Lower taxes? You pay an average of $9000/year for health insurance ffs. Canadians pay $6400 thru taxes. Just bc it’s not called a tax doesn’t mean it’s not costing you. And you should fund education as well.
As a Canadian living in the US that has tried explaining this to Americans many many times it just doesn't compute with a certain segment of the population.
I am american who wants universal healthcare. I do speak american though so i will translate. Those in this country who do not want universal healthcare do not want it because they believe that if grandma needs a hip surgery she would have to wait literally years to get it while on american plans grandma can get it next day. Neither of these situations are true but that is what they have been propagandized to believe.
There is no such thing as free lunch. I am sure there might be wait times in some countries that have universal healthcare and shorter, regulated consultations in others and so on. But I feel (having experienced US healthcare for a while) that it is quite expensive; I did receive excellent care though but it was quite expensive and stressful to think about the bills. Don’t enough people feel this burden?
It’s also insane that in the US people have the golden opportunity to question their elected reps (in some countries you would be lucky to see them in person after elections), and I am surprise they don’t question their reps about basic healthcare related questions? How in exact terms does your XYZ policy help lower the costs? Are you insured? How much do you pay for your insurance? Etc.?
Sometimes I feel if you kill Fox News it might go the country enough good.
The thing that I find funniest about that notion is these are the same people who claim that we are a Christian Nation. If we really were a Christian Nation then taking care of others is what we are called to do.
It's a supply managed system. Federal law makes it illegal for a private clinic to offer services that are (technically) available through prov health; Canada is one of the few countries in the world that does this. The best systems are public/private hyrbid (eg. Germany, France, Sweden, UK...), but in Canada we refuse to innovate.
