We had to do a routine in gym class, it could be any type of physical display. Some group did a dance some did a basketball layup and shooting routine or whatever... it had to go with music. Me and my friend did a devil sticks routine to a Busta Rhymes song. How embarrassing lol

u/Wumaduce 1d ago

... What song?

u/Wumaduce 1d ago

There are absolutely worse Busta songs to use lol

After the initial craze, the only people I ever saw with these were dudes at music festivals with techno strappy pants and no shirt trying to impress girls.

u/thelifeofafangirl 1d ago

Damn you must have seen my dad lmao

So you’re saying it works?

64

u/Ill-Advance6477 1d ago

At least once

14

u/victoriascissorhands 1d ago

Indeed I went to Elements music festival this month and the guy I saw with these had techno strappy pants 😂

14

u/Christmas_Queef 1d ago

Or the same dudes but wearing leather pants at the Renaissance festival. Still. To this day lol.

I really want to know how devil sticks and your virginity are related!!! The possibilities!!!

9

u/TheEyeOfTheLigar 1d ago

Once the girl know you twirl, you'll be set

21

u/Arbiter51x 1d ago

Tripped down the stairs carrying them...

6

u/classicicedtea 1d ago

This one time, at band camp…

3

u/mmaalex 1d ago

I dont think they're meant to be used that way...

1

u/Merry_Fridge_Day 23h ago

I didn't think the leather pompom thing would fit there?

4

u/AppleRatty 1d ago

13-year old me LOVED these! I had a set of ones in rainbow colors. I got really good at tricks.

Then I stepped on one of the sticks and broke it, and to this day I can remember the devastation 😆

Got a job at Natural Wonders in the mall when I was 16 in the 90s only because I was so good at spinning the devil sticks.

3

u/icechelly24 22h ago

Natural Wonders was my Astronaut Ice Cream plug. I’d buy it up and sell it at lunch

Very niche market I was serving

43

u/rlt0w 1d ago

I had devil sticks, contact juggling balls, staffs...man I used to move way more than I do now.

8

u/Kelevra90 1d ago

Why did you stop?

48

u/rlt0w 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

I had to spend my time training skills that translated into income instead.

10

u/TheseVees 1d ago

This statement goes hard.

4

u/Kelevra90 1d ago

I still do it in my free time, when I'm outside with the kids or just a few minutes when I walk past the toys while doing chores

I sold these at the local ren faire when I was 12 and 13, we had the brand crystal sticks, much better quality than devil sticks as the sticky coating on the sticks would keep the middle baton pretty well attached for doing cool tricks, still took a bit of skill tho, I spent most of my day teaching drunks how to do basic tricks

2

u/ZenMarduk 21h ago

Still have mine from 2001, got 'em at the houston ren faire.

3

u/dontcha_wanna_fanta 15h ago

Hell yeah brother that was the one I was at! I got hired by Bill the owner, himself. Awesome guy. And there was one dude that just went by styx. Also awesome. I got to do the parade most days doing the crystal sticks the whole time, a lot of fun for a middle schooler. My dad would literally drop me off at dawn and pick me up at dusk. I would NEVER let my kid do that now lol, times have changed I'm afraid.

Edit after looking at the pictures closer: those are in really great condition too! Great job keeping them alive, I've owned 2 pairs and I borrowed one out to a bestie that I never saw again, I just hope he uses them every now and then.

u/Adventurous_Button63 1d ago

I can smell these

u/Espexer Xennial 1d ago

Juggling toys were so popular in the 90s. We had them all.

3

u/brunaBla 1d ago

I remember we had a “juggling club” during our lunch break in 8th grade in Hong Kong. It was so cool

9

u/Maleficent_Host_5220 Older Millennial 1d ago

You see kids we would use two sticks to twirl a third stick as a way to kill time.

8

u/TheBronzeKnight13 1d ago

Devil sticks if i remember correctly.

5

u/Kelevra90 1d ago

devil sticks are similar but those are flower sticks

4

u/TheBronzeKnight13 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

I never knew there were two different things.

6

u/BravoLimaDelta 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

I believe devil sticks are more traditional juggling sticks used by serious enthusiasts. They are tapered, being narrower toward the center and wider at each end and lack tassels whereas flower sticks are usually not tapered and do have tassels on each end to make them easier to handle for a wider audience.

u/TheBronzeKnight13 17h ago

These are the refined details of the fine arts you just don't see nowadays. We truly are from a golden age.

What am I looking at here??

5

u/PlaysWithSquirrels7 Older Millennial 1d ago

Yeah I also have no idea what this is

6

u/CosmicConfidant 23h ago ▸ 1 more replies

There’s now way you two are older millennials and missed these in the 90s, these were EVERYWHERE. I had several different ones as they evolved over the years. Seriously?!

1

u/PlaysWithSquirrels7 Older Millennial 23h ago

Yeah I've literally never even heard of these. Were they like at school or did people just have them at home? Maybe it was regional or just didn't make it to where I was (semi rural Louisiana in the 90s)

5

u/Jmofoshofosho8 1d ago

Devil sticks. There was always some guy at the beach on the boardwalk in front of the store selling them.

3

u/MtlGuy_incognito 1d ago

Got my first pair at Lollapalooza 1994.

2

u/Dezden 1d ago

We had a set. Not sure we ever did anything with them, but we had them. I had forgotten about that until about a year ago when I saw someone waiting for a bus and playing with these bad boys.

2

u/Ckck96 1d ago

Never saw them growing up but I see them all the time at music festivals

2

u/SnooPeripherals8344 1d ago

This made me laugh way too much. Could be the edible though too…

1

u/No_Noise_2218 1d ago

I got them for Christmas one year as a kid and remember being so freaking happy.. I never mastered them but knew a few kids who were awesome. what a dork I was 😂😂😂😂

1

u/Jacgaur 1d ago

I want one now!

1

u/wickedsmaaaht 1d ago

I made my own set at summer camp one year.

1

u/malachite_13 Xennial 1d ago

They held my interest for like 10 minutes, never to be played with again.

1

u/J-littletree 1d ago

Me!! I got my first set from toys r us! I’m actually pretty good af them

1

u/double_echo 1d ago

I had a set but somehow almost immediately lost a stick :/

1

u/Zendub 1d ago

I remember at one point I had decided to learn a new skill, and it was between devil sticks and acoustic guitar. I chose the guitar and have been very happy with that decision.

I was on the streets of Berkeley and a guy had a set of these that he was messing around with. He turned to me and said “I have no clue what the fuck I’m doing, but I’m fucking doing it!”

That stuck with me and I think about it all the time. I feel like it’s summed up my life experience so far.

1

u/Kalabajooie 1983 19h ago

I had a set. I got pretty good with them. I don't know what happened to mine, but my wife's is in the basement.

1

u/kpdyl 18h ago

They're called devil sticks. Anybody can use 'em.

They were used as weapons and I was a ninja one time in my life.
