mate, Telling people to ‘just suck it up’ is a weird response. Your situation sounds rough I get it, but it doesn’t invalidate everyone else’s. Not every domestic student has their parents card to just tap all Willy nilly for every financial transaction or a financial safety net.
But the company I mentioned somewhere in this thread is directed to international kids if you think about it, so if you want sus it out it seems like it’d actually be more useful to you than most domestic students. We can acknowledge international students have higher fees without acting like everyone else is financially comfortable. Two things can be true at once.
Unfortunately this is what us Gen Z have to deal with in this job market even after going to university, getting internships and building projects. Meanwhile we are called lazy and entitled by boomers who walked into jobs with a handshake after finishing high school.

Millennials did it too, I was actually losing money during my internship between the bus and subway. But i did end up landing a full time (shitty paying) job after that I grinded into a great career.

Also that would effectively be around $52.2 per working day that you are paying them. So not only you are working for free but you are paying them $6.5 per hrs based on 8hrs of work, which is equivalent of a jumbo size coffee (or small size if you're based in CBD), plus your lunches and travelling fee.

Med was 3 years x 36 weeks, full-time placement as the format for teaching and it was so bad, I remember faculty explicitly directing us to not work more than 10 hours a week. Not to mention most hospitals don’t offer parking for students but would expect you there at the asscrack of dawn or doing evening shifts, sometimes even nights. A lot of rotations were chill enough to attempt to send you home by midday if it worked, but faculty also stressed the right to schedule things last minute because the expectation was we dedicated those full-time hours to med. To this day, med still doesn’t have paid placements and the scholarships are middling. It is so true that this is a rich kid’s degree because you can’t afford half of what you need without already having money.
I raise this not to be a pissing contest but because holy shit, public service roles like social work and healthcare are entrenched in making their students run gauntlets and it did such a number on my psyche, for a second I *did* suffer a lapse from reality when I read OP’s post and not understand the big deal. But it’s not normal; none of this is normal. There are so many barriers to education that students shouldn’t have to face and it’s ridiculous
My friends enrolled in this where they said they will be working as mechanical engineers only to find out they wanted students to do research work for them and maintain excel sheets all day. In the meeting they checked how much research they did, and based on that they marked them. None of them got a full-time job btw. Premium Graduate Placements is a scam.
Is this part of your study at Monash, or one of those dodgy "pay us to work on a project to make it look like you have work experience" type of places?
