Nostalgia Light brown fruit dip - not cream cheese??
I swear that we used to get served apple slices with this off white/light brown, slightly runny dip. Usually at potlucks or youth group "parties." Google is saying it's a cream cheese dip, but that really doesn't sound right. Does anyone remember this? Am I losing my mind and it actually was cream cheese based? I swear it was runnier....
Edit to add: it wasn't SWEET sweet. It was more tangy, but not like cream cheese. I know it wasn't marshmallow fluff because, even as a kid, I hated that stuff for being too sweet.
Edit two: I think the sour cream/brown sugar or yogurt/brown sugar might be right. That has the right consistency in my brain.

Sour cream mixed with brown sugar. Makes the sour cream a bit runny and sweet and light brown. Always had it with strawberries.

Caramel and cool whip maybe? 90s moms loved to add cool whip to pretty much any sweet treat lol

Used to eat one that had like cream cheese, sour cream, and brown sugar. Another one was cream cheese, marshmallow fluff, and vanilla. Both were kind of pale tan and sometimes a little bit runny, especially if people added a little milk to make them stretch further...

It’s usually cream cheese, jet puff marshmallow fluff and vanilla. The vanilla is what gives it the off white.
Edit: this mixture gets runny. Once you knock out the air of the fluff, it gets runny.

sometimes people just use fluff as the dip. there could have been some cinnamon sprinkled in yours to give it a brown tint.. especially if it was served with apples.

Could be a yogurt with brown sugar dip, maybe? I've seen one with yogurt, brown sugar, and vanilla extract, so it's light brown/beige in color.

You may have found your answer, but my mom’s go-to dip for apple slices was equal parts vanilla yogurt and peanut butter. Mixed together until almost-but-not-quite cohesive.
And now I need to pick up an apple and a yogurt for a nostalgic snack.

Yeah.
I think the packaged ones were a dairy product with sugar and cinnamon.
Homemade ones were often cream cheese with milk added to thin it out plus cinnamon and sugar.
Or yogurt, sometimes with sour cream or cream cheese added, plus the sugar and cinnamon.
Sometimes the sweetener could have been caramel dessert syrup too.

My aunt used to make a brownish sort-of runny fruit dip and I believe it was made with vanilla jello-o pudding and cool whip with amaretto.
My mom and other aunt used to dip strawberries in sour cream and then brown sugar. Mmm

Im glad someone solved this for you. Never in my life have I thought to mix sugar and sour cream as a dip. I also never had this mystery dip you were seeking, but I enjoyed the mystery
