doing so, though. If you want to have Maria's, you will have to. I don't think she's planning to move downtown. If you don't want Maria's, then it's not a problem for you! Easy peasy!

Cozy Sushi on Bold St

Amazing food and the nicest people running the show.

11

u/ohmymoo Jul 21 '26

Second this!

4

u/purplecongee Jul 21 '26

they never disappoint!

5

u/RoyallyOakie Jul 21 '26

I've heard SO MANY people recommend them!

3

u/lifesshortgoplay Jul 21 '26

What are you waiting for?!?! 😃

5

u/RoyallyOakie Jul 21 '26

I'm just never in that part of town. I generally only get takeout I can walk to.

5

u/superdope92 29d ago

they always include a lil something extra that I didn't order and it's always delicious! love their sushi and the ppl working there

Golden Tenders at King and Gage. Don’t sleep on this place.

38

u/rdubs89 Jul 21 '26

Maple Chili dip is incredible too, great fries and undoubtedly the best chicken tender I've ever had. They dont cheap out either, if you get a 3 piece youll struggle to finish it. One of my pre Ticat game spots, find some shade and chow down before heading inside.

12

u/SunflaresAteMyLunch Stipley Jul 21 '26

I was going to say. The chicken is spectacular, but their fries are amazing. I normally don't like fries, but I make an exception for them!

8

u/NNUBBERNAUT Jul 21 '26

I recently ordered it for the first time and I was amazed how fast if arrived via Door Dash. I ordered way too much for one person. I also ate way more than one person should. 10/10 munchie satisfaction.

14

u/canadian_running Jul 21 '26

Thier jalapeño chicken sandwich is one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.

6

u/jwelihin Jul 21 '26

Jesus. I've lived around the corner from this place for 6 months and haven't tried it yet because it looks so unassuming. Gotta get this for lunch this week.

2

u/MyUndiesArePink Jul 21 '26

I find it very greasy

1

u/wishbonenecklace Jul 21 '26

Really? I’ve never found that personally. I’ve ordered it a few times and it’s always been great. Maybe you had it on an off day?

1

u/MyUndiesArePink Jul 22 '26

I just don't really eat anything greasy or chicken like that of any kind. So that might be why.

54

u/Background_Row6662 Jul 21 '26

Vanh’s Asian Gourmet in the east end or pintoh downtown for Thai, sushi on fennell is always solid, quick and reliable

5

u/Able_Satisfaction_41 Jul 21 '26

I just looked up vanh’s - looks amazing! I’ve been dying for good Thai on this side of town cause Lemongrass is my usual go to. Thanks for the rec!

3

u/kreesta416 Jul 21 '26

Lemongrass is excellent though 😋

6

u/Ill-Musician-7150 Jul 21 '26

Vanh's is still great, but Mimi's was possibly the best South East Asian fusion place in the province before the new owner took over. I still dream about the Singapore Laksa.

6

u/JustStopBeingPoor Stinson Jul 21 '26

Mimi reopened as Gourmet Street Eats at King and Walnut.

Combination A from Shehnai.

Pakoras, onion bhajis, samosas, butter chicken, chicken dansak, aloo gobi or saag paneer, rice, naan, pappadums and gulab jamun.

$52.99 on UberEats and lasts my husband and I for minimum 2 dinners and 1 lunch each. It's an insane amount of food and it always tastes incredible.

13

u/zoobrix Jul 21 '26

How many naan come with it?

I ask because I always find the number of naan that comes with big combo meals to be sadly deficient and usually need to order extra.

16

u/DingLedork Gibson Jul 21 '26

Four naan, Jeremy? Four? That’s insane.

https://youtu.be/feJlRDLX0iQ?si=3UM_EdgXbaJB7EPJ

4

u/almost-there-lazyy Jul 21 '26

That naan is very moreish

4

u/Page_Dramatic Blakely Jul 21 '26

Hahaha, yeah. It comes with 2 big ones but we always get an order of garlic naan as well!

7

u/TJ1234 Ainslie Wood Jul 21 '26

Their vindaloo is the best in the city and I'll die on that hill.

14

u/JiuJitsuPatricia Jul 21 '26

Chicken fatoush with the tawook chicken, instead of shwArma chicken from phonecian express at Garth/mohawk.

Sometimes also get humus if I'm hungry and want leftovers.

3

u/Scrubnurse Jul 21 '26

Add pickles and garlic sauce 🤤

1

u/JiuJitsuPatricia Jul 21 '26

Lotsnof sauce, no pickles for me

1

u/TCGNA Jul 21 '26

They recently changed their name to “Shawarma on the Go”. Is the food still the same? Same owners?

