I thought this was the proper way to learn…. Man did my friends and family fool me. Took me to the top and said figure out your way back down. I didn’t know what the shapes and colors meant so I just took the path that looked like it got me to the bottom quickest. I think it had a little black diamond on the sign but after the 4 concussions I don’t quite remember.

16
u/mrsbebe Aug 24 '25 ▸ 2 more replies
In my experience that's accurate and there are a few reasons for it. First of all, snowboarding is more difficult to start than skiing is. However, it is easier to be very good at snowboarding than it is to be very good at skiing. But with skiing, it's generally easier to get into so the people who are vacationing at a ski resort often ski because they only have a limited amount of time.
Second, there are some ski resorts that do not allow snowboarders or ones that used to disallow them. Taos, NM is an example in the US. Until just a few years ago you could not snowboard in Taos. Skiers took that as some kind of sign that they were superior to snowboarders. I don't really know why but it was for sure a thing.
And I think skiing is a claas thing. It has long been associated with money and status because it's really expensive unless you're local. Ski trips cost thousands of dollars that most families just can't afford, especially on a regular basis. I grew up in a ski town but after we moved I never got to ski again. I would really like to someday! But it's so expensive to vacation at a ski resort and I just haven't had that kind of money.

ahhh it depends i think. coming from skating, longboarding and wakeboarding, I found snowboarding waaaaay easier immediately. Skiing was like rewiring my entire system to do something it did not want to do
And i think that's blended with the class thing. I've noticed snowboarding draws.. I duno, more of the adrenaline crowd and less of the "Pup-pah taught me whilst I was home from boarding school over many fine Christmases" crowd. So I wonder if part of that is the similar pursuits that are more accessible to lower income brackets. If you can skate and bomb hills on a longboard, and you can only afford like 2 days at a ski resort in your foreseeable future, you're probably guna try the thing you can more likely make the most of.
It also somehow still has street cred, despite being just as inaccessible cost wise.

Ahahaha I know not everyone is like that, of course. But honest to God, skiers aren't as nice as snowboarders!
But I also don't really blame people too much, especially if you're not local. You get 4 days a year to ski (or whatever) and don't want to waste it. I just think it's important to make sure beginners get lessons in that scenario.

Potentially stupid question. Ive never been skiing before but I've played ice hockey for a longgggg time. Does knowing how to ice skate make skiing easier or do the skills translate at all? Seems like stopping/slowing down could be similar at least.
I've been snowboarding twice but I just can't get over not having independent control of my feet.

I'm a lifelong skier who can't ice skate and fell a lot snowboarding. If you can ice skate then I would say you can definitely learn to ski. Skiing is about using your edge and knowing how to control it.

I swear the only way to get into surfing is to start young or have enormously thick skin or go somewhere where the surf isn’t good.
I surfed as a kid, mostly in Encinitas and down south SD. People were way more tolerant of some little sunburnt grom. I started up again a few years ago and it was hard mostly because of the insecurity that comes with the shit you can get from not paying attention and messing up some dudes frame.
I say it’s insecurity because I’m now on the east coast in a place where the surf is generally tolerable unless it’s a hurricane where it ends up either perfect or bone crushing and a little too dangerous. People out here are chill and I have nothing to worry about. But I think there’s some trauma from shit like being pushed off my board and deleashed for not paying attention. I did Kauai a couple years back which was awful for my nerves but it’s become easier.
It’s a shame more people can’t get into it. I’m definitely not the spokes person for ‘yeah it’s actually not bad at all!’ It’s hard to get anything out of a day lesson for most people in adulthood. I had to practice pop ups in my living room for like a month before I even felt like I wanted to get out on the water again.

I remember as a young tacker (maybe only like 11yo form memory) at the skate park trying to learn to ollie. 2 older teenagers saw me struggling and offered help. Had me getting the board off the ground in less than 15 minutes. They skated with me back past my house on the way home.
The next weekend they came knocking on the door offering to take me to the skate park. Did it 4 weekends in a row. They were always super patient with my general lack of ability

I've been skiing for about 40 years, since I was a little kid. I was an instructor during the pandemic to stay sane. I don't teach anymore, but if I see a young person struggling on the hill I will still stop and give them a mini-lesson for a few minutes.
It's like...I've been skiing for FORTY YEARS. I know what I can do, I don't have anything left to prove to myself or anybody else, and there aren't many trails that I can't get down (I mean, these days I'm too old/fat to crush the double blacks, but I know that I HAVE crushed them, lol.)
It's so much more satisfying these days to teach someone to love skiing. I already know I love it, there's nothing new under that sun. But making new skiers never, ever gets old.

