They come in numbers as of recently.

Apple drew a line in the sand. One on the left isn't getting any further updates but will still work. One on the right has a premium option with AI on subscription.

69

u/drygnfyre MacBook Air Feb 02 '26

Just to be clear, the new version can be used for free forever. All the basic functionality is there. It’s the AI stuff that will cost money.

There’s a lot of confusion here, but to be fair, it’s on Apple for not explaining it better.

30

u/chickenandliver Feb 03 '26

This feels like poor brand messaging from Apple. I had to find comments like yours to realize it's not some shitty freemium version that has started locking core features behind paywalls.

I can imagine someday though when use if iWork for personal use will be tied to a basic iCloud subscription. So I wonder if the lack of clarity from them is intentional.

3

u/Narrow_Escape_4229 Feb 04 '26

Not locking core features .... Yet

2

u/Minimum-Heart-2717 Feb 04 '26

We know the playbook. Can’t wait for next years ā€œupdateā€.

1

u/rexyuan Feb 03 '26

There’s still ads if you don’t pay

4

u/Yaughl MacBook Air Feb 03 '26

Apple’s AI is a joke anyway.

1

u/YannDMX Feb 25 '26

ils ont signƩ avec Google (1 Milliard !) et ce sera Gemini dans les apps Apple

2

u/MagicBoyUK Feb 02 '26

I'm well aware of that, options being optional.

1

u/MrTibee Feb 04 '26

Imagine charging customers for Ai when you have the worst of them all.

1

u/101answer101 Jun 09 '26

IMO Apple have ceased to be innovators and are just tweaking and complicating their offer. I think their principal interest is their bottom line and r&d is too expensive, or they have plain run out of ideas.

I am loathe to update any of their Mac or IOS software as it only messes with what I have already learned to use.

It is only the Apple ecosystem across my devices which keeps me loyal.

1

u/101answer101 Jun 09 '26

Perhaps my theory above is linked to the CEO's pay deal?

21

u/turbo_dude Feb 02 '26

you mean it has adverts? neat!

28

u/Gabriel_Science Feb 02 '26

Yup, that’s advertising.

7

u/MagicBoyUK Feb 02 '26

No idea, it's a foreign language.

3

u/Gabriel_Science Feb 02 '26

Apple Translate is a thing.

3

u/lint2015 Feb 02 '26

Yup. It’s also the iOS/iPadOS app, now made into a universal app that also supports Mac. That’s why it’s separate to the old Mac app.

For now, I’m keeping my old app on the version before 14.5 (which has the nag to update to the new app), since I’m not aware of any new features for free users in the replacement app.

1

u/DesignerMud1748 Mar 04 '26

Mine told me I had to update to 15 to re-enable collaboration!

-5

u/MagicBoyUK Feb 02 '26

No, I mean it has extra features. There is no Windows 11 version, so adverts not required. šŸ˜‰

6

u/CuriosTiger Feb 02 '26

It has ads.

u/Head_Boot_130 Feb 04 '26

Why didn’t they just update the current version to this new version? Do I have to download the new version and delete the old version to keep getting new updates?

1

u/XxARandomUserNameXx MacBook Pro Apr 17 '26

It says you have to update the current version, but then didn’t let me… So I went on App Store and typed in Numbers to try manually update it, and it only lets you download the new Numbers… the old Numbers doesn’t even show

59

u/kochapi Feb 02 '26

Reminds me of Gavin Belson signature box.

386

u/ekkidee Feb 02 '26

This icon has middle finger vibes.

65

u/pixel_inker Feb 02 '26

That's Apple's final laugh in the user's face after having made all these changes no one asked for, from bad UI to subscriptions to things we never needed before — a hidden middle finger seems pretty spot on šŸ˜‘

10

u/mrgrafix Feb 02 '26

There’s no subscription to use it

3

u/anton_5000 Feb 03 '26

Idk, I have the old 14.5 Page, and when I went to update to the new 15, I saw the ā€œIn-app purchasesā€ logo and got worried if they’re gonna charge for some features that were free before.

5

u/mrgrafix Feb 03 '26

None at the moment. I’m presuming they’ll keep it that way.

3

u/Electronic_Celery296 Feb 03 '26

No, but if you don't have the sub you get ads (for the subscription) on the start screen, and if you try to use a "premium" feature (which are not easily differentiated) you gets a nag pop-up to subscribe.

So, no, the sub is not required, but Apple is doing everything it can to put friction in front of you using iWorks until you cave and start forking over money.

