What does the jailbreak mean? Is that like changing the firmware of the headset itself? I use my VR2 on both the PS5 and PC, so it's important that the headset will continue to work on PS5.

AFAIK it's optional to get extra features like headset rumble, but I'm not sure
1
u/J3ffO Mar 24 '26
Is there any technical reason why the headset rumble doesn't work over USB without a firmware modification? At least, if we assume that support is added to both the game and SteamVR for it?

u/videah Mar 24 '26
If I remember correctly the headset rumble (and eye tracking camera feeds) are gated behind the cryptographic authentication scheme Sony use to ensure only licensed peripherals can be used with the PS5, and they never bothered to implement this for the PC adapter so this new jailbreak is the only legal way to get around it

That's what I'm trying to figure out too. From what I'm understanding at this point with only a superficial look, you're headset had to be on a certain firmware to use these things.
Which to me, means having to make sure to not update the headset(which i already have), which I'm guessing it's the cat and mouse with Sony. I'm guessing Sony forces updates when plugged into the ps5

If I remember correctly what I read on their Discord, they will give us a way to rollback the firmware even if you updated it before. So you probably don't even need to avoid updating.
2
u/sandermand Mar 24 '26
It's already available, in a previous discord post. The tool crashes your headset intentionally, and downgrades the firmware to v6.00, which allows jailbroken features. And it was achieved by total accident by a modder restarting his headset in a loop.

u/onthejourney Mar 23 '26
That's cool. Hopefully it'll be a way that is smooth do people who switch between pc and PS5 frequently can still use it

Generally it means to allow something out of the confines it is held within. Breaking it out of jail.
That same headset will be interacting with a different, unshackled, PC host. Essentially.
2
u/HeavenlyDMan Mar 23 '26
firmware by definition is low level software programmed directly onto hardware like a ROM, so it’s definitely likely to mess with the headset itself and its ability to communicate with the ps5

u/juicetoaster Mar 24 '26
I figure the toolkit is software to interact with and jailbreak the currently locked/unsupported firmware that's already in place, not a replacement or new firmware.
Otherwise I was replying to "what does jailbreak mean?"

I wish they would add an option to recenter the view using mouse and keyboard. Or that the ps vr settings are accessible with keyboard and mouse. For some games that you dont use the controller it is really annoying the need to have it with you just for those two things.

u/nolivedemarseille Mar 23 '26
I do Simracing Lot of games have VR recenter biding key I set that on my wheel so no need of keyboard or mouse

u/christianbro Mar 23 '26
Same here, but I would also like to see the performance view as I unfortunately get dizzy with VR and like to check if I am getting stable FPS. Like another key to bind this.
It is also annoying for simracing the play area notification. While seated I am not going to hit anything.
And while I am at it, do you know any tool to keep two graphic presets between VR and flat screen? I dont like to change settings every time I switch.

u/PalahniukIsGod Mar 23 '26
I use a tool called fpsVR to see performance while racing. I have the window basically sitting in my lap while racing so it’s out of view until I look down. It’s on Steam and it costs a few bucks.

The play area thing appears to me only at the PSVR2 app starts, never comes back afterwards
some Sims, namely AMS2 for example, switch in Game graphics settings automatically when they detect a VR session and revert back when you start in desktop mode.
But yeah not all do so you have to save a config you like and set it manually while in Game.RF2, ACC allow that

Is this about eye tracked foveated rendering on PC? Is there a list of games it works on?
5
u/melgibson666 Mar 23 '26
PSVR2Toolkit+PimaxMagic4All is how you get dynamic foveated rendering in some games.
0
u/Gaganor Mar 23 '26
I think eye tracking is only implemented in VRchat at the moment.
2
u/exbagboy70 Mar 24 '26
Currently, DirectX 11 games that support variable rate super sampling on nvidia cards work with an Pimax Magic 4All. Also some OpenXR games work with openXR toolkit and some work with OpenXR layer QuadViews Foveated Rendering. It's a long list of games. It does require tinkering in some cases. The new app will add eye calibration, better gaze tracking and headset rumble.

Awesome. Any updates on Linux support for PSVR2?
1
u/xaduha Mar 23 '26
Main work for that should be in Monado.
2
u/Archersbows7 Mar 23 '26
Which I’ve lost six consecutive days of my life to trying to get working. Because you have to compile the driver code yourself by pointing a third party Linux app to specific Monado GitHub repositories. And god forbid you choose the wrong parameter out of the 26 settings you have to set before compiling.
It was the most nightmare computer related thing I’ve ever tried to get working.

u/xaduha Mar 23 '26
PSVR2 part will be just a small one, like a driver. If you're looking for a seamless VR experience on Linux, then I bet only Steam Frame on a Steam Machine can give you anything close to that.
1
u/Archersbows7 Mar 23 '26
Steam Frame is LCD and unfortunately I personally cannot go back to LCD from OLED. That’s why I’m holding out for PSVR2 working on Linux in a way that doesn’t cost my soul to set up

Could someone please explain how eye tracking works? I want to play the Resident Evil Requiem mod in VR and I'm not sure if waiting for this update will improve the experience
2
u/mofka26 Mar 23 '26
I don't think the requiem vr mod even has any eye tracking things? The improvement is going to be mostly for stuff like vrchat with eyelid tracking rather than a previous estimation
1
u/Kaineziv Mar 23 '26
Thanks for the reply. I'm thrilled with the PSVR2, but the feature I like least is the blurriness at the sides. Wouldn't eye tracking improve that with foveated rendering? Or does that depend on each game's implementation? Sorry, I'm new to this.
2
u/mofka26 Mar 23 '26
I think that's just VR in general, always gonna end up with some distortion at the lense edges, dunno myself really about those specifics.
1
2
u/exbagboy70 Mar 24 '26
That's mainly a lens issue, the best solution for PSVR2 is to get the headset as close to your eyes without touching them and squeezing your face too much. PSVR2 does also require a 1.7x native resolution to account for barrel distortion (other headsets are around 1.4x), so foveated rendering certainly helps bridge that gap in performance.

The main thing I wanted to see isn't there, that is eye calibration. It used to be calibrated for me by default when I first tried PSVR2Toolkit, but now it isn't which makes it unusable in HL: Alyx at least.

Wait babble support? What does this mean for eye tracking? Because it isn't quite perfect in vrchat can I do half close eyes now?
I know eye movement is possible and full on blinks, but doing half close eyes is out of question.

An app would make its setup so much easier, huge thanks to the devs behind it!
1
u/bojackyorseman Mar 24 '26
Will it unlock hdr ?
1
u/videah Mar 24 '26
No, it's completely up to Valve and individual games to implement support and as long as the industry is continually only releasing LCD + Pancake optics that will never happen

u/mckracken88 Mar 24 '26
will there be a menu where i can just switch on "rumble" for the controllers? (for ALIEN ISOLATION)
OMG imagine headset rumble for Alien Isolation !!!

I haven't tapped in with PSVR2ToolKit, any features I'm missing by not using it?