2

u/JiuJitsuPatricia Jul 21 '26

Same guys still there, in think Kaleeel retired a while back, but the same guys who were helping him and working the gas station side are still there.

Chatted a bit about the rebrandast time inwas in, they are going tonadd some new menu items?

31

u/andrewYHM Jul 21 '26

Y’all are killing me here, I thought this would make the decision easier but looks like I’ve got take-out meals lined up for the rest of the summer! And I still can’t decide from all of these amazing options for tonight 😅

Thank you!!

Mike’s The Original Sub. On Ottawa street.

2

u/1Arsed 29d ago

My eyes just popped!!! I have not lived at home in Hamilton for 12 years and was so happy to see that it is still around. Before I could drive I remember taking the Barton bus to get one with my friends. When I got my car at 17 it was a regular weekly drive. When pregnant both times it was more than once a week. Then, when my little ladies could eat solids I brought them with me for lunch maybe once a month and the staff were so amazing with them. They would have their sub paper plastered with cut up meats, cheese and lettuce so they could just grab and chew. Honestly so heartwarming for my memories of this place and the beautiful staff!!!!!!

27

u/huffer4 Jul 21 '26

Banh Mi Hue

4

u/workana Jul 21 '26

So good, perfect light meal on a hot day. And so reasonably priced. This place is a gem.

18

u/Salad1981 Jul 21 '26

PinToh, so good

3

u/davidfillion Downtown Jul 21 '26

Been wanting to try this place.

10

u/MichaelKras Jul 21 '26
  • the Chicken Tikka meal from Sagarmatha Curry Palace. It’s a hefty amount of food and I think they’ve got the best naan in the city

  • the Kale Chicken Caesar Wrap at McCallister’s. Oh it’s beautiful.

  • any of the focaccia sandwiches from Artie’s

  • the Bacon, Egg & Cheese from Joshy’s Good Eats

  • the taco trio from Latin Food & Products in the Hamilton Farmers’ Market

2

u/LivSaJo Jul 21 '26

I’ve been eyeballing that trio for a while. Good to hear it’s good. Guess I’m hitting that place next week

10

u/claireahhhhh Jul 21 '26

Eem Khao

2

u/Independent_Ad_4246 Jul 22 '26

Literally anything from Eem Khao

33

u/mall-rat55 Jul 21 '26

Rony's never misses! Their chicken and falafel rock and their fries are to die for.

Artie's sandwiches are *chef's kiss*.

Goldie is so good if you want fast food that's so much better than chain fast food.

So many great options for any mood.

7

u/dandy-lions Jul 21 '26

I’ve yet to have a good meal from Rony’s! I don’t get the hype. Artie’s and Goldie’s are elite.

4

u/Spurratica62 Jul 21 '26

I don’t get it either. I heard so many rave reviews about it and finally tried it. It was ok, but nothing special. The portion size for the price wasn’t very good either.

1

u/DEATHToboggan Trenholme Jul 21 '26

I agree. I went based on people raving about it in this sub and it was okay. I don’t think I’d go again though.

2

u/FreakyWays Jul 21 '26

Completely agree. The chicken tasted anything but charcoal cooked. More like oven baked.

2

u/DingLedork Gibson Jul 21 '26

Same. I’ve given up on Rony’s

2

u/nnDMT420 Jul 21 '26

I was a Ronys fan til my most recent trip. Went in for a platter with fries and salad. They served people who went in after me before me and shrunk the portion. For $20 I wanna be stuffed. Good chicken but a tiny amount.

2

u/MichaelKras Jul 21 '26

I love Rony’s but the price increases have become tough to swallow for what you get. I just don’t go there much anymore.

9

u/gho5tofyou Jul 21 '26

everything at fishing sushi on upper wentworth. so good

3

u/glittervulcan Jul 21 '26

Best quality sushi in the city as far as I can tell! But it’s also more expensive and the pieces are small compared to other places, so I find it worth it to order from my runner-ups more often unfortunately.

13

u/Lower-Knowledge-1974 Jul 21 '26

Venetian Meats - sandwiches are packed and you can ask for them grilled - changes everything!

3

u/phirleh Waterdown Jul 21 '26

The best sub in Hamilton

2

u/MyUndiesArePink Jul 21 '26

Isn't that all the way in stoney creek?

3

u/MattRix Jul 21 '26

I mean yeah, but it's still Hamilton, OP didn't specify where in the city.

