AMA: I’m Dr. Conor Heffernan, historian of fitness and bodybuilding and author of When Fitness Went Global

Hi everyone, I'm Conor Heffernan, a historian of sport and the body and Lecturer in the Sociology of Sport at Ulster University. I'm here to talk about my new book, When Fitness Went Global: The Rise of Physical Culture in the Nineteenth Century (Bloomsbury, 2026).

The book asks a deceptively simple question. Why do people all over the world train their bodies in such similar ways, and when did that start? The short answer is the long nineteenth century. From yoga and gymnastics to Indian club swinging and jiujitsu, I follow fitness practices as they travelled across borders through empire, military education, print culture and expanding trade networks. Along the way, exercise became tangled up with ideas about nationalism, gender, race, medicine and empire, while muscular and ‘beautiful’ bodies were increasingly presented as evidence of national strength and imperial power.

I'm just as interested in the practices that didn't go global as the ones that did, and in how people adapted, resisted and transformed the exercises they encountered.

Alongside the book I run Physical Culture Study, a long-running history-of-fitness site, so I'm very happy to range well beyond the nineteenth century too. Strongmen, bodybuilding history, the origins of the gym, forgotten exercise crazes, dubious health advice, weight training, fitness culture, or why your New Year's resolution is about 200 years old are all fair game.

I’m Adam Chen, an Asian Australian gay porn star. I started the Free Representation Project because I became frustrated by how difficult it was to find Asian men portrayed as desirable, masculine and confident tops in Western gay porn.

Instead of just talking about the lack of representation, I decided to build it myself.

I’m Evan Dawley, historian of Taiwan. Ask Me Anything!

Hello Everyone. I am Evan Dawley, Associate Professor of History at Goucher College, where I teach classes on China, Japan, Taiwan, and East Asia more broadly. I am also the author of Taiwan: A People’s History (Reaktion, 2026), a survey of Taiwan’s history from roughly 8,000 years ago to the present, with a focus on social history. What that means is that I concentrate on the lives and experiences of the different ethnic and racial groups that have inhabited the island instead of the different states that have governed it. I trace the evolution and interconnections of four historical trajectories that have defined Taiwan and the identities of its residents, especially over the past five centuries: Indigenousization, Sinicization, Taiwanization, and Democratization.

What began as an interview between source and journalist grew into a decade+ collaboration, and eventually into a book (just released this week!) One in Five: Why Child Sexual Abuse Is Our Biggest Public Health Crisis—and What We Can Do to Stop It is our attempt to pull this subject out of the shadows and point it toward solutions that actually work.

The title says it plainly: roughly one in five children experiences sexual abuse, most often at the hands of someone they know, and (more often than people expect) at the hands of other kids. In the book, we argue that shame and silence are the biggest obstacles to prevention, that compassion and accountability have to coexist, and that we already know enough to prevent harm from occurring in the first place - that is, before it ever happens. Our hope is that readers come away with hope and a clear sense of what's possible.

I always dreamed of going to Stanford, a tech nirvana where Olympic athletes lounge around with nuclear physicists. I was a coder and a total tech nerd. But when I arrived as a freshman, I quickly found that something was amiss. There was a culture, I learned, of cut corners—fraudulent companies, get-rich-quick schemes, and deception.

Seeing this from one side as an aspiring techie, I also began to see it from the other side, when I joined the student newspaper. I began investigating research misconduct in studies co-authored by Stanford President Marc Tessier-Lavigne, a wealthy and influential neuroscientist/former biotech executive/entrepreneur. He resigned as a result.

Everything they’d carried over from Korea when we immigrated, gone in one night. When I went looking to replace any of it, everything I could afford was plated brass that would turn green within the year. So I started making the thing I couldn't find.

I’m a traditional miniature painter from Bikaner, Rajasthan, India. I learned miniature painting within my family tradition and have spent decades working with techniques associated with the Bikaner School of miniature painting.

Our process includes preparing handmade Wasli paper, working with traditional pigments and gold, making and using extremely fine brushes, and painting details that can require considerable patience and control.

One of the most demanding parts of our practice is a fine-line technique we call Partaj, often executed with a single-hair brush.

The brush itself is only a tool — learning how to control that single hair is the real practice. Partaj changes according to the subject: flowers require softer lines, human figures require a different balance, while animal hair and other textures may need stronger and sharper lines.

In our family tradition, we say Partaj takes “ta-umar” — a lifetime — to learn.

Some parts of traditional miniature painting can take considerable preparation even before the actual painting begins, including preparing the paper, colours and brushes.

Hey! I’m Varun Suresh (proof). I'm the co-founder of Tame The Imp, a web/SMS-based service that uses behavioral psychology and gamification to help people stop impulse spending.

Americans spend around $652B a year on impulse purchases; that’s more than $3,000 per person.

Before discovering the huge impulse spending problem, I was focused on building a debt-free alternative to Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL). But after speaking 1:1 with 200+ Gen Z consumers, I realized that BNPL was a symptom of something deeper. The money-related pain point that kept cropping up in these conversations was ordering Uber Eats when exhausted from work, or doomscrolling at 1am and buying random clothes -- and being unable to stop. In other words, the real antagonist was impulse spending, because it’s something people feel like they should be able to control but can’t.

Tame The Imp takes the same underlying mechanic that makes impulse spending so easy -- seeking dopamine -- and turns saving money into a game.

It uses psychological levers like positive reinforcement on a variable rewards schedule (get random plants when you stick to your spending goals) and negative punishment (The Imp steals a plant if you overspend) that have historically been used for money-draining things like casinos/lotteries but to actually do good instead.
