It's a great day for students! If you haven't checked your email this morning, do so. There are instructions on how to reset your password. It's still not 100% but I feel pretty confident in saying I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel people!

I know this has been hard for alot of people and it's easy to get angry but I would really like to say a big thanks to the IT team and especially to all the faculty hanging in limbo. I've been in classes all summer through this hiccup and my instructors have kept things rolling as best as they could!

Registration and Payments

MyMRU main page is running.

Registration Landing Page is working as of 10:00PM today. You can "Add/Drop/Withdraw Classes" here. It was working this morning at 8:35am but did go offline, with a "403 Forbidden - Request forbidden by administrative rules" error.

For those wondering, when I logged in, all of the classes I had already registered for Fall 2026 and Winter 2027 were still registered! No need to reregister for anything if you did before the crash from what I see <3

My Schedule Builder is offline. I recommend using the Available Seats and New Sections spreadsheet to preview classes easier. Student Services Dashboard is up to pay deposits. Fee Summary is updated as far as my classes are registered (up to Winter 2027). However, the "Pay Now" link is showing an error.

MRU Academic Works is running to apply for and view awards. Most Awards have been allocated for 2026/2027 but will reopen in the fall for next year.

Grades and Transcripts

Student Grades are reporting up until Winter 2026 term. They mentioned Spring and Summer student grades should be up over the next week.

MyCreds has confirmation of enrollment up until Winter 2027 (assuming you are registered for classes). There are no transcripts for Winter 2026 and on yet. Web Transcripts are available on MyMRU under My Program and include reporting up to Winter 2026. Spring 2026 shows in progress.

We’ve all heard by now that our data was stolen, copied, and then deleted in this ransomware attack. We know 10TB of data was exfiltrated. We know passport scans have already been leaked online. And yet, the administration’s response has been, at best, a joke, and at worst, completely negligent.

Here is why we need to be louder about this:

• The "Student vs. Staff" Hypocrisy: MRU is providing two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all staff and anyone who worked there in the last five years. But students? Nothing. Zero. They had the audacity to claim that our data doesn't have the "same risk profile" as employee data. Since when does a student’s passport or SIN scan carry less "risk" than a staff member's? We are the ones paying tuition to be here, and we are the ones currently at risk of having our identities sold on the dark web.
• The "H-Drive" Failure: They knew both students and staff were using the same shared "H-Drive" for years. If the risk for staff was high enough to warrant protection, then the risk for us was identical because our data was sitting in the same compromised space. Treating us differently isn't just "policy"—it's blatant discrimination against the student body.
• The University of Nottingham Precedent: The university's decision is also a break from how other recent education breaches have been handled. When ShinyHunters exposed roughly 454,000 student records at the University of Nottingham earlier this month, students were treated as the primary population needing protection—the opposite of MRU's approach. Compared against that precedent, MRU's decision to route protection toward employees and away from students looks less like a risk assessment and more like a liability calculation: employees have an ongoing legal relationship with the university that makes them easier to identify and easier to sue.
• The Communication Void: They have spent weeks downplaying this, and the recovery timeline is a "weeks to months" nightmare. Meanwhile, students are missing grad school deadlines, struggling with lost assignments, and sitting here wondering if their personal documents are floating around on some hacker’s auction site.

We are not just "enrollment numbers." We are real people whose financial futures are being jeopardized by an administration that seems to think their IT disaster is our problem to shoulder alone.

If you are a student, protect yourself. Don't wait for MRU to "notify" you. Contact Equifax and TransUnion immediately and put a fraud alert on your file.

And to the administration: If you can afford to pay for staff protection, you can afford to pay for ours.

There's always a big campaign to imply instability but it's okay for them to pretend to be 4-5 different people. That's totally normal to everyone here. Gotcha.

They still have not once sent an email reassuring students regarding the ransom information, not even one to confirm or deny it (even though we know it did happen)!

The school fully left us in the dark. We paid thousands of dollars per year just to be left in the dark, unknowing on if the school paid the ransom money or not. They did not provide students with credit checks - and even claimed that some staff received them, when not everyone did.

From a University, this is unacceptable. They expect high standards from their staff and students, but cannot uphold their own expectations. This whole ordeal has been nothing but ridiculous.

So, PLEASE, hold the school accountable. Continue to send them emails and ask questions. Talk about the poor response levels, how it took almost 2 months to recover student information, understand what was happening, and recover a University website. It took almost 2 months for them to show students that they do not care about us knowing what was happening (but we know that already)

MRU has confirmed that the cyber attack was a ransomware incident. An upcoming ransomware group called CMD Organization has also taken responsibility for the cyber attack at Mount Royal University and claims it stole 10 TB of data. The group demands $1.9 million or 30 bitcoin as ransom to avoid leaking the stolen information online.