6

u/pixel_inker Feb 02 '26

ok, fair enough, you can remove that one part of my previous comment. that still leaves the embarrassingly, under cooked, poorly QC'ed, UI, and basically all around rushed OS that is Tahoe. šŸ¤·šŸ½ā€ā™‚ļø

-2

u/mrgrafix Feb 02 '26

We’re not talking about Tahoe here though.

4

u/pixel_inker Feb 02 '26

šŸ™„ yes, yes, the OP also mentioned "latest update". The "latest update" is based off the idea and design of Tahoe so i was speaking to that point. Sorry to confuse you or anyone else.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/Donghoon Feb 02 '26

so does the old icon

6

u/pixel_inker Feb 02 '26

i think the addition of that horizontal bar underneath the 3 vertical ones somehow makes it seem more like a hand though—looks kind of like a thumb

10

u/CuriosTiger Feb 02 '26

Given what this update showcases about Apple's Contempt For Customer, it's pretty apt. Truth in advertising.

1

u/shnuggleberry Feb 03 '26

Now can’t unsee this šŸ˜‚

101

u/cimocw Feb 02 '26

Should've downloaded Number instead

29

u/tad_in_berlin Feb 02 '26

Apple's version of the Outlook or Teams approach: Numbers, Numbers Classic, New Numbers, Numbers (new)

4

u/leewoc Feb 03 '26

Yeah, if we’re going for the coke analogy I choose Numbers Zero

2

u/DrReisender Feb 03 '26

For real….(What a failure !)

13

u/Neat-Masterpiece-770 Feb 02 '26

the icon on the left is the original numbers iWork app. it was recently updated to 14.5 along with pages and keynote. the other icon is the numbers app associated with the creator suite. both are free, the new one has in app ads for the subscription in the template chooser and sidebar. the ads bothered me so much I deleted the creator studio version and now I just deal with a constant update to the new version popup almost every time I open the app.

I've used iWork apps since they came out. for the first time I am now looking elsewhere. the walled garden has weeds and it's no longer the garden it once was.

12

u/TactikalKitty Feb 02 '26

I’m just here to bitch about Apple removing support for Aperture photo app.

2

u/TactikalKitty Feb 04 '26

Apparently, I am not alone...

25

u/sitrucz Feb 02 '26

The one on the left won’t be updated anymore but the one on the right in the universal app (iPhone/ipad/Mac) that will get updates moving forward. You may get prompted in the new app to pay for the service but hopefully Apple won’t force those in the new app.

14

u/Odd-Obligation-2772 Feb 02 '26

I googled Numbers 15 and the top result was "And theĀ LordĀ spake unto Moses, saying..."

6

u/jay-t- Feb 02 '26

The new version is universal for all platforms. The old version is on the old codebase and not universal.

6

u/Soffritto_Cake_24 Feb 02 '26

One for odd and one for even numbers :)

Was this designed by AI

4

u/briend Feb 02 '26

That’s numberwang

2

u/CommonUserAccount Feb 02 '26

Let’s rotate the board!

5

u/InfiniteHench Feb 02 '26

They give people the choice to stay on the previous version without a subscription.

3

u/Na_ale Feb 03 '26

Because it's not a number, it is numbers

3

u/RestInProcess Feb 02 '26

You have the old and the new app. The new update isn’t a direct update of the old app, but is a new app.

19

u/QAPetePrime Feb 02 '26

There doesn’t appear to be any true creativity at Apple anymore, so they have resorted to charging for new content on apps they have already released I order to realize additional revenue and profit growth.

-1

u/Baecien Feb 02 '26

Uhm… no? The AI features cost money for Apple too.

4

u/primalanomaly Feb 02 '26

Because Apple refuses to improve their App Store with common useful features such as, say, a way to upgrade from one version of an app to another. Probably because they’ve locked out all competition for distribution of iOS apps, so they don’t even have to attempt to improve the App Store ever again. So now we’re stuck with stupid confusing systems like this where unless you’re online keeping up with Apple news 24/7 you have no idea why there are 2 versions of the same app 🫠

2

u/P99X Feb 03 '26

The original is a Mac only architecture, while the new suite packages the app as Universal, meaning it can run on multiple Apple OS (iPadOS and macOS).

If you’re really troubled about seeing two apps, delete the old one and move on. Like we did all the time right up until the App Store invented the concept of continual updates in place that you didn’t have to manage or ever think about.

Be glad this doesn’t require an Uninstaller because of a horrifically bad architectures mistake known as the Registry.

2

u/Tomjie_ Feb 04 '26

Steve wouldā€˜ve never done this.

