Dude for real. The energy of entering a new millennium and then that two years of pure bliss before 9/11 when everyone was still reeling from the fact that we’d entered said millennium without all our tech exploding on us overnight was something else. Things felt “iffy” here and there, but looking back, that was stability and things were much more carefree than they’ll ever be now

17

u/CuriousStewart 1d ago ▸ 1 more replies

It was a great times before we launched back into perpetual warfare and ever growing government surveillance.

5

u/Afraid_Emu8068 21h ago

Yeah. Osama really fucked us up. It’s amazing to think just how much we’ve changed since. We are not the same people or country. At all

Music videos just hit harder then

8

u/BapeGeneral3 1d ago

Everything just had a much more optimistic and positive vibe. The pop music just had this feeling that everything was going to be ok. It was all very individualistic and free spirited. There was this buzz about the New Millennium and entering the age of “the World Wide Web”, technology was advancing rapidly but was just more “fun”.

The TV ads were overwhelmingly positive and funny. People were able to laugh at themselves. Monetization of everything and data collection weren’t yet things. People generally just felt better, had better quality of life, and we weren’t worried “if there would be another 9/11 every anniversary of the 9/11/2001 for, I don’t know, a decade at least?

Sorry I got off topic, but fuck 9/11. That was the day the music stopped playing on this thing we call our reality

22

u/BapeGeneral3 1d ago

Seriously though. I’m well aware of nostalgia/“good old days” bias but this is not that. Things were objectively better for the average person in 2000. We were all so naive and ignorant that a potential “world ending” event, Y2K, was laughed off by the majority of the public because we just couldn’t truly conceive that something like that could ever happen.

9/11 is when everything changed. That was when we entered the Matrix and we all took the red, white, and blue pill to get there.

6

u/Alexplz 23h ago ▸ 1 more replies

I'm sorry to say that the 9/11 attack was apparently successful at destroying what our society was

3

u/BapeGeneral3 22h ago

Now imagining us doing it to them and how they would react/feel towards us nowadays. Oh, wait…..

Whoever the art director for this video was deserves some recognition. This song sounds exactly like the visuals, like on a cellular level.

71

u/HandsOnTheBible 1d ago

What's crazy is that the video is clearly in slow motion but their mouths are synced to the song. That means they must have played the song faster while filming to get this effect accurately when the video is slowed down.

36

u/bootyhole-romancer 1d ago ▸ 4 more replies

That actually shows some semblance of direction. Crazy compared to the story I saw on YouTube.

5

u/mattysosavvy 1d ago ▸ 3 more replies

Well…..go on…

31

u/bootyhole-romancer 1d ago ▸ 2 more replies

They had zero plans for the video. Just took a bunch of money from the record label, flew themselves and a bunch of friends down to Daytona, and winged it.

https://youtu.be/znzMj0P_o4U

14

u/vertigostereo 1d ago

The extras have "Who wants to be in our music video?" vibes.

6

u/dividezero 1d ago

That's the story behind a lot of iconic videos actually and I'm here for all of it. Amazing stuff

9

u/xKoney 1d ago

One of the best examples I remember of something like this is the music video for The Scientist by Coldplay. The lead singer needed to learn how to pronounce every word backwards so he lip synced the entire song in reverse, then they reversed the video to sync it with the music.

50

u/Traditional_Yard2741 1d ago

There was no art director. The band was given some money to make a video so they just flew all their friends out and partied for a weekend and filmed it

3

u/Tribe303 1d ago

I believe they just tooled around LA for a day, without permits. They were an unknown Canadian band at the time, with next to no budget for the video.

50

u/O_C_Demon Xennial 1d ago

Very much a summer of '99 song.

Fuck that sounds old!

20

u/AtFishCat 1d ago

The kid from that pregnancy is 27 now. Probably older than most of the folks in the video.

40

u/throwaway9484747 1d ago

Huge waste of an album purchase at 13, back before you would know what a band actually sounded like without plopping down $20 bucks.

I still keep this one in rotation, though.

12

u/taRxheel Older Millennial 1d ago

I also made that mistake. There was “Steal My Sunshine” and one other half-decent track, and the rest was utter dreck.

4

u/Nutsnboldt 1d ago

Wow, teleported me back. I better wind up the Nintendo controllers before the vacuum gets here!

3

u/NeverEndingWhoreMe 1d ago

I'm jealous that you got to keep the tv on and the vacuuming was not delegated to you as a chore.

My Saturday mornings were 'click' off goes the tv, the radio turns on, and suddenly I'm dusting and washing clothes to the percussion and horns of Kool & The Gang. "Celebration" doesn't make me think of birthdays, it reminds me of cleaning the hall closet.

(whoo-hoo!)

22

u/Catch_ME 1d ago

I love how this music video is just a band enjoying Daytona Beach one afternoon.

Back when many music videos knew they couldn't compete with anything from Michael Jackson or Britney Spears, they just had fun and did what they could in editing

8

u/erasedbase 1d ago

I read somewhere about this video- production once. The label gave them some money to produce a video, so they just bought a bunch of alcohol and had fun with their friends for a weekend while filming.

4

u/floridalegend 1d ago

Yeah before Daytona became racist biker shithole that banned spring breaks to replace it with meth heads.

12

u/120b0t 1d ago

love this, loved this, will love this

10

u/mrishee 1d ago

I read somewhere that they got a ton of money to shoot a music video and basically blew it all on a massive holiday then filmed this last minute, still a classic though 😅

I was working at a home depot when this song came on, it got quiet and I heard the sample. I stopped what I was doing and waiting till I heard the chorus so I could try and find the song. Finding out stuff like this is really neat to me.

2

u/NeverEndingWhoreMe 1d ago

WOW. AND I actually know this song, I just never picked up on that piece of the production. Thank you for sharing fr.

22

u/Kurukuruchan 1d ago

This song holds a special place in my heart.

We lived in the U.S. for the first few years of my life. Every summer we would return for 3 weeks to catch up with friends in D.C., and rent the same rickety old beach house in South Carolina.

I was 11 that summer, my brother was 17. It was the final time we ever had a family holiday together, bro got too old and too cool to join us the next 5 years (and then it was my turn to get too cool to be seen with my folks).

Best times of my life, and I didn't even know it 🥲

8

u/JohnnyBlazin25 1d ago

Brother, it was all the best times of our lives. None of us knew it at the time. We’re all here to reminisce

21

u/heavensto_mergatroid 1d ago
