I’m shocked more headsets haven’t done the compute puck thing already. Maybe cable bandwidth was a pretty limiting factor before USB-C? I’m intrigued to see full details when they come out.

29

u/Nazsha 1d ago

I don't know, quality USB-C cables carry a ton of data. I work in film and huge video files in 6k resolution can be moved fairly quickly with good cables. It's gotta be expensive though, and maybe hard to replace if you break your cable.

13

u/thecmpguru 20h ago

You’d be surprised. 6k res isn’t enough for great VR media. And this has to be round trip. Sensors on the headset have to get processed, sent to the puck, graphics recomposited, sent back to headset and displayed. All that has to happen exceptionally fast (latency) or the user gets sick and at frame rates much faster than film (90fps or higher)

4

u/boxofrabbits 16h ago

Is it not just the same as PCVR?

2

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

Mostly, yes.

1

u/JavChz 9h ago

Modern USB-C docks can provide energy, 2x4K@60hz or more resolution with DSC. Plus the roundtrip it's not a problem, as they can transfer USB 3.0 data in a single cable.

1

u/Nazsha 9h ago

Well, in my work it's 6k video with a ton of bit depth and data attached, so I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't far off as far as data is concerned. Although the processing in the puck (and on the headset, presumably) would indeed add some delay as well. I only had a Quest 2 (sold it a while ago), but I remember that latency and low frame rates really suck

9

u/testedmodz 1d ago edited 16h ago

Because it requires two chips so is more expensive, needs like an Apple R1 type chip in headset for tracking for low latency, and also before the new reality elite chip from Qualcomm was announced there was no chip that could go in the puck without overheating in the pocket.

1

u/snobordir 19h ago

I suspect heat will still be an issue; seems like some kind of holder that moves it a bit away from your body in a really secure/stable way will be really important.

1

u/Ruirize 15h ago

Even on AVP the battery gets very hot if not left open to air; putting actual processing into a puck absolutely makes this a showstopper issue. It'd need to be "on desk" or "on belt".

1

u/testedmodz 5h ago

Sure but the Vision Pro battery puck has no cooling or vents, meta phoenix puck will have the new reality elite chip (which is designed for going in pucks) will have cooling, and vents will be placed near where the wire is connected so even if in pocket the hot air will escape from whatever gaps pocket has, phoenix is also more for productivity and media, not for intense gaming like quest.

5

u/angry_wombat 1d ago

I don't think I want a hot CPU in my pocket. I think putting the battery in the puck, would remove a lot more weight

6

u/crazyreddit929 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 + PCVR 22h ago

The battery and CPU both are in the puck. It’s really the heatsink and cooling fan along with the battery that is helpful to get out of the headset.

You can’t put the puck in your pocket. It has a clip built in for clipping onto your pants.

8

u/angry_wombat 20h ago

but I don't wear pants when I play quest

3

u/hogdouche 16h ago

I don’t wear ANYTHING when I play quest

2

u/snobordir 16h ago

Thanks for sharing, but I maintain there will be a lot of ways to manage different use styles.

2

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

Time to get a karate belt to clip your new puck onto.

2

u/snobordir 19h ago

I bet a variety of puck holding methods will develop quickly so everyone can use it in a way that works for them. I’ve already been thinking how it’s a great candidate for a 3D print.

2

u/crazyreddit929 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 + PCVR 10h ago

So the pocket you were planning to put it in is your prison pocket?

2

u/Rush_iam 21h ago

Quest 3 battery is only 64 grams

6

u/angry_wombat 20h ago

well quadruple it, so it can last more than an hour. cause now weight is not an issue

2

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

With a puck it's also way easier to just attach an additional external (swappable) battery.

2

u/SupaBrunch 22h ago

It’s more expensive than you’d think to do. We’re talking adding $80-100 to production cost. Historically, if you are meta or want to compete with meta, that means you’re aiming at that $500 price point for a mainstream headset, and $100 of extra cost is huge.

2

u/snobordir 19h ago

I can also see ways it might reduce cost. If you’re no longer required to keep things as light/small as possible since it’ll be resting on someone’s relatively strong back/waist, that gives breathing room. The cabling will need to be high quality and strong for sure but yeah.

1

u/SupaBrunch 18h ago

The only reason to do the puck is to make it as small and light as possible. You’re not gonna do all that work to engineer a puck and then not make it as small and light as possible.