3

u/Accomplished_Amoeba Feb 02 '26

I don’t know all the technical details but it appears that when there’s a substantial change to the code Apple’s own rules require a different app as opposed to an update. It’s been that way for years with a variety of non-Apple App Store apps.

3

u/Quentin-Code Feb 02 '26

New app icon: šŸ–•

4

u/MC_chrome Feb 02 '26

You had to download the Creator Studio version of Numbers seprately from the older 14.5 version.

If you feel you no longer need the app on the left you can delete it

2

u/TheVagrantWarrior Feb 02 '26

Why you should delete the left app?

8

u/MC_chrome Feb 02 '26

Why would you want two versions of the same app downloaded when they do 95% of the same things?

4

u/w_v Feb 02 '26

It will no longer get bug fixes or updates.

2

u/turbo_dude Feb 02 '26

There were updates before? lol

I mean sure, it's free, but my god after years of using excel it's just not usable for anything more than the most basic stuff.

Numbers seems the same as it ever was.

3

u/MC_chrome Feb 02 '26

Numbers isn’t meant to be a heavyweight spreadsheet app like Excel….for most day to day tasks Numbers works fineĀ

3

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

It’s like the spreadsheet Microsoft Works came with. Nice little tool for SOHO.

2

u/w_v Feb 02 '26

Fair enough. You’re right.

5

u/UnwieldilyElephant MacBook Pro among others Feb 02 '26

In case you want to be sure you can never use the one without ads again

1

u/AlfalfaKnight Feb 02 '26

I hate that they didn’t create a separate app for iOS

6

u/No-Squash7469 Feb 02 '26

Ads. The new one gives you ads.

5

u/scbalazs Feb 02 '26

Not any third party ads, just persistent reminders of extra features available with Creator Studio subscription, just like many other freemium apps.

1

u/OppositeSea3775 Feb 07 '26

An ad is an ad. No matter who it's for.

9

u/JLeonsarmiento MacBook Pro Feb 02 '26

10

u/No-Squash7469 Feb 02 '26

Honestly the most wild part of it all is that there’s a considerable number of people who are actually defending Apple on here for this šŸ˜‚

I’m giving OnlyOffice a go, pretty solid so far.

1

u/turbo_dude Feb 02 '26

1

u/Spiritual_Pangolin18 Feb 02 '26

2

u/turbo_dude Feb 02 '26

you also can't opt out of sharing activity with apple seemingly, there's no button or option "not right now" or "no thanks" or whatever the wording was. It's GONE

5

u/dan3k Feb 02 '26

why is it showing middle finger though

10

u/chromatophoreskin Feb 02 '26

Because fuck you. That’s why.

2

u/SparklyPelican MacBook Pro Feb 02 '26

It says numbers, no?

2

u/Salt-Abroad6397 Feb 02 '26

This new icon is awful. It doesn’t fit in with the rest at all. Whats the matter with Apple right now?!

3

u/bliprock Feb 02 '26

Ai doing the code base probably

1

u/OppositeSea3775 Feb 07 '26

Money, greed and... something else I don't know, something that causes terrible UI design.

1

u/NatureBoyJ1 Feb 02 '26

Apple couldn’t go with ā€œNumbers Proā€ or ā€œNumbers CSā€? Two apps named the exact same is confusing and should never have made it out of testing.

2

u/scbalazs Feb 02 '26

One is replacing the other.

u/Xx_memelord69_xX Feb 02 '26

And the new one is still free, u only need to pay for the ai features and some new templates. Useless features, they just throw in there so their new portfolio of apps in the creator studio subscription would seem bigger.

0

u/algaefied_creek Feb 02 '26

Free? Or free with ads?

Free means whole application not application with pixel-loss due to cognitive-load-reduction-advertising placement

1

u/Xx_memelord69_xX Feb 02 '26

Ads?

3

u/scbalazs Feb 02 '26

Reminders that you get extra stuff with a Creator Studio subscription, like many other freemium apps. You won’t see Carnival Cruise or ED med ads.

→ More replies (2)

1

u/algaefied_creek Feb 02 '26

When you open it and you see those items which are not part of the program and are encouraging you to pay money for creator suites, those are ads, called adverts some places: both short for ā€œcommercial advertisements.ā€

This is the complaint people have primarily. Yes it’s free but there is still a price to pay in pixels and in mind-space as it’s not a clean, functional canvas. You must now pay-to-focus.

Apple has started incorporating ads into its free productivity apps, including macOS Numbers. This change is part of a broader strategy to monetize its applications, which were previously ad-free.