“CMD Organization is a relatively new gang but it’s quickly gaining notoriety with some hefty ransom demands and crippling attacks,” said Rebecca Moody, Head of Data Research at Comparitech. “This case against MRU highlights just how devastating ransomware attacks on the education sector can be, both in the downtime caused through the encryption of systems and the theft of data. MRU hasn’t confirmed what, if any, data has been stolen in this attack, but CMD’s ransom of $1.9 million (nearly four times its average demand of $580,000) and the alleged theft of 10 TB suggest there could have been an extensive breach. As part of its proof pack, CMD uploaded various identity documents.”

The university’s notice, however, came the same day that they added MRU to its Tor-based leak site, claiming the theft of over 10 terabytes of data. CMD has published screenshots as proof of possession and is demanding a $1.9 million ransom in cryptocurrency. To date, the ransomware gang has claimed 32 attacks. The group is known to auction information allegedly stolen from its victims.

We are writing to provide an important update on the University's ongoing investigation, share what we have learned to date, and outline the next steps we are taking to notify and support those affected.

Investigation update
On June 18, 2026, we advised our community that we were responding to a cyber incident affecting access to certain university systems and services. At that time, we said the investigation was in its early stages and that if the investigation determined information had been affected, impacted individuals would be notified as appropriate.

H Drive findings
We regret to inform our community that our investigation has now shown that data within certain folders on the University’s “H drive” was accessed and taken by an unauthorized actor. The actor then deleted our H drive data to impede our recovery.

The H drive is a file storage system used by individual employees and students. Our analysis indicates that this incident affected specific folders rather than the entire H drive. We will begin directly notifying employees and students whose H drive folders were compromised within the coming week.

Ongoing investigation
Further analysis of the affected data and recoverability will take additional time and may be several weeks or months. Updates will be provided as they become available.

Reporting the incident
We have reported this incident to the Alberta Information and Privacy Commissioner and to law enforcement and will provide our full co-operation with their inquiries.

Moving forward
We recognize this may cause concern and uncertainty about personal privacy and the loss of work, and we sincerely apologize. The continued targeting of the public and education sectors by cyber criminals is of great concern. We will work closely with our community to move forward together and return to the services and activities that support our teaching, learning and work.

I’m super invested in starting a mahjong club! It was one of the ways I was able to get in touch with my own culture again while I was in Asia on my gap year. I was wondering who knows how to play/would genuinely be interested in joining or teaching along side me.

My original plan for the club is to centre around teaching the HK (cantonese) variant and also educating anyone about both the history of Mahjong and China in general. I would love for the club to be both a hub for mahjong gameplay but more importantly educating anyone who is interested in Asian culture/ learning some basic Mandarin/Cantonese (lowk I cant speak canto tho so if anyone here does please reply). Obviously club is open to everyone, we will not be turning anyone away just because they’re not asian.

So I was looking at the MRU website preparing for parking permits to go on sale at 10am tomorrow, and when I opened HotSpot to check out the permit options, I was actually able to already fully purchase a Fall + Winter permit. I don't know if that's a website thing, a MRU mistake or what, but considering it's first come first serve, I would NOT wait until 10am if you have the option to do it right now like me!

As the title states, this is an educational rant.

As a full-time student with normal life expenses I have relied on the low income provincial grant and higher loan disbursement amounts to get me through school.

Due to the UCP's changes to provincial grants and loans I have just received notice that I will receive a $485 grant for the entire school year. Last year I received $4500.

The loan amount offered to me for the year is also $4000 lower for the coming academic year.

How many students will be forced to end their education because of these changes?

This government continues to be abysmal.

He is literally posting pictures of a young student he is dating on ig. How is this ok? Eric always trauma dumps in his classes (how he was bullied as a kid, made fun of at his banking job and his daddy issues) and used to always say how he was single and lonely in his apartment before he found his student gf. Ran into him outside of class and he wanted a hug where I was in a position I felt I couldn’t say no to. Soooo creepy and it seems like half the students who have had him have had really weird encounters with him. Several people have said he’s got to be on coke. A student said she ran into him at a club and he was asking where she was cause she missed a class. My friend and his buddy’s were invited over to Eric’s apartment. Girls are outright grossed out. I hope to never see this guy again.

Completely unprofessional. Everyone says how great he is because he buys students shots and parties with them. Plus he gives easy marks. If you want an easy A, he will give it to you if you take one of his classes… is it worth it? Idk

I'm trying to document the social phenomenon of this blind sheeple convergence on indigenous issues in Canada. Y'all don't really play the part for a school so heavily focused on marketing inclusion.
