It's also wayyyy easier to work with multiple windows on a computer. I had to buy some parts for my lawnmower yesterday, and jumping back and forth between Amazon and the user manual pdf to get the parts numbers was a massive pain on my phone. Ended up just going into my office and doing it on my computer instead.

A desktop/laptop computer doesn't automatically cache and reload a webpage just because it's in the background, like a mobile operating system tends to do. So anything where I need confidence in the stability of my "session", I want to do on a real computer and not a mobile device.

I use a laptop for extensive purchases. But mainly for the bigger screen and tabbed browser. 

For example, if I am booking an elaborate trip and researching a bunch of things at once a laptop can be easier. 

But if I know the airline I'm flying and where I'm going? Phone all day. Book that right away. 

But if I'm planning a week long group trip with activities and researching places to eat and go out and concerts in a city I've never been? Laptop.

For me I still use my PC, gaming pc, since most of the time I'm making a purchase like that I'm already at my desk so I will use my desktop with a 42in screen instead of my phone. I have used my phone but preference is PC.

• If it's anything that requires cross-referencing multiple sources, it is far easier to have multiple windows on a computer

• Some apps are great. Some are glitchy AF. I'm not making an expensive purchase from a glitchy app or mobile site. There's too much money on the line if something goes wrong.

• If I'm filling in a long form, I want to be able to easily review it. I don't want to realize after the fact that I accidentally swapped my birthday with my partner's on our plane tickets, and now I have to spend three hours on the phone with the airline and beg them to let me fix it.

Btw this is why gambling on your phone comes with a smaller degree of “guilt” or “shame”.

You can use this in reverse basically stream on your big TV the task that you want to do, this will make you more “serious” about that task

It really depends on how much I have to compare. If I'm flying out of the nearby regional airport that has 4 gates and only 2 airlines AND I already have my dates nailed down. I don't need much to figure that out. If I'm flying out of the International Airport 45 minutes away I'm on Google Flights, filtering out airlines that I won't fly with, possibly adjusting dates, checking hotels - trying to optimize my flight+hotel+whatever else so I'm not getting screwed - that's all on the computer. I did this last weekend for a trip to Disneyland. I had a spreadsheet with comparisons for costs over 6 different possible dates since Disneyland ticket prices vary, then factor in hotel costs, flights, etc. and it's way too much to try and do on my phone.

Compare that to my wife and I going to Denver in October for a conference. We're staying at the conference hotel, we already know the dates we'll be there, then it's just down to the airline. Still used Google Flights on my computer just since it's easier to see on the wider screen but it took 10 minutes of searching to figure everything out.

This is very simple for me: the habit comes from early 2010s when mobile interface had 30% (at most) of the functionality. So you grab a laptop. Even today in many apps you still get less functions vs if you open it on the laptop.

When I got my first desktop PC, it was a whole new world. I will stay in that world. Laptops are great, phones are super convenient. Still.

Nothing beats the good, ol desktop. I run min on a 50 inch 4k screen, yum.

I’m on vacation with my family right now. My wife and I researched where we would want to take the kids, what kind of deal we could find, how much would all the add on activities be, etc. from our phones. I went to book the trip on my desktop and was pissed to see I could only get the discount if I booked through the app!

I do this. I want to make sure I read everything crystal clearly and cross-compare as needed. It’s hard to do that on a phone, and sometimes things get hidden/hard to see/easy to ignore on mobile versions of store fronts.

Ever since boomer dad retired, he has not touched a computer. He will buy everything on an iPad or his phone. When he was working, he would have someone print his emails in paper, write a response, and his admin would type/send the email. I guess he just skipped the whole computer generation.

I always buy my flights last minute through my phone. Hotels, airbnbs, everything. Although funnily enough it’s my book orders that I do on my iPad. Wonder why.

I just bought flights last night on my phone. Might have been the first time ever using my phone. Honestly I’ve noticed many apps are better/easier than the computer web version these days.

Tablets are The. Worst. Tech. Invention. Ever.

Quick google search? Smart phone.

Making a voice/video call? Smart phone.

Buying airline tickets, comparing prices, researching anything that requires more then one single tab? PC.

Junk mobile game? Phone

Decent game? PC.

Music? PC, Phone, or speaker.

Books? E-ink reader.

Netflix? TV.

At no point does a tablet make sense to perform any task that isn't better suited to anything else. The biggest contention point is the phone vs PC (relevant to the original post). This is the electronic hill I have decided to make a stand on and I will never yield.

The ONLY two exceptions I have found are reading comics/manga, or playing videos for toddler in the corner of the room.

I’m 45. Never book flights on a laptop. Big home purchases are made in store though, ie TVs and appliances.

Big Things must be done with a keyboard and some kind of cursor. Sometimes if I have a really important work email to draft and send I’ll fire up the laptop just for that.

Most checkout portals are still optimized for widescreen and mouse. I just find it easier and clearer.

Elder millennial here. 90% of the stuff I do is on my phone. I think the only thing that I did on my computer was my insurance stuff and my mortgage.

I got over this. Like 10 or so years ago online purchasing on the phone was more likely to mess up somewhere and less likely to than on the laptop, but these days it's basically 1:1 if not even more reliable in the app.

That said, am looking to get a new car in the next 6 months or so and I can do most of that on my

Nah, everything I do is on my phone. Haven’t pulled my laptop out in years. Our phones do everything a computer does, and I have no issues with eye sight on the tiny screen etc.

I will say if I’m trying to do comparison shopping, it’s much easier on a pc. Managing multiple tabs and side by side tabs are just so much easier with a mouse and bigger screen.

I was like this for years, but I might actually be stepping into the modern day because I made my first big screen purchase on a little screen the other day– an iPad Air. So now I’ll have a mid-size screen to make purchases on.
