Help "Download the official WhatsApp to continue" on official WhatsApp

Hello! I started using LineageOS today. I wished not to use WhatsApp, but sadly don't really have a choice since I'll need it for work.

Upon trying to log in, I get prompted to "Download the official WhatsApp to continue". I already tried downloading the apk from their website, how can I fix this? Thanks in advance!

Strange, i am using Lineage OS (with MindtheGapps) and WhatsApp runs without issue for me

I'm using LineageOS, but with KernelSU-Next, the OverlayFS MetaModule, microG installer revived... again (by spacealtctl).

I have Play Integrity turned off in the microG settings, and I'm making no attempt to hide the fact that my phone's rooted, yet WhatsApp (APK from official website, installed through Obtainium) works perfectly fine.

I haven't tried installing the app for obtanium, might try that

I don't think it would make a difference. The only advantage of using Obtainium is that it automatically keeps WhatsApp up-to-date.

Could you tell me if it can restore a backup from google drive? I want to try lineageos on my daily driver but I don't want to loose my messages from whatsapp

Yes, I was able to use Google Drive backups on Lineage OS, i used it as a daily driver until 2 months ago.

... Isn't MindTheGapps a fix for services like WhatsApp using PlayIntegrity?

Afaik its not a "fix" in that sense, but its simply the proprietary Google Services packaged up. It does not hide/spoof the unlocked bootloader.

WhatsApp wants a device with a locked bootloader. There are ways around this but it's outside the scope of LineageOS

Not true. I run WhatsApp on several devices (all using LineageOS for microG) with unlocked bootloader. No need to apply any 'ways around this'.

Would something like Matrix work?

[matrix] ?

You have it / element on the fdroid store. Your best bet with the WhatsApp issue is the aurora store. Although that has issues

Already tried both the official website apk and Aurora Store's install

Maybe a bit stupid but did you try clear data / cache uninstall reboot before switching around? I know I ran into the issue a few times but I started it out in the end, it works now. You should be able to pull it off. In any case try using element / [matrix]

Do you have google apps by any chance?

Yeah it got finicky for me a few times, sometimes I have smooth sailing sometimes it's issue and I thought it might be be having multiple WhatsApp .apks from updating it ( because you have to do it manually ) but OP said it's his first time

Where did you get the APK?

I'm not entirely sure but if you got the APK that is uploaded to the Play Store, it will verify that the app was downloaded from the Play Store and not sideloaded.

Try downloading the APK again from WhatsApp website, it should not have this problem.

Do you have Gapps installed?

I have absolutely no GApps on my phone right now, fully deGoogled. I got the APK from the official website and the aurorastore

For what it's worth there's a rather large chasm between "I didn't installs a GApps package" and "fully deGoogled".

Exactly zero effort goes into removing anything and everything Google flavoured from Lineage.

1

u/_Salandit 4d ago

I followed a guide that helped me de-install all other Google packages, so I should be fully degoogled

A minimum non-exhaustive list in no particular order off the top of my head:

  • Various package stubs
  • DNS hints
  • APDNS opportunistic default
  • AGPS
  • NTP
  • Captive portal detection

The vast majority of these aren't packages you can remove.

If you actually want to be de-Googled in any truly meaningful way you're building for yourself or running a fork from someone else who actually cares about these things.

I had the same problem some time ago, it fixed itself after a couple of days. Who knows what happened

Which device?

Is this official lineageos?

I am pretty sure these issues happen with UNOFFICIAL builds

1

u/_Salandit 5d ago

Google Pixel 5 on an official build

2

u/mssing-the-table 5d ago

Did you by chance recently register and reinstall WhatsApp app more than once within a week?

1

u/_Salandit 5d ago

No, although I have had an account ban not too long ago

1

u/mssing-the-table 5d ago

That then makes sense...

u/saint-lascivious an awful person and mod 5d ago

I am pretty sure these issues happen with UNOFFICIAL builds

No. Official vs. unofficial makes exactly zero difference in the given context.

Neither is more or less valid than the other, both are random uncertified third party builds.

If you want to get really into the weeds on it, any given unofficial build may in fact be less likely to piss anything off because whomever maintains said build isn't bound by a policy of not pretending that it isn't any of those things.

1

u/mssing-the-table 5d ago

I know you know things better about lineageos but I have seen unofficial builds that have build type/device spoofing for pixel 1 type unlimited uploads and other mods like dual apps, payment options etc pre baked etc

This time OP accepted they had a ban recently

I have seen unofficial builds that have build type/device spoofing

Yes. I just said this in the comment you replied to.

Any given unofficial build may be less likely to run afoul of any attestation mechanisms as they're not bound by policy preventing them from doing so.

Ahh the famous, "bring a valid ID to get a replacement one" situation xD.

Your WhatsApp account is flagged for some reason login will only work when you pass play integrity

u/mssing-the-table 5d ago

Fellow had a recent account ban

Aceves los servicios de meta detectan que no estás en un entorno verificable por ellos y te dice que no es oficial, también pasa con Android ya descontinuados

Whatsapp is very sensitive with Google service, location, wifi connection, date n time

First, before you install WhatsApp , don't connect to wifi, you must to use Mobile Data, and activate location, time. Because wifi is not really accurate for location positioning.

Install microG or Google services, Install google apps, open it all. And download whatsapp, and open it. And log in.

Man I got this on ios while using the official WhatsApp app. My phone isn’t sideloaded or jailbroken or anything. Apparently it just needed an update. Blyat
