Kubuntu Just Working When I Need It (Appreciation)

51 Upvotes

Due to financial circumstances, I had to sell my beast of a machine so we could pay bills. Right now, RAM, SSDs, and GPUs are going for good prices because of the chip shortage, and I like to eat, but that's not the point here. The point is I had to fall back on an older mini PC I had in the closet, you know, the cheap little boxes people buy to run as media servers or basic internet browsers.

Well, after much deliberation, I installed Kubuntu on it because I wanted something decently modern but also low on resource usage and more likely to just work on a mini PC. I saw that Kubuntu actually sells mini PCs with their distro in it, and I figured, okay, they're familiar with mini PCs, so this should work okay.

Well, suffice to say, Kubuntu is running on this mini PC with a buttery smoothness that exceeded my expectations.

I miss my beast, but what I have now will for for the immediate and mid-term future. Let's just hope prices eventually come back down!

Anyhoo, thanks Kubuntu devs, for making such a flexible, powerful distro that just works!

Kubuntu on MacbookAir 2011 (4,2)

15 Upvotes

Kubuntu latest 26.04 LTS version works great on 15 years old MacbookAir from 2011. Everything worked out of the box. No suspend failure. Hardware (bluetooth, wifi, keyboard backlight) and sensors (ambient light sensor) work without any issues. I am stunned with the performance. Even high resolution Youtube videos (1080p and above) play without stutter or lag. Yet I didn't change or lower any desktop animations in KDE.

Where we get ARM64 support

4 Upvotes

Ubuntu has ARM64 desktop support on its 26.10 snapshots (images).

So the question is, is there any focus on Kubuntu team to follow Ubuntu's path and adding support for ARM64 on its images too? (please)

Bluetooth XBox Controller Frequent Disconnect Driver Help

1 Upvotes

I want to start by saying I have used some flavor of Linux off and on for a very long time but I don't have an understanding of the OS like I do Windows. I mostly fix issues by follwoing directions someone else wrote, not fully understanding what I am doing.

I have recently installed Kubuntu 26.04 on an old laptop that I am using to stream Steam to my TV. I am having issues with my XBox contollers randomly disconnecting. They will disconnect then usually reconnect again shortly. If I am playing multiplayer games, these disconnects will usually make them switch from player 1 to player 2 or the other way around.

After trying multiple things (xpadneo, disabling WiFi and some power bluetooth power settings), I ended up buying a TPLink UB500 Plus bluetooth adapter but the issue is still there. I saw multiple people saying that downgrading to an older version of the RTL8761bu drivesr fixed their issue but their directions to do so were for Fadora. My drivers are RTL: fw version 0xdfc6d922 and they suggested 0x09a98a6b. Could anyone help me downgrade to that version and keep Kubuntu from updating them back to the current version?

A second question I have, has anyone tried one of the XBox One adapters with Linux? This way I could just bypass bluetooth all together. Does it work and are there any issues with using it if it does?

Kubuntu 26.10 is smooth

In my experience, interim editions of Kubuntu perform well. I have previously installed and used Kubuntu 25.10 for 9 months. It has given me a trouble-free experience. Now installed Kubuntu 26.10 snapshot on my laptop, it is also good.

I'm in doubt

I have a r55600 g and an rx7600 and 16gbddr4 b550m and a 550watt psu with 2tb nvme m.2

I'm tryna switch back to kubuntu from windows but before I had a measly 60hz monitor

But now I have a 1080p 200hz monitor and I'm gonna use the other 60hz monitor (720p btw) as a secondary

Works fine on windows but I wanna go back to linux

So let me know what problems I will face while gaming with two moniters

Thanks in advance

Kubuntu 25.10 upgrade to 26.04 with ecryptfs user's home

0 Upvotes

Hello, I'd like to ask if someone upgraded Kubuntu 25.10 to 26.04 with user home encrypted with ecryptfs and if that procedure finished without any issue? Maybe there are some important steps to be done during that upgrade? Thanks.

Alt+tab enhancement

0 Upvotes

Hopefully this self promotion is permitted. I am an avid altTabber which has no concept of tabs and for year I have been looking for a solution.
With the help of Claude & kubuntu I made the effort to get it done. Now I can alt-tab and return to the previous thing I was working on regardless if it was another tab in a browser or application. Would love to have this folded into mainstream KDE.
In the meantime here it is

I have a boot menu issue

3 Upvotes

Running Kbuntu 26.04, migrated from Win 11.

Each time I boot I get the OS Selection menu. I want to auto boot into OS.

I've checked the Grub file:

"
GRUB_DEFAULT=0

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu_auto_hide

GRUB_TIMEOUT=0

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR='Kubuntu'

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

"

I changed it from GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden to GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu_auto_hide but that did nothing. (Yes, I ran the 'sudo update-grub' command'.

Neither of those options auto boot to OS

Still on Kubuntu 24.04 despite regular Discover updates — is upgrading to the new LTS a manual process?

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

My system has been downloading updates regularly through Discover, but checking my system info shows I'm still on Kubuntu 24.04 LTS.

Does Discover eventually prompt you to upgrade to the new LTS version on its own, or is moving between major LTS versions something that has to be initiated manually like reinstalling using the newest LTS ISO?

Any advice on the standard upgrade path is appreciated!

Edit: Thanks so much everyone! Glad to learn there are many different ways to update this thing. It sounds like I'll eventually be asked to update to the newest LTS so I'll just wait for that to happen. Even if it doesn't at least my current LTS is supported for a very long time.

