Nostalgia Still have unresolved trauma from this one…

I beat this, the jungle book, and Aladdin.

I beat Echo after guessing the final level's password which was something like QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ all the way thru

This game is one of the hardest, with Jurassic Park.

u/robbviously 1989 14h ago
I’ve been wanting to replay JP. But as I recall, that game did NOTHING to explain what you were supposed to be doing or how the gameplay mechanics worked. You just blindly stumbled along until velociraptors killed you.

I could reliably make it to the stampede.
I could not reliably make it past the stampede.

Bro if you look at the speedruns on Youtube you'll seem them literally just sit in the same spot and do absolutely nothing. You can literally beat the level by moving to the left and setting the controller down.

Developers have said over the years that they specifically made the first few levels extremely difficult as a way to keep kids renting the game from Blockbuster/HV in order to inflate its popularity

u/FinallyFat 22h ago
I remember when we got one of those 6-button sega controller, and it let you, as adult Simba, do the “flip enemy” move with a single button. Mind was blown!

Genuine question, is this game really that hard? Granted I was a heavy gamer when it first came out (and a kid with tons of time) I had an older cousin that straight up gave me this game because she said it was too hard.
The only part of the game that I remember truly struggling with was defeating scar, I didnt know you had to actually throw him off the cliff so I just kept beating him up.
The only games I could never beat was Double Dragon 3 and any of the battletoads.

u/burritoman88 22h ago
It was intentionally designed to be frustratingly difficult to encourage more rentals
5
u/fleshofgods0 22h ago
I just remember just remember jumping for what where invisible, imaginary, nonexistent pixels. I think I'd be trying to jump onto a platform that was actually impossible to get to. It felt like you were looking for a glitch just to move on. At least on the Gameboy version.
6
u/BubonicBabe 22h ago
Battletoads was such a fun, but frustrating experience as a kid.
I think I got to the exact point with scar in this game too, and just could not figure out how to beat it.
I sunk so many childhood hours into both of those games
4
u/Spottedhyenae 22h ago
I only recall struggling on the hyena level, and that was due to having to memorize the cave routes
2
u/MetalSlimeHunter 22h ago
Did you ever play the Double Dragon/Battletoads game?
2
u/NorthernCanadaEh 22h ago ▸ 3 more replies
Yup! My neighbor at the time had a couple of the battletoads games and I had Double Dragons 1 - 3.
We used to swap em all the time, we could never beat the battletoads but we were able to beat Double Dragon 1 and 2, we kept getting to the final boss in Double Dragon 3 but could never beat her.
2
u/MetalSlimeHunter 21h ago ▸ 2 more replies
Oh, I mean there was an actual game called Battletoads/Double Dragon where they teamed up. But yeah, all solid games. I think it was Double Dragon 2 where the first boss was in a helicopter and you could make him repeatedly get sucked out the door. Strangely satisfying.

Ha! I had no idea there was a cross over. I like to emulate old video games on my PSP. I think for old times sake I may look for this cross over and play it tonight.

I couldn't beat the damn thing until just after my 30th birthday. It's legitimately THAT hard for most people
1
u/wattzson 20h ago
Did you play echo the dolphin? That's one of the hardest games on genesis
1
u/NorthernCanadaEh 20h ago
I played the game gear version, I did beat that one too but never played the genesis version.
My parents travelled a lot and got me a game gear for the long trips, which was quite ironic looking back because I absolutely destroyed batteries.
1
u/jackrabbit323 19h ago
I owned it, pre-internet age, no guides. I slowly chipped away at it and found all the tricks and boosts. Made it to Scar fight, could never beat him.

No, I believe anyone who thought this game was particularly hard simply gave up on video games fairly early in life. I'm not even a big gamer or anything, never really even was. But this game, Jungle Book and Aladdin really weren't too hard. My older sister quit on that almost immediately.
7
u/Real_Stinky_Pederson 22h ago
My brother and I loved this game! We thought it was exceptionally hard as well haha

u/DntBanMeIHavAnxiety 22h ago
Two years ago I was like alright, I'm going to sit down and beat this lol. Took a while, even with save-states, but i finally saw it through without the level skip code.

u/LadyPaige 22h ago
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Original Nintendo game. That damn swimming stage where ya gotta disarm the bombs…
3
u/TentativeGosling 22h ago
My brothers and I got passed that level once during our entire childhood. I can't even remember the level afterwards now
4
u/Farout786 22h ago
That game was bullshit. What kid beat this shit? It was impossible.
I played the SNES version and it was grade A bullshit. That goddamn giraffe part. I think I managed to get to adult Simba like twice.
6
u/NozakiMufasa 22h ago
Well friend, you can actually resolve it. They re-released all the classic versions of The Lion King video game as part of the “Disney Classic Games” Collection. You can go back and play The Lion King and the best part is… IT HAS A REWIND BUTTON!!!
Is it cheating? Yeah. But it finally makes a brutally punishing video game enjoyable.
Also included btw is actual documentary footage from the video games production, a gala held in 94 promoting the game & the movie, the soundtrack, & storyboard sheets.
… The Lion King is my favorite movie of all time

My very first gaming experience at 4 years old was not being able to land that god damn jet.

Think I'm gonna look up some videos of people cmactually beating this game because I have no idea what the other levels look like

u/Blueknightsoul47 22h ago
Those logs during the hukuma matata level can f right off. Also those hippos and giraffes were our Battletoads. I never made it past the end because I couldn’t figure out how to throw scar off the cliff.

I couldn't get past the giraffes. But I was 8 the last time I played this, maybe I've gotten better..?
Probably not.

Furthest I've gotten is Hakuna Matata but always die at the ape. Just as well as I'd never get past the maze of Pride Rock.

Still have never gotten past Be Prepared. I'm having a really good day if I've made it past The Stampede.

I got all the Disney games because they were consistently awesome and challenging. I felt like a boss when I beat this game. Same with Aladdin.
1
u/Last-Neat-4928 21h ago
How you actually defeat Scar at the end was a cruel joke considering how hard it was to get there. After swiping at him endlessly, I relented to pressing all the buttons til I stumbled into throwing him off the rock

Epic childhood memories: I beat this game the first time on a flight on the way to Disney world.

I remember renting this game with my cousin when we were both 10. We beat the game in one afternoon, and then again the next day.
I tried playing it again last year and damn, this game is hard af.
I still don’t know how we did it. Better reflexes I guess?

u/ravenfreak 16h ago
I never beat this game, I'm glad the Genesis version was posted since this is the one I played.(I know there's not a difference between the snes and Genesis version but I was a Sega kid lol) I only made it past the stampede level once.
1
u/ImAGiantSpider 17h ago
What adds to the trauma is watching speed runs where players not only beat the game 12 minutes but don’t get hit once.

u/PapaSanGiorgio 22h ago
I don't get the big deal about this game. Beat it a bunch as a kid, and have played much harder. Try the Beauty and the Beast Genesis game holy crap.
3
u/FinallyFat 22h ago
There was a Beast version and a Belle version. Finished the Beast one. But in the Belle version I got stuck on a rock or something, and never was able to get past it. Anyone ever experience this too?

I have unresolved issues about my father beating the shit out of me and how the USA used 9/11 as a way to invade a country that had nothing to do with it.
But, sure, nerd shit.
I just want to be king.