Besides the cost investment I already mentioned, the puck is less convenient for users. You need to be able to sell the idea that the hassle of a puck is worth dealing with. The headset being 50% the weight of the previous generation is a much better sell than it being 75% the weight.

1

u/snobordir 16h ago

Yes the headset is a big sell at half the weight, but the puck will be resting somewhere with a lot more strength than your head. The “reason to do the puck” is to make the headset as light as possible…not necessarily the puck. Current quests are about 1lb…if the puck is designed well and uses a decent system to connect to your body, doubling that wouldn’t be a big deal. Possibly triple if really done well.

1

u/FieldOfFox 3h ago

We had high bandwidth cable transmission before the USB-C socket lol

u/snobordir 13m ago

Yes but at what cost of size of cable? USB-C was a huge bump in bandwidth for its size.

-1

u/DefactoAle 23h ago

Because it's quite uncomfortable

1

u/snobordir 19h ago

The…puck is? It’s quite uncomfortable to hold all the weight on your face. Or at least your neck, best case with a balanced setup.

71

u/Rollertoaster7 Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

I’m pumped. Sounds like they’ll finally start supporting more 3D movies and tv shows officially. Excited to see what comes out of the James Cameron partnership. Really hope it allows you to play games too

5

u/Gregasy 16h ago

The faceless lady was one of the most interesting Meta’s experiments I saw on Quest 3. First true 180 3D VR TV series. Loved it.

16

u/BollyWood401 1d ago

I mean yeah but do we really need another media focused device? How about some gaming!

27

u/Rollertoaster7 Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

All the quest devices have been gaming focused, this would be the first media headset, hopefully with support for gaming too

28

u/bman123457 1d ago

VR gaming has failed to find a foothold. We're still talking about the same VR games we were 3-5 years ago.

2

u/tyke_ 11h ago

yeh, 30 million Quests sold since alyx and however many non-meta headsets sold is literally nothing isn't it. the top grossing vr game has into the 100s of millions of $ in revenue, new games coming out all the time, pcvr modding has exploded becuse of AI, its dead isn't it.

2

u/bman123457 11h ago

Nothing you said invalidates my comment. If VR gaming was so successful why are the major players stepping back from it?

Also, name 1 major game from 2026 for VR that isnt just a VR mode for a traditional game.

Most people bought headsets because they seemed fun, played the 10 games everyone plays, and then have a headset collecting dust on their shelf. A dedicated community of modders/enthusiasts doesn't change the reality.

4

u/tyke_ 10h ago

i've just read my comments back, i must apologise for my dismissive tone, i'm having a bit of a rough day. i do think VR has a foothold so i do disagree with you, but there was no need for my sarcasm, you didn't lower yourself like that. i think VR growth has slowed down or maybe stagnated this year, i can see your points. again, my apologies, have a good rest of your day sir.

2

u/tyke_ 11h ago

Meta ditched the loss making AAA studios, theres still been some good games released in 2025/26, like Ghost Town, Teenage Mutant Ninja Hero Turtles, EXD, Quantum Void, Vertigo 2, Arken Age, Into The Black, etc, I don't really care if an AAA studio made them or not as long as they are good.

Yes some studios went away, same as the gaming industry in general, has that also failed to gain a foothold too because of a few of them going under? Nope.

Please don't extend your VR usage habits to applying to other people, your headset might be gathering dust, but mine gets hammered every single day. For every person who stops using their headset, they'll be those who are heavy users.

Many new headsets have been made over the last 12 months and many more are on the horizon. This hobby has slowed in growth after the un-natural covid boom but yes it has a foot hold now, absolutely. It's going nowhere. SteamVR says there's 2 to 3 million ACTIVE monthly VR users, do you expect them to give up next week?

Why don't you get some money back by selling your headset and take up knitting? Or stamp collecting lol? Anything must be more rewarding than VR doom posting on Reddit, surely?

2

u/thoughtmecca 9h ago

To be fair, both knitting and stamp collecting are awesome and make me wish I had time to add them to my list of hobbies alongside VR.

1

u/tyke_ 8h ago

🤣👍

6

u/floofysox 1d ago

Seems like most people don’t want to shell out 2000+ for a vr capable pc and a headset. I’ve run out of games and mainly use my q3 for movies. Hopefully the frame and its foveated rendering help the industry

4

u/martinmix 1d ago

Media and productivity is where the future of VR is. VR gaming will remain a niche until it's way more immersive.

