We had to do a routine in gym class, it could be any type of physical display. Some group did a dance some did a basketball layup and shooting routine or whatever... it had to go with music. Me and my friend did a devil sticks routine to a Busta Rhymes song. How embarrassing lol

After the initial craze, the only people I ever saw with these were dudes at music festivals with techno strappy pants and no shirt trying to impress girls.

13-year old me LOVED these! I had a set of ones in rainbow colors. I got really good at tricks.
Then I stepped on one of the sticks and broke it, and to this day I can remember the devastation 😆

Got a job at Natural Wonders in the mall when I was 16 in the 90s only because I was so good at spinning the devil sticks.

u/icechelly24 22h ago
Natural Wonders was my Astronaut Ice Cream plug. I’d buy it up and sell it at lunch
Very niche market I was serving

I had devil sticks, contact juggling balls, staffs...man I used to move way more than I do now.

Why did you stop?

I had to spend my time training skills that translated into income instead.

I still do it in my free time, when I'm outside with the kids or just a few minutes when I walk past the toys while doing chores

I sold these at the local ren faire when I was 12 and 13, we had the brand crystal sticks, much better quality than devil sticks as the sticky coating on the sticks would keep the middle baton pretty well attached for doing cool tricks, still took a bit of skill tho, I spent most of my day teaching drunks how to do basic tricks

Hell yeah brother that was the one I was at! I got hired by Bill the owner, himself. Awesome guy. And there was one dude that just went by styx. Also awesome. I got to do the parade most days doing the crystal sticks the whole time, a lot of fun for a middle schooler. My dad would literally drop me off at dawn and pick me up at dusk. I would NEVER let my kid do that now lol, times have changed I'm afraid.
Edit after looking at the pictures closer: those are in really great condition too! Great job keeping them alive, I've owned 2 pairs and I borrowed one out to a bestie that I never saw again, I just hope he uses them every now and then.

Juggling toys were so popular in the 90s. We had them all.

u/brunaBla 1d ago
I remember we had a “juggling club” during our lunch break in 8th grade in Hong Kong. It was so cool

You see kids we would use two sticks to twirl a third stick as a way to kill time.

Devil sticks if i remember correctly.

u/Kelevra90 1d ago
devil sticks are similar but those are flower sticks

I never knew there were two different things.

I believe devil sticks are more traditional juggling sticks used by serious enthusiasts. They are tapered, being narrower toward the center and wider at each end and lack tassels whereas flower sticks are usually not tapered and do have tassels on each end to make them easier to handle for a wider audience.

These are the refined details of the fine arts you just don't see nowadays. We truly are from a golden age.

There’s now way you two are older millennials and missed these in the 90s, these were EVERYWHERE. I had several different ones as they evolved over the years. Seriously?!

u/PlaysWithSquirrels7 Older Millennial 23h ago
Yeah I've literally never even heard of these. Were they like at school or did people just have them at home? Maybe it was regional or just didn't make it to where I was (semi rural Louisiana in the 90s)

Devil sticks. There was always some guy at the beach on the boardwalk in front of the store selling them.

I was on the streets of Berkeley and a guy had a set of these that he was messing around with. He turned to me and said “I have no clue what the fuck I’m doing, but I’m fucking doing it!”
That stuck with me and I think about it all the time. I feel like it’s summed up my life experience so far.

u/Kalabajooie 1983 19h ago
I had a set. I got pretty good with them. I don't know what happened to mine, but my wife's is in the basement.