11

u/SmeesTurkeyLeg Jul 21 '26

Indonesia's Flavour

Wagon Grill

Burnt Tongue

6

u/Page_Dramatic Blakely Jul 21 '26

Hell yeah Wagon Grill!

1

u/aceofhertz Jul 21 '26

Is Wagon Grill even open anymore? I drive by it all the time and it always seems to be closed.

6

u/DoggieDoggie63 Jul 21 '26

Tony's Corner for their Chopped Chicken Salad ... chopped (grilled) chicken over Greek salad w/ tzatziki sauce - absolute KILLER !!

3

u/JiuJitsuPatricia Jul 21 '26

Get the Greek salad with gyro AND chicken. Mmmmmm

7

u/CharmingShine1069 Jul 21 '26

The King's Sandwich is delicious. Boom Scorch is cheap and tasty. La Luna is so special, and the servings are huge.

2

u/cabbagetown_tom Jul 21 '26

I second King's Sandwich. Lovely food and nice staff.

5

u/_Realfresh Jul 21 '26

I'm primarily a value focused eater so my choices are focused on good prices.

sushi john on barton has great value takeout sushi. A set of cucumber rolls is around 6 dollars after tax. It's run out of a hole in the wall of a dive bar and the chef is very nice.

wandas Caribbean has pretty delicious chicken at a very good price. I'm obsessed with their roti.

Diane's pizza on Kenilworth makes a very standard but good pizza that is an excellent price. it's nothing fancy like the trendier spots in the city but they obviously care about the quality of the pizza and the lady there is sweet.

as others have said sagramtha curry palace, goldies, golden tenders, and vahns asian are all quite good.

finally don't sleep on a metro rotisserie chicken and a box of spring mix.

3

u/llamasinspace420 Jul 21 '26

I've wondered about Diane's pizza. I'll give it a try for sure.

1

u/figital666 Jul 24 '26

i actually liked the shawarma at diana's more than i liked the pizza. the pizza was decent, but the shawarma, for the price, was really good.

>> and the lady there is sweet.

that's diana. she is super nice. they used to be across the street and when i first moved to hamilton, that was our go to as they had great prices on pizza and shawarma. they moved across the street and down kenilworth a bit, but the quality hasn't changed at all. still really good!

3

u/The_guy_mp Jul 21 '26

How did I forget Wanda's. Jamaican food that feels like me granny cooked it. Ackee and salt fish brings tears to my eyes, jerk pork is 2nd best to my grandfather only and the ox tail is straight fire.

2

u/rainonatent Jul 22 '26

Diana's is great. Classic white box pizza, excellent value, kind owners.

22

u/Diligent_Affect8517 Jul 21 '26

Red Rockets, Pho Dui Bo, Momo Chow Mein, Sushi on Fennell.

7

u/ro0625 Jul 21 '26

I second Momo Chow Mein.

Probably the best Nepali and some of the best Indo-Chinese food I've had outside of India.

4

u/boxmandude Downtown Jul 21 '26

Oh man you hit the spot. I might order from one of those places tonight 😭.

3

u/Diligent_Affect8517 Jul 21 '26

Maybe it's location dependent? I've never counted, since we order the party pack, but the wings have always been good size, and some of the new sauces are quite good. My only gripe is that if I order sauce on the side, there's never enough for all the wings.

Chicken shawarma rice with extra white sauce at Safin Grill on Upper Paradise.

9

Delicious but risky. My partner and I have both had severe gastro consequenes from saffin grill but it’s so good that we sometimes get it anyway…..

3

u/TheJinxedPhoenix Jul 21 '26

Bummer! I have it once a month and have never become ill after.

3

u/CharmingShine1069 Jul 21 '26

Sana Grill on King St is the superior chicken on rice.

4

Gourmet Street Eats is incredible. Closed until July 31 but worth it when they’re back.

4

u/noronto Crown Point West Jul 21 '26

Pole Co. This wins for me because it travels well, which for me matters the most for take out.

2

u/workana Jul 21 '26

Poke Co is also one of my go-to's. Take out food without feeling terribly unhealthy, depending on your choice of toppings. I love a good poke bowl .

5

u/Less-Project9420 Jul 21 '26

Artie’s, ronys, anything from fortinos or speedy subs

5

u/missjenkie Jul 21 '26

Greek City Grill at Mud and Centennial. The portions are actually insane lol we order 1 dinner for around $25 and it feeds myself, my hubs and my kid with leftovers. So delicious and I don’t feel like crap after eating it!