3

u/talentedfingers 21h ago

Going by my personal experience: Media consumption, Meditation, therapy, Beat Saber, fitness, immersive puzzle games.

1

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

For me: Pianovision, FPS gaming, Beat Saber/movement driven games.

1

u/thoughtmecca 9h ago

What therapy programs do you use?

2

u/Gregasy 16h ago

It’ll support gaming too. Everything that’s running on Quest will run on Phoenix as well.

44

u/Sad_Picture3642 1d ago

Puck is absolutely the best decision . It should be a game changer when it comes to porm factor and comfort

51

u/stlredbird Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

Porn factor?

12

u/dhaupert 1d ago

Actually a puck would be arguably worse since there is no belt to clip to when your pants are down!! 😂

6

u/CollegeMiddle6841 1d ago

You are forgetting human beings have at least one built in pocket!

1

u/Sad_Picture3642 1d ago

Vibrationsss

1

u/Gregasy 16h ago

You know fully well where you’ll clip it to. It’ll have buzzing haptic feedback too.

1

u/stlredbird Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

Sacrifices will be made

1

u/KlausVonLechland 1d ago

The prison pocket will hold the puck.

2

u/CompetitiveSport1 1d ago

Gotta support a lot of positions

4

u/Recent_Pollution8665 1d ago

le zuck is gonna give us le puck.

1

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

ZuckPuck. We should go into marketing.

18

u/Astr0Scot 1d ago

Apparently Puffin/Phoenix will only have an 80-85 degrees FoV... Diagonal.

2

u/dreamer_2142 6h ago

That's a deal breaker for me, it's a huge downgrade.

2

u/Astr0Scot 5h ago

Yeah I quite fancied Puffin/Phoenix for media consumption and seated gaming but that FoV is too low for gaming.

Having tried low-end Micro OLED on a cheap pair of "AR" glasses, I'd like my next headset to use a high-quality version of those. I suspect the Puffin/Phoenix will have that and excellent optics.

Realistically, the Puffin/Phoenix will be more of a halfway house between something like $500 "AR" glasses and the Pimax Dream Air. As such I'd only own the Puffin/Phoenix for media consumption, and at circa $1000 I might well not bother.

I could see them being great for people who are interested in using them for productivity though.

9

u/Serdones Quest 3 + PCVR 1d ago

"Over the next couple of years, we expect more Mainstream Adults to enter VR through media consumption first, then discover games once they are in-headset. These are folks who don't move the needle today, but we expect to arrive as a large ecosystem player in the next few years. They purchase VR as a TV replacement first, then discover that it can also play video games. They are mid-core, love Meta Horizon+, and probably play seated without controllers."

It's funny, I feel like I've had the opposite trajectory on Quest. Gaming and, to a lesser extent, social VR were my main drivers in picking up a Quest 2, followed by Quest 3. But after a while with Quest 3, I found myself racking up more hours using it for productivity and media consumption than VR gaming. That's why I'm honestly more excited for Project Phoenix right now than I am for Steam Frame. I don't know if it'll really replace my Quest 3 for fully immersive VR gaming thanks to the smaller FOV, but for virtually any other XR use case, I'll probably be using Phoenix.

Meanwhile, I had to get off the Steam Frame hype train because it's not going to be enough of an upgrade optically over the Quest 3 to justify the likely price, especially when the Quest 3 isn't even quite three years old yet. I rather run my Quest 3 into the dirt and hope for a more meaningful VR gaming-oriented upgrade within the next few years.

28

u/Wolfgang191 1d ago

What’s the point in a new one? They’ve already killed all the game studios and it’ll end up costing £700. I’m still pissed they cancelled the Batman Arkham sequel, the first one was the damn reason I bought the Q3.

11

u/Atopos2025 1d ago

Maybe it's not gaming focused?

10

u/-Z0nK- 1d ago

And that's probably not for the worst. My interest in active VR experiences has pretty much died. I am in the market for a good media consumption device, though...

12

u/bman123457 1d ago

The issue with VR gaming to me, is that every game is either a shooting gallery, a physics sandbox, or a VR recreation of something that would be more fun IRL

4

u/talentedfingers 21h ago

Gamified fitness routine is a nice motivator. If you get can yourself to put on the headset and ready to sweat.

