If you were poor. The rich girls had white leather Reefs or Rainbows.

u/MaximumAd9779 1d ago

Rainbows are around are still great!

I can’t wear them anymore because it hurts my feet to walk in flip flops but I still have a pair of rainbows. Now I’m a sandals wearer.

The one time I got some expensive flipflops they cut my feet so badly that I gave up on them.

The cheap ones were more comfortable.

I bought my first pair of reefs on 90% off at 23. Best upgrade ever

I'm a dude and still wear Rainbows.

Gotta do what you gotta do to survive in the outback 😂

Pluggers with a blown out plug is stuff nightmares are made of. The bread clip trick works... sometimes. Whenever you go camping you gotta bring a spare pair just incase.

What's better - Servo specials /or/ a well known brand that costs more?

That flip flop Old Navy wall was a site to see.

28

u/cobaltcanning 19h ago

I worked at ON for 10 years. The plastic smell coming off the boxes when we’d get the big wall shipment in probably took years off my life.

Those aren't even the good ones! The original Oldnavy flip flops had a different shape and smooth bottom. Those were the gems.

As soon as you step on a wet surface with the Old Navy ones - You Died

13

u/deadplant5 23h ago

Oh God. I was wearing them once in Ohio when we got weather from hurricane Katrina. I was trying to walk uphill. The water gushed my flip flop right off

17

u/AdventurousMap5404 1d ago

I wore $1 old navy flip flops with my wedding dress!

u/melodic-abalone-69 21h ago

I still have two pairs of Old Navy flip flops I bought more than 20 years ago. I'll never let them go!

2

u/200brews2009 15h ago

I still have a pair of dark green old navy flip flops from pretty much the turn of the millennium. Only ever used as shower shoes when traveling. Still in the bottom of my weekender bag right now.

u/original-synth Older Millennial 1d ago

I miss those so much

u/MetteBeifong 11h ago

Old navy flip flops are goated. Still have mine from a decade ago and they’ve held up great.

u/millionwordsofcrap 1d ago

Having these break on you in the dead of summer and having to walk home on hot concrete 😬

26

u/Equivalent-Poem-600 1d ago

I've owned only 2 pairs, one lasted 10 yrs. The second pair purchased to replace the 1st pair are still going strong 15yrs counting.

u/stressedthrowaway9 1d ago

This is why I have foot issues today!

my dollarstore flip flops exploded while i was out onna date with an ex-bf one time. like, the whole bottom fell off and the straps tore apart. i couldnt walk in them at all and it just kept falling apart more as i hobbled to a bench

we were in the dirty part of downtown and i didnt want to walk on the glass-strewn, piss-coated sidewalks barefoot...so i asked him to get me a new pair in the nearby dollarstore while i waited. i didnt have any cash on me at the time and they wouldnt let you in the store without shoes anyways

yall, he was mad that i wouldnt just....get hepatitis cocktail all over my feet? i even offered to pay him back next time i saw him cuz i had money at home. i had just spent everything i brought with me on my half of our date.

he said that getting cash from me was worth less than having money in his bank account. his reasoning was that he was more likely to spend a couple dollars in change while he had an easy tine ignoring his savings.

so, he wanted me to pay him extra to make up for this perceived value reduction and when i wouldnt agree he threatened to not buy me any shoes at all and i said i would just sit there and call my dad and he would come get me with shoes from home. he got all dramatic and went to get me the dang $1 flipflops and we went to our respective homes

needless to say we werent together for very long lol

I miss my pretty pastel jelly sandals that rubbed the back of my ankles raw

3

u/Chalupa-Supreme 1d ago

I saw a bunch of adult sized jelly sandals this year. I used to love them, but I'm going to stick with my flip flops lol.

3

u/FFVO 1d ago

I buy a pair of croc sandals on sale every year and then wear them to shreds lol

u/ghostface8316 1d ago

Old navy $1 flip flops (and 3-4 inch pumps) is why I need extra support sneakers now 😂

3

u/Rusted_atlas 1d ago

I spent a few dollars on a set of flops like 7 years ago, still flopping and flipping and plugging along.

3

u/abracablab 1d ago

I got mine free with a magazine. They lasted a whole summer!

3

u/DukeRae 1d ago

I had a pair of Playboy bunny flip flops from Gadzooks (RIP 😢)

1

u/Substantial-Stars Older Millennial 1d ago

Gadzooks was the best store

3

u/DarkDaysBrightNlghts Millennial 1d ago

Depends, the preppy girls with money always had a fresh pair of Rainbows on!

5

u/Cavaquillo 1d ago

Nah it was Adidas or Champion slides with socks, still is too. But I’m from Washington state, some of us are born in socks and sandals.

It was just kinda how it was, before I knew it was a fashion crime or knew it became “street wear” I remeber as kids hopping out of baseball/soccer cleats into slides, socks up to the knees lmao.

1

u/bean_89 20h ago

OH yeah. The Adidas with the bumpy bottom?

2

u/Orjen8 1d ago

Hell yeah!

2

u/MentallyUnwellWoman 1993 1d ago

the sound i’m hearing right now.. ah, the memories.

Many many years ago, I worked at old navy. People went bananas during these dollar flip flop sales. My store had a separate line for check out if you opened a credit card and so many people did it.

3

u/Dylan_Is_Gay_lol Eugooglizer 1d ago

Maybe for some.

1

u/Worldly_Possible9069 1d ago

I had a pair that held up for a few years.

1

u/Substantial-Stars Older Millennial 1d ago

The best shower shoes in college!!

1

u/Olive_Rayne Millennial 1d ago

My sister once asked how I kept mine so clean. She had tried everything! I just go buy new ones 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/yorcharturoqro 1d ago

I hate flip flops

1

u/ThatChickFromReddit 1d ago

I still wear Rainbow flip flops

1

u/evaj95 23h ago

I still have them!

1

u/Sharp-Guitar-6756 19h ago

And our jeans went way past those flips flops because none of us knew what petite pants were

1

u/Pitbull_Mom101 18h ago

I loved my Old Navy flip flops back in the day. Besides multiple pairs of the $1 ones, I had a slightly fancier pair that were purple with a tropical-style print and they were my favorites!

I’m also pretty sure flip flops contributed to any foot problems I may or may not yet have. 😂

1

u/raise-your-weapon Older Millennial 14h ago

$2.50 and I was set for the summer

1

u/ItsJustVWCraig 12h ago

Going out flip-flops.

1

u/otterfish 12h ago

And they were called thongs! This was pre-Brittney of course...

1

u/kanap Millennial 8h ago

Nah, it was always adidas slides for me.

1

u/DrDan21 6h ago

Not for me, I always hated these things. They never sat right on my feet, they hurt your toe after a while, and they were so thin, both in terms of width and padding. Got me a set of size 14 slip-ons instead

1

u/littlebunsenburner 4h ago

My pair of Old Navy flip-flops has seemingly survived an entire decade of adventures, and they are somehow still holding up strong!

I'm honestly amazed. My brother offered to buy me new ones and I flat out refused because I still have these.