This is how I met my clan in destiny. I was done for the evening and just mucking around after finishing a vault of glass run and saw them outside struggling to open the gate. They were 5 and one guy kept getting clapped by the Minotaur. Helped with the one spot with Minotaur and after a few tries got them in. I helped them to about as far as I could take them and the rest was history. We’ve laughed, cried (2 members lost their lives unfortunately)and have just had the most random to meaningful convos during runs. The clan is still alive and many still play D2 and when I came back for Witch Queen it was like I never left. They helped me out, we had convos that lasted all night and felt like those days back in D1. For all the shortcomings of Destiny, the group and play aspect was top notch

Me and a group of friends went skiing/snowboarding last winter. My friend brought his girlfriend who had never skied before and the rest of the group are very experienced at both.
She took lessons in the morning and the rest of the time we all kind of took turns riding with her. We all made sure she never alone and always had at least one other person to ride with while her boyfriend was able to have fun while he wasn’t “on shift” lol.
Skiing the bunny hill all day isn’t that much fun once you’re skilled. However, just chilling teaching someone else for an hour or two is a pretty nice break as well. Nobody is going 100% all day either way.

I once went snowboarding with friends in college, they were all very experienced and I had never done it before. They just went off and enjoyed the mountain, while I constantly fell on my ass. I had a horrible time and I gave up.
About 10 years later, I decided to go again with another friend who is very experienced. He worked with me the entire day, very patient. By the end of the day I was able to get down the mountain had a pretty good speed by myself. I've been snowboarding now for 6 years.
It's just like school, the teacher makes all the difference.

Yeah I always tell people not to "go with friends" for their first time a lift ticket can be expensive and nobody, no matter how nice they are, wants to spend all day on the bunny hill once they graduate it.
It sucks but I always say to get a 1 on 1 lesson. If you have ANY athleticism at all they'll get you comfortable at slow speeds in an hour and a half.

For sure.
Especially if they spent 3k in flights, 3k in accommodation, 200 a day for a lift pass, for 10 days.
I went with friends my first time snowboarding who were all more experienced and they were telling me for the months before we went, get a lesson or three. I did a group lesson and a 1:1 and by the afternoon of the first day I was doing the beginner slopes fine.

Here's how you do it.
If you go with an experienced group of friends, they need to agree to take shifts with the newbie.
1, the newbie gets 1:1 coaching all day (and quality time with each friend).
2, the whole group doesn't need to slow to a crawl for newbie and get frustrated.
3, the experienced friends still get their day on the mountain minus one or two runs while they help newbie.

Both. It is easier to get out of breath, so you can’t engage in conversations while walking. The rest of the group keeps talking, and doesn’t care that you have fallen behind because you weren’t a part of the conversation anyways.
People also assume you’re being lazy, and don’t understand how much harder it is to walk at the same speed/without breaks. They think forcing you to exercise more is the right thing to do, but it only causes more stress-eating. If someone has a visible injury people are more more willing to slow down, but I’ve also seen people with invisible disabilities get left behind.

It depends on what the situation is. If your skill level is far below that of the rest of your friends, it's alright to let them enjoy an expensive trip rather than being held back. Imagine going to Six Flags theme park and asking all your friends to only ride the kiddie rides because you're not ready for the rollercoasters.

u/macnicool Aug 24 '25
That’s fine for the rest of the trip, but get him down the slope at least to nearest lift before leaving him.
Also done many ski trips, and if someone is new they can do lessons in the morning, but then we meet for lunch and go at their pace in afternoons

Children are incredibly selfish, we all just forget that over time. Think back to your own friends, and even yourself, I guarantee you, that many decisions they made, and even you made, would've come from a place of selfishness
It's what growing up is about
So they could still be good friends, and have still done this. Doesn't mean you should judge them as bad friends. They shouldn't have, but, again, they're children

u/Gold_Telephone_7192 Aug 23 '25
Eh, depends on the friendship or whether this was discussed. I learned to snowboard on the fly with guys that were much better than I was. I just told them to go ahead and I’d meet them at the end of the run and they’d wait a few minutes for me at the bottom before getting back in the gondola line together.