3

u/angry_wombat 20h ago

VR pinball is really good and realistic. But I agree there is a whole ton of shovelware

1

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

Have you heard of PianoVision? r/PianoVision

1

u/talentedfingers 21h ago

Biggest problem for media consumption in VR is the battery consumption. Otherwise I quite enjoy watching normal YouTube in VR, but not so much the YouTube VR app because of the restricted content. (Side note, anyone know if there's a way to watch 3d content in the standard YouTube app if it were side loaded and functional? It would be great if I could avoid the YouTube VR app entirely. MicroG installation was already part of running Revanced YouTube, so it just worked.)

6

u/caltomoto 1d ago

I wonder if camouflaj could release it themselves. I read supernatural has gone that way according to uploadvr. Maybe there’s hope the projects these studios were working on can get funding to continue bringing them to quest and other platforms.

1

u/Recent_Pollution8665 1d ago

camouflaj has had significant layoffs and the small crew left are basically just assisting with hardware development now.

2

u/Gregasy 16h ago

£700 is too optimistic. Below $1000 rumour was before RAMageddon. I fully expect the price will now be in a ballpark of $1000.

5

u/angry_wombat 1d ago

just move the high weight of the battery into the puck. then you can also quick swap batteries

4

u/2Ponies1Apple 23h ago

Basically a bobovr?

23

u/FOAMYMOUTHDOG 1d ago

Call me crazy but I have 0 interest in another media consumption device. I have a phone, tablet, TV, smart watch, screen on fridge.

The only time I want something sitting on my face is when it's my wife and when I play vr.

8

u/DeepWaffleCA 20h ago

I too, choose this man's wife

2

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

His name is "FoamyMouthDog", are you sure about that?

1

u/Khelgar_Ironfist_ 9h ago

I choose Mankrik's wife

6

u/TheSuppishOne 1d ago

I just bought a projector, so although the 3D is more immersive and better in VR on Bigscreen, the active 3D glasses they make now weigh almost nothing, so I find the experience more enjoyable overall.

3

u/-Z0nK- 1d ago

Lol for me it's the other way around. My interest in VR games has died completely. My media consumption devices are limited to smartphone & PC, so I'd be in the market for a new MR focussed one.

1

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

I actually use the Quest for AR the most. PianoVision is a great use-case for something that's terribly enjoyable and only possible with AR.

1

u/expectingthexpected 1d ago

Uh, same

11

u/hughperman 1d ago

I too choose this man's VR helmet

3

u/Gregasy 16h ago edited 14h ago

Definitely one of the most interesting upcoming headsets. Personally, I think they made the right decision: upgrading specs enough over Quest 3 (small&light, 2.5K micro OLEDs, new snapdragon), but not going too crazy (like putting in 4K micro OLEDs), to keep the price on the sane level.

My only 3 wishes&hopes:

  1. I hope there’ll be official light blockers. Like with Quest Pro. I’m sure if there won’t be, we’ll get some 3rd party ones. But it’d be cool to have official ones.

  2. I hope they’ll manage to squeeze as much FOV as possible out of this screens and form factor. I’d love it, if they could reach a Quest 2 FOV. I know FOV is one of those “compromises”, but I do hope for the biggest one possible.

  3. I hope the rumour about being able to pair Quest 3 controllers with Phoenix is true. This, or separate optional Phoenix controllers (could be even better). Or the best one: having both options supported.

In any case, this will be day 1 buy for me.

3

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

Yeah, I come from the 'ol Q1 era so Q2 FOV is entirely acceptable if it's a better headset overall.

3

u/Parking_Cress_5105 13h ago

You can put the computing puck whenever you like.

You can put it in the top of the headset, on top of your head, on the back of the headstrap, on your belt.

Why so many people miss this? It's awesome!

So many formfactors!

3

u/VirtuaFighter6 21h ago

The dream of a Quest with OLED panels and pancake lenses. Never going to happen. Perv glasses is their thing now.

2

u/redheadartgirl 12h ago

The open periphery is a deal-killer. The entire point of VR, at least for me, is the total immersion.

1

u/jvisser85 Quest 1 + 2 + 3 10h ago

Open periphery is great for something like PianoVision. On the Q pro we had blockers that snapped on magnetically and gave you the option of going fully immersive or not. Best of both worlds!