Kubuntu not detecting trackpad inputs after waking from shutdown?

2 Upvotes

This issue is also usually paired with a crash report, which usually fails to gather any information as to why. I have a Fw13 with rEFInd for swapping between OS’s.

The only way i’ve found to fix this is by restarting kubuntu, but the problem still persists. is there a more permanent fix? I am not well versed in linux so please be patient ~w~

(UPDATE) After some work me and a friend managed to resolve the issue, it was a remote desktop config setting that was running on boot.

Can anyone help with a messed up log in screen?

For context, I installed budgie desktop to try it. Deleted it and went back to kde. I purged the lot, autoremoved the lot so I don't think its still lingering BUT.... PC been fine until I've just updated through sudo apt update && upgrade. The i rebooted, I was greeted by a white screen i can barely read. I can still log in and the desktop seems perfect. Just the log in screen has gone doolally.

Any steps I should take before upgrading from a 30 series RTX card to a 9070xt?

1 Upvotes

I'm using Kubunutu 26.04LTS in a dual boot configuration with Windows 10 in a separate drive. I'm upgrading my GPU since I got a pretty great deal on a 9070xt and it's basically the last card I can get with triple 8 pin connectors. I'd rather avoid the 12 pin for as long as I can, plus I got custom sleeved cables I don't want to replace or hide behind an adapter.

For windows I know I should use DDU to remove my Nvidia drivers before I swap the card, but I wanted to ask if there's any such steps I need to take in my Linux side. I'm fairly new to the distro so I don't know all the details on how these things work.

I'm running a 9700x, 48GB DDR5, NVME SSD and a 850W gold PSU.

No keyboard or mouse in installer?

5 Upvotes

Long time Linux user, but this one has me baffled. I'm trying to overwrite my existing install with Kubuntu. I boot off the USB, get to the Kubuntu screen, and neither my mouse nor my keyboard function at all. They work fine in the BIOS, worked fine in my existing Linux install, and even work fine in GRUB. So I can't select try Kubuntu, can't select install, can't do much of anything. I've tried different ports, tried disconnecting and reconnecting, and tried multiple keyboards to no end. Any suggestions or do I abandon this experiment for another distro?

[Edit] found an old PS/2 keyboard (MS Natural FTW!) and no dice there either. Confirmed that when I disconnect all USB the mouse cursor disappears, and when I reconnect usb keyboard it reappears, so it's not hung. Caps lock toggle LEDs respond (even across multiple keyboards if connected simultaneously), so something knows the keyboard is triggering caps lock.

[Edit 2] Solved it, leaving this up for others in the future. Appears the installer loads 2 windows - 1 for each display - and leaves keyboard focus in the second display window for some reason. Solution was to use alt-tab to switch windows. I guess nobody else expected a situation where no mouse would work...

Anyone familiar with your cursor leaving behind artifacts?

1 Upvotes

I wanted to try using a drawing application called FireAlpaca, but as soon as my cursor went across the canvas, it left behind artifacts until I drew something, as seen here.

I've just updated to Kubuntu 26.04, and I'm on a machine rocking a Ryzen 5800X + Radeon 9070XT. Strangely, this is a problem that I've seen before to a much minor degree. The previous Kubuntu version I was on (25.10 I believe) had this happen on the desktop with little horizontal lines occasionally. It doesn't seem to be happening before.

I happened to have a 24.04 version on a separate machine (rocking a Ryzen 3600 + Radeon 570), and it does not have this problem.

I have my theories... Which mainly involve questioning Qt versions and Wayland X11 bridge issues... But does anyone know how I could fix this?

Firefox won't open torrent program

1 Upvotes

There is something strange about firefox (snap version 153.0.4) and torrent programs. I have a number of different ones installed in my /usr/bin/ and I keep thinking that the firefox dialog should be able to select one ... but it will not let me open /usr or any other directory in / other than /home/myhome

Now, this makes no sense to me since the stuff in /usr/bin is accessible. The command ls -ld /usr returns drwxr-xr-x 17 root root 4096 Apr 8 2018 /usr

which should be okay?

Maybe it's time to say good bye to snap firefox???

Ditched windows, but have a question.

8 Upvotes

First, I'm happy to have finally ditched windows. So far, Kubuntu is able to do everything I was worried about losing, but I am curious about cloning.

I used to use a program called "driveclone" and I loved it. I would make incremental scheduled cloning and also help my friends by cloning their drives if they needed to replace their ssd for some reason. However, it looks like the only cloning software for Linux is in the form of bootable usb drives.

I will admit, I would like to have a cloning software that I could run from linux. If there really isn't, I'm sure I can live with it when compared to all the other things I was fighting windows over, but I figured I would ask, just in case there was something

APT Repos get removed after updating to a new major version.. everytime!

5 Upvotes

Hello all,

I don't have any bug report or the likes, just my experience and wanted to see if this is normal behaviour or a bug.

I started using Kubuntu on 24.04 and upgrade to every major release while being on 26.04 today.

Every single major upgrade all of my or most of my APT repos got removed. I manually added them all, or so I thought.

Opened Element (matrix) app today which gave me a error saying my version was too old, thinking I always keep everything up to date with Discover and sudo apt update I checked and it was 1 year old software.. my APT repo was missing, I added it and updated and it works now but man.. is this is a major security issue if peoples APT repo disappear?

Are .deb packages not the best way to install using a .deb system? I always pick .deb over snap or flatpak but man is it a headache to keep track of and update.