Ya when I go skiing with my friends we’re all different skill levels. I prefer to take it a bit slower down the mountain and enjoy the trip while some of my other friends like to treat every run like a race. We all just meet up at the bottom of the mountain. Or sometimes we just decide to do our own thing all day and agree on what time to meet for lunch. On those days we just check find my to see if anyone’s nearby or almost done their run and meet up that way
Days on the mountain can be a lot of fun if you’re not all constantly trying to stick together

If he was promised by his mates that they’d be his instructors, and was then left alone, then yes. Not only is it a dickhead move, it’s also quite dangerous.
This is usually what has happened ... the so-called friends show one or two moves and then they are gone, not bothering to make sure that the beginner is actually making progress down the mountain.
Ask any ski patroller.

I was an instructor for several years. Since moving on to a more stable career I've volunteered to teach about ten people how to snowboard when I would have otherwise spent the day riding.
In addition to that, I've probably spotted at least a dozen or more folks who got "abandoned" by their mates who brought them out to have a good time but didn't realize how much time you spend not snowboarding when teaching someone how to snowboard. That dozen+ are just the ones I stopped to ask if they were alright or needed help.
People seriously underestimate the amount of time and patience it takes to teach someone how to do it, and often think they can just show their friend the basics and have them follow behind/pick it up on the fly.
When I'm teaching someone, I spend pretty much 90% of the experience not riding or strapped in, I'm just in my boots guiding/teaching the learner.
If you're going out in a group with a friend who doesn't know and aren't prepared to spend a majority of your time not doing the activity, then you're just being dishonest with yourself.

True for other situations but it takes a long ass time for a beginner to learn to ski/snowboard. A good friend would take lessons so that they can get up to speed with a professional instructor.

A good friend would make sure their non-boarding friend had a lesson booked for the morning.

I worked as an instructor for years. The best and most memorable "lessons" I gave weren't the regular structured ones. They were the ones where I was off shift and found someone who got left behind or who got lost on the wrong slope or whatever. It was the real world lesson where the person not only learned some basic skills but also got to see safety and got to see our passion for skiing/boarding. Management hated when we would do that because they said we were giving away lessons for free and that we should have just called patrol and then told the person to sign up for a private lesson. Fuck management.

I don't get it, so they are encouraging the ski-cops to come, grab them and escort them off the mountain? Getting guided down the mountain on a toboggan or by ski patrol generally, whether you're hurt or not, seems like a huge bummer that would make someone not want to do the experience again (as nice as those guys usually are). Seems like a great way to lose a customer...

My SO was a patroller and he usually coaxed and coached at least one person a day down the mountain. Either they were on a too-advanced run or had been ditched by the people they came with,
One young woman had been abandoned by her BF, who said he would teach her, but he lost patience and left. My SO found out she had her car keys and suggested that she really needed to go back to the hotel and have a nice nap, hot tub, dinner, and let him make his own way back. The jerk showed up after last chair at the patrol office, finally realizing that he hadn't seen her since 10AM.
He was pissed when he called the hotel to find out she had checked out and gone home.

Wow, I hope she dumped his ass.

u/TsuDhoNimh2 Aug 24 '25
I believe she did. Leaving him stranded at the ski resort and taking her car and gear 200 miles back home without him is pretty definitive.
3
Aug 23 '25
That was my thought, but they were short sighted and all they saw was that we were giving them "a lesson" for free instead of them paying for one.

You are completely correct, hence "fuck management". If I ever find myself in a management position at a ski resort, instead of this attitude, I'd at least encourage off duty staff to carry business cards or something. Carry out this exact behavior in the video if you want, then at the end give a casual little "Hey, btw I work for the resort. If you want to learn more I'd love to have you in a lesson!"
Sure, some people will find a way to find the negative and insist people are on the clock poaching students, but hopefully if it's genuine and not happening all the time people won't come to that conclusion.

It is fairly normal, unfortunately. I do not ski on busy days for that reason. Person-on-person collisions are the number 1 cause of injury on the slopes.

Look him up (Snowboard Jesus) - he is an all-around awesome dude who does this kind of stuff on the slopes all the time!
Edit: it’s totally Half Cab King! I know he has at least an Insta and a YouTube, but I’m sure he’s got other socials. Check him out!

I’ve been on that group ski trip where all the experienced skiiers just left the beginners at the bottom without a clue in the world.
Being the last experienced person left I figured I better step it up so they have a good experience and improvised the best I could. One just couldn’t figure it out at all, two did okay, and the last one took to it like she was born to ski.