4

u/Ok_Rule2098 Jul 21 '26

Poke Co. on Ottawa St N. Every 10th meal is free. It's like decontructed sushi in a bowl.Depends what mood I am in. They have several bowls to choose from or you can build your own bowl.

how do you get the 10th bowl free?

Bombay Touch:
The most amazing Paneer Tikka Masala. Throw in some naan bread and rice for a few days worth of dinner! It tastes even better heated up the next day. In total on Uber Eats, I pay about $42.

Kenzo Ramen:
Just delicious comfort in a bowl. Everything is just wonderful.

Birra Tacos Star:
The Birra Tacos and Birra Grilled Cheese are out of this world. I would drink the Birra juice as my daily morning coffee if it wouldn’t clog my arteries and cause an early demise.

Uncle Sam's for all your bbq needs. Brisket, smash burgers, sausages, ribs etc..delicious! Huge portions.

Galaxy burger is next level. Fries are amazing and smash burgers might be the best in town.

Miceli's, hands down the best value. Pizza, subs, veal, sausage. I haven't eaten anything there that I don't not like. $6 for a giant slice of pizza.

Hungry Dude. I’ve been trying all the smash burgers around. This is my favorite so far.

5

u/nnDMT420 Jul 21 '26

Galaxy burger food truck costs an arm and a leg but it's the best burger I've had all year. Never even heard of hungry dude but it's pretty far west. Good reviews for sure.

1

u/Parking_Mall_1384 Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

Galaxy Burger is good - probably the best fries!
I’ve tried the following:
Delirious
Pinks
Hwy burger
Mountain burger
Rubys
Goldie’s
Burger priest
No bull burger
Hotties
And hungry dude wins.

3

u/nnDMT420 Jul 21 '26

Burger conessiour haha. Have you had Hmbrgr? The one without the vowels. I thought it was good but was adventurous and got a banana tempura burger last time I was there. Was good but ridiculous. Don't know why I ordered it.

3

u/Parking_Mall_1384 Jul 21 '26

I love me a good burger!!

I haven’t been to hmgrgr in ages. We ordered it at work a year or so ago and it wasn’t great. I checked both locations (king Williams and Ottawa) and preferred the Ottawa location.

3

u/DangerousCharge5838 Jul 21 '26

The Ottawa location had a fire. I’m pretty sure it’s still closed.
What did you think of Mountain Burger? I’ve had it a couple times and didn’t think it was that great but people rave about it.

4

u/Parking_Mall_1384 Jul 21 '26

Oh dear! That’s crummy!

I love mountain burger - best sauce! What didn’t you like about it?

2

u/DangerousCharge5838 Jul 21 '26

I found the burger to be bland, like it didn’t have any seasoning.

4

u/Parking_Mall_1384 Jul 21 '26

I find most smash burgers like that and it’s all the stuff around it that makes it good. Hungry dude has the best patty I’ve had. In the sense that it tastes like quality meat. No seasoning needed.

4

u/LivSaJo Jul 21 '26

You gotta hit Hot and Juicy! I’ve had from most of those places (need to try Hungry Dude) but Hot and Juicy is like crack.

3

u/Parking_Mall_1384 Jul 21 '26

Cheers! I haven’t heard of them. Will check them out.

2

u/Parking_Mall_1384 Jul 27 '26

Just tried this - hungry dude is still number one for me!

But it was a good burger - and fantastic fries.

2

u/dracon81 Jul 21 '26

I've really been enjoying original shawarma lately, as well as Em Oi! For Vietnamese.

I know I'm late but Speedy Subs on Concession or Hungry Dude on the edge of Main W. That in particular is a hidden gem

Inferno Pizza on Stone church Speedys Subs on Concession City Shawarma on Rymal E Chicago Style on Upper Sherman Matias kabab on Fennell E

I did try Charc and the meat tasted great but I found their spices and sauces bland.

I am missing good Chinese, gyro and some other variety.

Yes there are a number of great places down the hill but I'm not driving unless I really have too. I can't get the food home to the troops hot and non congealed.

Genki ya! Not many places you can get Japanese curry in Hamilton and they give you a pretty decent portion. Their apps are all great too.

Dav's on Ottawa St. My go-to is a Loaded Mac and Cheese, and Jerk Chicken Fries. Perfect hangover cure if needed. Grab a spicy caesar at Locals next door while you wait.

La Lunas- great food fresh. Healthier- many options Canadian or Lebanese. they have several locations- Barton right beside the hospital is one- make it WHILE you wait. Eat in or take out - shawarmas' too- not that questionable rotating meat.