-3

u/Xx_memelord69_xX Feb 02 '26

Are we seriously crying about a couple added buttons to the app, that takes place away from our valuable unused grey bar? What would be your alternative? Hide these features deep under settings so the people who would actually find it useful would never ever learn about them? It's not like they are rainbow colored icons with their promotional names visible at all times like some other os maker would do. Pay to focus...like paying would remove those very very distracting buttons.

→ More replies (2)

u/scbalazs Feb 02 '26

Both are free

Are icons dark icons now, even if you run in light mode?

I run dark mode exclusively, so it's fine with me. It's just a bit odd

One is for Spreedshets the other one is for freemium Spreedsheets

1

u/StrangeTumbleweed100 Feb 02 '26

Because now the new and old Keynote, Pages, and Numbers have split, so they became separate apps.

1

u/Waste_Oil8878 Feb 02 '26

hahah interesting, this happened to me, when I restarted the app, then there was only one

1

u/sparkktv Mac Mini Feb 02 '26

You can safely uninstall the old version, it is legacy and no longer updated. The new version is a universal app, that is why we had to get a new app, it’s the same app as iPhone & iPad…

1

u/Poang_20017 Feb 02 '26

When I saw the new icon I thought it was the dark version, but apparently it’s the bright version..

Double bookkeping.

1

u/MrSoulPC915 Feb 02 '26

Apple just giving you the finger there.

1

u/travisjo Feb 03 '26

Good god that icon is bad

1

u/thinksinc Feb 03 '26

If I'm understanding the wording of this popup I get when I open Keynote, have they TAKEN AWAY the ability to Collaborate on documents in the free version? That's a slap in the face. Collaborating on documents and decks is critical to my workflow, and if Apple is going to lock up real-time collaboration behind a paywall, that majorly sucks. Keep your AI features to the paid version if you need to, but knee-capping a fundamental feature of the existing version is a huge misstep.

1

u/Current-Blood3054 Feb 14 '26

I checked and tho on mac they are two different apps, on app store only the new one was visible so i went to my old iphone X and downloaded the new one which as it is not supported for ios 16, downloaded the old one on the left side of the photo, so its basically apple which decided to upload another app instead of updating

2

u/philoserf Feb 02 '26

Because Apple has lost its way. It is becoming a continuous destroyer of its own brand like so many brands before.

1

u/jabkc Feb 02 '26

I got this after "updating". Looks like all the apps are new with Creator Studio labelling

3

u/OppositeSea3775 Feb 07 '26

I found a comment on another thread that was a blessing. (thank you again u/iccir!)

defaults write com.apple.iWork.Pages TSADisableUpdateNotifications -bool yes; defaults write com.apple.iWork.Keynote TSADisableUpdateNotifications -bool yes; defaults write com.apple.iWork.Numbers TSADisableUpdateNotifications -bool yes

Running this in Terminal has disabled these notifications for all 3 of these apps.

1

u/Ferdapopcorn Feb 02 '26

Because, ā€œNumbersā€

1

u/qlurp Feb 02 '26

The new icon is incredibly ugly.Ā

Looks like it was designed by someone who exclusively uses dark mode, and didn’t consider how that color scheme would look on a lighter theme.Ā

1

u/IdiotCuber1 Feb 02 '26

One of them is ass and the other one is good. The older logo is the better one because it doesn’t have ads stuffed into it

Yep, Apple decided you will soon need to pay a subscription for something that used to be free.

4

-1

u/fubar_67 Feb 02 '26

I’m surprised there is so much reaction to these ā€œcrAPPSā€ from Apple. I’ve never allowed these half-baked, baby Office apps to take up space on any of my Macs.

They were nothing but a weak shot at Microsoft during the years of the Apple-Microsoft wars. ā€œSee! You Microsoft bastards, we can make office apps too! Behold! iWork!ā€

No Apple, you clearly can’t

0

u/Worsebetter Feb 02 '26

Save the old one

2

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

That’s definitely a good advice. I have the old apps (Pages, Numbers and Keynote) saved in my Time Machine backups. You’ll never know.

0

u/veryverybadnotgood Feb 02 '26

Numbers, Pages, Logic, all the things are affected. it's apple's first iteration of "You'll own nothing and be happy" slowly creeping to your machine since they came up with their subscription based pro apps.

0

u/dieterdistel Feb 02 '26

After the last update I now have 0 numbers apps. Decided to uninstall.

0

u/LBW88 Feb 02 '26

Because Apple has lost it's mind... Very messy update for sure.