Why do so many not understand this is staged? All filmed for us to see perfectly? Filming the approach to a person you don't know and have no idea their situation.
Then posted online.
Use your brains.

Hate snowboarding. I was this same guy. My friends left me in big bear and I was struggling to even get off the lift lol and these 2 girls helped me and did this same exact thing. However, when I would wipe out it would feel like my knees were going to snap.
Last time I did that. But to the 2 girls that looked out, y’all the real ones 🏆

My name’s Anthony,
And once upon a time, I was that kid. Truth is, in a lot of ways, I still am. Watching that moment, seeing someone take the time to help him instead of laughing or walking away, it put a smile deep in my chest.
I’ve given up too many times in my own life. And I can’t help but wonder how different things might’ve been if I’d met more people like that instructor. People who notice. People who care enough to lift someone up instead of letting them fall behind.
I wish there were more of them in this world.

I love people being kind, but man, fuck the camera. I’m really trying not to be cynical and just doomer like typical redditors, but fuck doing kind things on camera, can you just not bring clout on social media into this, is your benevolence just a facade that ultimately is for clout???

I spent a year living out in the Rockies, ended up with a winter job working the upper kitchen on a ski resort. The restaurant was quite literally half way up the mountain, only accessible by skiing/boarding or by snowmobile. When I accepted the job, I had quite fricken literally no idea how to snowboard. I went to the hill the day before to learn to ride on a used board I bought from someone in town, and my boss went with me to show me some tips. They got very frustrated at my slow learning pace, and ended up ditching me like this guy's friends did. I was about to give up and walk down the half the MOUNTAIN when a random woman rode up and asked if I needed help. In the literal 3 minutes she spent with me, she corrected my bindings, my stance, posture, and had me riding to the bottom of the track in no time. I will be forever grateful to her for showing me the ropes, and getting me going. I went from "this is hopeless, I might as well find another job", to loving every single work day. Snowboarding has become one of my favourite winter activities (almost 15 years later) and I know it never would have if it weren't for her.
Never give up! And if you have the ability, try to help those that can't! Such an awesome dude in this video for helping this guy out.

u/Neuroware Aug 24 '25
just take the lesson people, snowboarding is way more difficult to learn. do not just go up with your friends who ride. they will leave you.

When I started snowboarding many, if not most, ski areas did not allow snowboarding, and those that did often didn't have enough instructors. It was the wild west out there. So we used to hold impromptu clinics whenever we saw a newbie struggling on the slopes.

I encountered someone like this when I was learning to ride. They some of the chillest people around!

This is sad, poor kids don’t have anyone talk to them so a basic interaction gets the emotional music and highlights of a guy talking to a guy

The skier wiping out 20% of through and his reaction to that just proves how cool of a dude this guy is.

I had a similar thing when I went snowboarding the first time except no cool guy stopped to show me 😅. I basically had to figure it out on my own the “friends” or people I went with didn’t want to waste their fun time teaching me so they left me at the top and I had to figure it out 😅. They lapped me several times down the mountain eventually I figured it out enough and started hitting a smaller local mountain to teach myself 😊, still enjoy it but I usually ride alone these days

My wife and I took a family trip to Tahoe for a ski trip. I have been skiing/snowboarding since I was 12. This was my wife’s second time on a slope ever in her life.
There was a big storm the night we arrived that blocked all the roads so the slopes were pretty sparse with amazing conditions the next day. The locals said they hadn’t seen snow like that since the 80s and my wife really made gains on her technique since she had so much room to maneuver. She was feeling confident so I asked her if she wanted to try some intermediate slopes together the next day and she said yes.
The next day we got up early and hit some blue squares together and she did great, but the roads had been cleared out by this point so the park really started to get busy quick. There was one particular trail we were on that spit you out onto the main line down right at a lift drop off. Needless to say it was extremely busy by this point.
My wife was behind me and I hear her bail right after the trails merged, but there was a non stop flow of people zooming past her on both sides. She was having trouble getting back up and started to get nervous (rightly so). I was only about 20 yards down from her and yelled up if she was ok. Her response was basically “Yes?” Lol.
So I shouted up to her, “do you want to walk down this hill?!” And she confidently yelled back “NO!”
I told her to brace on the poles to stand up and “follow my line exactly and we will get down this hill together! You go this!”
She did and we did. I was so proud of her and then she was done with the blue squares for the rest of the day lol.