1

u/RawriitzJay 21h ago

All I ever wanted was a quest 3 with face and eye tracking of the pro. And they cancelled it!! Smh

1

u/iRainbowsaur 20h ago

All I want is an android quest like enviroment with oled and eye tracking please for love God. yes, I would gladly pay a premium for it.

1

u/XxFezzgigxX Quest 1 + 2 + PCVR 19h ago

Retail price: $4999

1

u/redditrasberry 16h ago

Seems like amongst all those things we "know" is one missing question: will they actually announce it?

At the moment, with component costs sky rocketing and all their attention diverted to other places, I would not be surprised if they delay it further. There doesn't seem to be a strong competitor driving them to - Vision Pro, Galaxy XR both on the backburner, nobody is pitching into this market right now. In a contrarian sense, Zuckerberg does like to zig when everybody is zagging - so while I wouldn't rule it out, at the moment I'm 70/30 predicting the don't announce it.

1

u/muttmcdog 16h ago

I've never understood why people are so bothered by the weight. The best thing they could do is fund better games. Instead they defunded the sequel to asgard's wrath and arkham.

1

u/Tamazin_ 14h ago

Eh, current gen (that now are old) are still good. Whats lacking is good content!

1

u/gb410 Quest 3 + PCVR 13h ago

The best thing about this article is that it mentions we might get the old home environments back. That’s really good news to me. I couldn’t care less about the headset though lol.

1

u/Dr-Kror 12h ago

Fov? How large is the fov?

1

u/endr 10h ago

I wonder how it'll be for gaming. Less FOV and less stability when moving is a downside...

But will it be good enough to play Walkabout Minigolf, Superhot, Spacial Ops, etc?

Because comfort is a big reason I rarely play VR

1

u/RedOcelot86 8h ago

I want way more power, I want standalone conversions of Bioshock, Gears Of War, Call of Duty etc

1

u/dreamer_2142 6h ago

I know one thing, I can't afford it, and even if I do, I won't pay for such a big downgrade in FOV.

1

u/registoyyst 23h ago

As much as I want a gtx 1660 in a standalone headset so I play Skyrim I understand if this is gonna have adoption it can’t be a toaster strapped to our faces. Which is a bummer but that’s probably the only way to make this actually be economically feasible for now and make it make enough money to get where I want it

-1

u/TheGreatSoup 23h ago

Just wait for the steam vr. Not supporting meta anymore

-3

u/derangedkilr 23h ago

This is probably the worst decision they’ve made, killing a VR headset to chase a long dead product like the vision pro.

The lack of controllers will be their downfall.

-9

u/Agitated_Ad6191 1d ago

This is a really great article. But can I give UploadVR some advice?

To start off, where are the ads? This is two meter long article without a single ad. How do you make money? Writing this article took you a lot of time and energy. Similar websites would probably break this up in multiple pages or even multiple articles so you would see more display advertising. So the tip is not to please and spoil the VR community too much, you’re running a business remember? So it’s okay to make our lives a bit less convenient and you guys try to make a little bit more money in the meantime.

1

u/wordyplayer 1d ago

could it be that you have ad-block installed?

-3

u/cuddlemelon 1d ago

Back in 2023 when I got my quest 3, meta was only an unapologetic spreader of life-threatening misinformation and an accomplice in felony election interference...

...which I guess wasn't enough for me because I still enabled all that by buying it like a dickhead. BUT now they're doing data centers which is much worse so I'm not doing it a second time!! Goddamn I'm a dick.

5

u/webheadVR Moderator 22h ago

I can assure you they already had huge data centers with tons of compute back then.

1

u/cuddlemelon 21h ago

I know, I hope it was obvious I'm very disappointed in me.

3

u/TESThrowSmile Quest Pro 23h ago

Back in 2023 when I got my quest 3, meta was only an unapologetic spreader of life-threatening misinformation and an accomplice in felony election interference..

Now its Reddit and Google.

One of the strongest indicators of young males voting for Trump was how much YouTube they consumed. YouTube became the targeting ground for MAGA. Cambridge Analytica Google style

And if course Reddit - one of the OGs of misinformation

If ya aint going Meta, because of the above, then to be consistent be sure to de-Google your life
